Help me decide what to do
HarrisonTX replied to HarrisonTX's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Yea, the idea is to take more of the driveability away from the malibu, since i have 2 cars, i dont need to worry about making the malibu a daily driver, i can just keep it for short trips to the store, or a friday night bruiser. Uncle sams paycheck... Yea, that has alot to do with it, im making right at 1,200 a month, which really isnt much, but i go to iraq in about 9 days, so the pay is about doubled over there, plus i dont really have bills, so i will have a little bit of money to pour into the z. v8dats: i cant use flattops, 302's take special pistons, that are all domed, so i will have to mill the dome, to get lower comp. I dont mind spending a little cash on this motor, i just dont know what i should try to get out of it... I could have a sweet roller all forged 302, or i could just make it stock. I kind of want it to be trouble free, and im not sure i can do that with a retro fit roller cam.... -
Decisions decisions desicions. IMO the first step to a project is decieding what your goal is. I have a '79malibu that is a fun little 4 speed street car, with no a/c and no power steering, high comp. loapy cam... the works. Since i have 2 cars, im thinking i should take the driveability away from the malibu, make it more of a weekend streer/strip car, and have the v8z as my daily driver. I cant decide what i want to do with the z I have the makings of a 302, and really am wanting a 302 (chevy) with a built t5. Im not sure how to build this motor, thats where i want some opinions I know i want to keep the a/c system on, and working. I dont know if i want to use all close to stock parts, and just make a fun little 302, or I could sacrifice the low idle, and ad a single plane intake and a rated 2000-whatever RPM cam, and make it rap up like a real 302 should... Maybe. I could spend even more money on these pistons (they cost $300 used) get the dome milled off, build a mild TOUGH motor, and add a procharger. I dont want an insane fast car, just a little giddy up. I kinda want to use the 302 for what its good for, high RPM power Thro out some ideas please guys

Alright, good info, im learning alot. The reason im using those pistons, is because those are the only 302 pistons avalible. 302's came from the factory with 12:1, so they are just stock replacments, and yes, they are forged, so is the crank, and teh rods i plan to buy. a 302 has a 4inch bore, but i cant just stick in 350 pistons, because (i forget the tech. term for it) the distance from the wrist pin, to the top of the piston is differnt. I could maybe get away with running a 13:1 (or about that) 327 piston, which in a 302 would equal to about 9:1, perfect. I know 6-8psi is low. Im not trying to get crazy. I like to build the motors, for more power than i have. For example, i built my malibu motor, and its got forged probe pistons, forged rods, forged crank, and is a 4bolt main, and only making about 350 Horsepower. I planned to sprey it, so i built it right the first time. I want this z to be my daily driver, so i want to keep it tame at 6-8psi. Im not trying to squeeze every little bit of horse power i can out of this procharger. iaconsultants: i plan on making this a tough motor. dsommer: i dont have the option of 8:1 -

Cool, i was your first post. I found this nifty little chart on the procharger site Looks like with 10:1 or so comp, i could get 6psi... Hmm -
Alright, so heres the deal I have 2cars, my '79 malibu, and my z. The Malibu is a pretty deticated street/strip car, with no a/c, heater, power steering, and high idle, due to a rough cam. My going to try and keep the datsun somewhat of a daily driver. I just got my 302 pistons, which have a 11.8:1 comp. ratio. I was going to get it milled down, so i can run some 93 gas. I got to thinking, why not mill it way down and install a Pro Charger. I Dont know much at all about boost, i would run something mild like 6-8psi, to try to get some life out of the motor. Im not gonna lie about it, i will drive the car, and drive it hard every now and then... 1.Whats the difference in intercooled systems, and non intercooled systems, yes i know one has an intercooler, and makes more power, is that just because the air is cooler? 2.If i only want 6-8psi, i can get a small procharger correct? 3.Can i still keep the A/c With the procharger, is there enough room in a z engine bay? I HATE clutter, (thats the reason the malibu has an almost empty engine bay) 4. True or false, the lower the comp. the more effective the procharger 5. Is 10:1 too high for a procharger Any random info will be gooood Thanks guys

