Why? If he gets his price then the value of all of our HybridZs increase by a little bit. I hope it sells for $60K!

In the past the sniffers were pretty visible. If I recall correctly they were a 6 to 8" diameter white tube about 18" long mounted perpendicular to the road and about a foot off the ground and about a foot from the curb. There was a white van parked close to the sensor and a bunch of wires running out to the sensor itself. It got your attention when going up the on ramp. I think a well tossed water balloon could take the thing out...

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A POLITICAL DISCUSSION! Read the start of my post. Oh, never mind.

OK, I'm going to try and start an unemotional, factual, logical, economic discussion of oil prices and their affect on our economy. I expect to have to delete this thread at some point, but I hope not. My contention is that even at $60+ per barrel, oil prices are having a very small affect on our economy. http://www.rgemonitor.com/blog/setser/94582 The above link is in contradiction to the author's earlier prediction in August 2004 regarding oil price shocks and their affect on the US economy: http://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~nroubini/papers/OilShockRoubiniSetser.pdf And we are still about $10 per barrel below when oil prices were at their highest in inflations adjusted dollars (1979 through 1981) when Carter imposed oil price controls on US wellhead oil: http://www.wtrg.com/prices.htm

Just run the exhaust out the front like a lot of the FWD drag cars. Or build a cutout that routes the exhaust into the cabin. Then, when you see one of the testing stations on the side of the on ramp, roll up the windows, take a deep breath, hit the cutout, and then once you're by and are hopefully still concious, close the cutout and roll down the windows.

Rack and Pinion - tie rod ends
johnc replied to mom'sZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
OEM Nissan LH thread tie rod ends have a splotch of yellow paint near the threaded end. -
Nissan 720 4x4 pickup (early 1980s) front diff: R180 4.11 and 4.38 no LSD. Datsun/Nissan 810/Maxima late 1970s and early 1980s: R180 3.70 and 3.90 no LSD. Nissan Motorsports: R190 any ratio and four pinion clutch LSD. Nissan 240Z 432R: R190 3.90 with two pinion clutch LSD.

240Z wheels are lug centric and rely on the lug studs and nuts to properly center the wheel on the hub. If the holes in the wheel are ovaled there's no way of knowing if the centering is correct. You might not have problems for days, months, or years but one day you might have a wheel center or a lug stub break. There's no way of knowing without checking the wheel or the studs for fatigue cracks. Its your ***.

.250" think steel for engine mounts? How big is your engine? Guys, there isn't ANYTHING on the car that would need 1/4" steel plate. Design a mount using a box shape (look at the stock mounts on the 240Z crossmember) and .095" wall 1020 would be fine. If you went with 4130 CroMo you can make the mounts out of .083". If you're building an engine plate, use 6061T651 aluminum in .250" thickness and drill a bunch of lightening holes. We aren't modifying a Peterbuilt truck!

Some of the things I learned helping to run a software company that grew to about 100 employees: 1. The only thing you have to sell is your reputation. 2. Selling your reputation is something only you can do. 3. Figure a minimum of 80 hours of selling effort for each client you get. 4. Figure 10 minutes of administrative time for every billable hour. 5. You're doing real good if you get 30 hours billable time out of each employee each week (averaged over a year). 6. Contracts, project plans, requirements documents, etc. are only as good as the people who sign them. All of them can be challenged and can end up useless if they go before a mediator, a judge, or a jury. 7. The client is always right in their own mind. The only way you can change that is to get them to change their mind. Logic and a preponderance of evidence won't achieve that because "mind changing" is an emotional process. 8. Be on time and do what you say you're gonna do even if it costs you a bundle. 9. The first thing you and your partner should agree on is an exit strategy. How wil the LLC be disolved if: 1) one of you dies, 2) one of you gets thrown in jail, 3) an ex-spouse sues and wins membership in the LLC, 4) one of you gets really pissed off at the other, 5) forced disolution from creditors or the law, 6) one of you wants to retire, 7) one of you gets a better job offer. 10. Take this very seriously and treat the LLC as a completely separate entity. No mingling of personal funds, assets, home and business locations, etc. Get up in the morning when you're not billing and "go to the offifce."