unique '91 hybridz makes it into carcraft
HarrisonTX replied to HarrisonTX's topic in Non Tech Board
Crap, is it Hot Rod, i usually dont read hot rod, so i just assumed it was carcraft... Sometimes i forget i have a hot rod sub. that im letting run out. I just posted that because i remember a member askin if it had been done, and mentioned he wanted to do it, and immediatly being pounced on with "What a waste, why dont you just put a 350 in it" kinda crap. I just wanted to show that its been done, and it went damn near 160 miles per hour. Some people here think a 383, or a Ls1 are the only motors on the planet -
why IM NOT a big fan of two post lift designs
HarrisonTX replied to grumpyvette's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
How did he screw that up? I have one in my shop, and i always, triple check the pads on the frame, i square them up, and always but the motor side of the car, facing the correct way. I lift it up a few inches, then shake it a little, to check stability. They wouldnt sell the product if it couldnt function safely. If used properly im sure your fine... I bet the pads wernt right on frame, or where ever.. -
Good info wheelman... Are you sure i cant pull out that VSS electronic speedo and put in a gear? cause i really want to do that, the whole electronic to mechanical version box is one of the reasons i didnt want to do a t56, i got a really cheap mech. autometer mech. speedo. I think i just may have an 89 camaro bellhousing or 2 laying around. I cant wait for over drive, top loader trannies are the cats meow. I shifted my buddies 5.0 mustang, amazing, it sure isnt like my 4 speed They always laugh at me when they put it in 5th when im in the car

With a price tag of $1700 for a TKO, i think im gonna go with a world class. If i brake it, **** happens, ill just drive the malibu till i get it repaired. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/world-class-T-5-Manual-Transmission-Camaro-Firebird-T5_W0QQitemZ8014675338QQcategoryZ33733QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Check that out. So, do either of yall have some detailed links, or pictures about the t5 installation? The JTR book dosnt talk too much about it. And the company Mcleod At http://www.mcleodind.com/ Offers Blowproofs for about $199, Altho on the site they are all $300+ I know a shop that has them at $200. MY problem is which one to buy, and i know nothing about hyd. linkage, i have only used mechanical. Any links or help there?
-
Wow Braap, and mikelly, awesome info guys, that really helps So, Maybe yall can school me on the t-5's Non world class = weakest t5 World Class = a litte tougher TKO = toughest? Is that about how it works? Ive decieded to go against g-force, i have heard so much crap about them lately... I checked at D&D, they dont have prices, about how much will a a tko run?

Bog city, if thats the case, then ill slam it in 3rd, if i get into a sticky situation, it takes about half of a second to down shift... Too much gear? I have a 3.42 first gear with a 3.42 rear gear in my Malibu, i think you would descride that as a "Tractor" i love it, i do have to shift at about 10mph, but holy **** do i get there fast. You talk about the car hookin up, and you mention that the lower rpms dont make power, well, thats good i think. I dont want power starting at 1,000 RPM, i want to power to kick in, once the car is moving, and traction is, somewhat established. Otherwise i would boil the tires (which im still probably going to do) If the power ban starts at 2,500, thats great. that low first in a t.56 will help out in that case.

Well, Its gonna be nothing special. Bowtie vortec heads, midrange XE, or VooDoo cam Performer or so equal intake, smaller holley Less than 400 horsepower. Nothing too big I dont want to hear, Ah, you wont break a t5 with 400hp, i dont wanna risk it....

I had some guy at auto zone tell me this.. I was gettin plugs for the girls '97 s-10, and auto zone "recommended" bosch platinum 4's, they were $6 a piece, and they guy said, Well, if you want optimum performance, this is the only way to go, The truck wont run right it you get the champs.. I got the champs.. I never got to try them because i COULD not get the wire off the number 1 plug, never had anything stuck like that before..

Alright, i cant stop flip flopping! I have just about everything figured out for my z, aside from the tranny. First i wanted the t56, they idea of 80mph at somewhere around 2000 RPM is awesome to me, but its so expensive... or is it. My original plan was a t-56 with the weir bellhousing... But then, I talked to some people who suggested.. Get a t5, run it till i blow it up, take it out ( im a pro at tranny pullin, so it wouldnt bug me much) send it g-force, spend $1000 and get a bullet proof t5, and save the 100 lbs the t56 would cost me, and still probably not spend as much as a t-56 But, then i talked to some anti- g-force people, who said they sent off their t-5, and ended up with a $2000 bill after labor, and bs. So now the t56 isnt sounding all that bad What do yall think?

A group buy would be cool, how much was he asking.. It would be kinda nifty to morph a datsun logo, with a chevy bowtie, like a hybrid. The blue bar could easly be made into a bowtie someone get to work on that, i think im on to something.
-
So im saving quite a few topics that will come in handy when i do my swap in 14 monthes... Is there any useful information that the JTR book left out, that would be good to save? Does anyone have any good saved exhaust threads? The search brigns back a ton, but its hard to specify what i need... Specifically, a good system that wont hang too low, or be restrictive..
-
This guy used the search technique, instead of making a new post... Cool roto