Congratulations and you can use the, "I really had to pee!" as your duress arguement in the divorce...

That's just it, he won't work on anything newer then about 1972 and it really must be a GM product. He will work on a Ford or a Chrysler car but he'll bitch about it the whole time.

There's a pretty serious clearance issue with the ST rear mounted rear anti-roll bar and a 280ZXT CV shaft install. I spent some time today trying to figure out how to make it work without binding and interference, but I don't think it can be done using the stock anti-roll bar mount on the LCA. But, I think I've figured out a way to make it work by making a new mount on the LCA and modifying the anti-roll bar ends. Might even be able to do it without removing the LCAs from the car. Stay tuned...

I see thet a lot even in my little industrial complex. There are two shops that specialize in Hot Rods and vintage american cars. One, Vintage Motors (http://www.vintageride.net) is run by Bob McKean who is a 20 years ASE Master Mechanic and worked in Nissan and Infinity dealerships for 17 years. As you can guess, he likes the import stuff and is always wanting to see what I'm doing to yet another 240Z, BMW, Porsche. He also knows his **** and saves me from doing very stupid things every now and then. The other shop (who shall remain nameless) owner comes by every now and then and asks me how I could possible be working on "Jap Crap" or these overpriced German POSs. He's proud to brag that he doesn't own a single metric tool! He even dragged me over to his shop to show me a Mustang 2 front suspension he put under a 1967 Mustang and he was convinced that it made the car a better handler then the BMW M3 that I was putting a front coil over kit on. "Struts are crap and can't handle." It takes all kinds.

Well, maybe it is an R200 diff. Measure the ring gear bolt centers and post the number here. I'll measure and R180 and let you know.

Now we're devolving into the Political and I guess my 9th Circuit comment started it. Danger Will Robinson, Danger! -
No, a properly brazed part can be every bit as strong as a welded part.
-
Just your basic R180 welded diff. Actually, its not a diff anymore, its a spool and its not welded, its brazed.

If its a solid rotor, venting air to one side of it will cause the rotor to warp into a conical shape (but that really only applies to race track usage.) To keep that from happening you need to build a can that routes air to both sides of the solid rotor. If its a vented rotor, then ducting air to th einside center of the rotor helps to get more air out through the vents.

280ZX Rear Suspension - fixes??
johnc replied to ecp48's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Why? Unless you're an expert road racer its not going to get you around a race track any quicker and unless you can cut a consistent fast light its not going to improve your 1/4 mile times. Remember, a lot of the discussion here delves into technical minutia (I call it Engnineering Masturbation and I'm one of the prime practitioners) that doesn't really matter much out in the real world once someone puts their hands on the wheel. The 280ZX can be a fast car around a race track even with its supposedly "inferior" semi-trailing arm rear suspension. http://www.a2zracer.com/page82.html But, then again, this is HybridZ. If its something you want to do, go for it! -
Well... the rims in the picture were (are) custom built Monocoques and when you specify backspace to them (or Kodiak for my other sets of custom wheels) backspace is actually measured to the tire bead mounting surface. Backspace is not measured to the wheel lip when ordering custom wheels.

Article: "California Crackdown on Modified Vehicles"
johnc replied to Zhadman's topic in Non Tech Board
What its going to take to stop this is a citizen doing the following: 1. If there is no "normal" probably cause or reason for the stop other then suspicion of modification, the citizen must refuse consent to search. 2. If the officers say they are going to search anyway, request that a supervisor be present before the search begins. 3. Takes notes if possible of everything said, who was present, etc. 4. Once a ticket is issued, hire two lawyers - one to fight the ticket and a second for a civil suit alleging illegal search. 5. Start writing lots of checks and be willing to push this to the California Supreme Court and on the the 9th Circuit. If its gets to the 9th Circuit, you'll win for sure. Until someone is willing to do that or gets SEMA behind them, this kind of stuff will continue. -
Based on the reviews on Tire Rack I would try the BFGoodrich gForce Sport in 225/50-15. $81.
