  1. Mike, thanks!!! Sorry to hear about the power woes, though; hopefully it'll all get sorted out inexpensively. Davy
  2. I think they are rated for about 300 lb/ft of torque if I remember correctly. Rick Marcus (Fast Frog) has used one on his supercharged V8Z without a problem, but he didn't make drag launches on sticky tires a habit either. I have one I bought for my V8 conversion and I'm sure it will live even with a few drag strip launches, so I'm not worried. They can be modified, but if you are ever going for some really big horsepower, I'd go with a different tranny. Just my $.02. Davy
  3. Before you try a swap, make sure you find out what the SMOG LAWS are in your area. You do not want to put major $$$$ into a ride that will get impounded because of a failed smog check.... Seeing that you are from Ohio, rust is the BIGGEST obstacle for you. Davy
  4. Those chains stretched after only minutes?!? Keeraaap That really bites. I'm hoping my timing chain does not do that, but it probably will from what you are describing, Pete. Hrm. Now I'm really thinking about the 'quiet' Pete jackson gear drive (dual idler). I'll be using it on my other engine I am gathering parts for. I figure it won't hurt a thing since Gump has used his for years. I suppose I won't worry about it then--I was thinking that the gear drive would somehow hurt the valvetrain through vibrations, but I guess that's not the case. Lone and I did discuss them a bit as he alluded to, and we may just incorporate one into block of a forced induction engine. Hmmm. Davy
  5. Those three leggers are just plain dangerous. I banished mine to the backyard after considering what would happen if one of my kinds hung onto the header....That just did it for me. I went out and bought the four legger from Harbor Freight lat year--it works just fine and gives me some great piece of mind. It does not fold (biggest drawback), but I'll disassemble it anyway when not using it. Glad you pointed that out Grumpy. Davy
  6. Mike (zfan), If you are parting out your old Victor manifold, I'm interested. This is a shameless post, sorry Email me, Dude. Davy
  7. Is anyone in the forum running a gear drive? I'd like to hear from you what your experiences are and if you think they are really the cat's meow. For my topic question, I suppose the answer is: "It depends." This makes sence since I'm going to be running a relatively 'mild' V8 (about 300-350 hp) primarily on the street. From what I gather, guys run them because they make noise, which gets you noticed... I know they don't stretch like a chain can, but they can also transmit unwanted vibrations to the valve train. Will this really shorten the life of the valve train or what? I'm a little on the fence regarding these things as to wether the cost benefit is really worth it all. BTW, I know they come in 'noisy' and 'quiet' versions--I'm into quiet myself, so that would be the way I would go. This leaves me the only reason for getting one: If the performance benefits are worth it for street and occassional track use. I'd like input from guys in the know, and guys who think they know Davy
  8. Get a 3" or 3.5" exhaust made for your car. If you would rather have mandel bends, you'll have to buy the tubing and then have a good 'custom' exhaust shop fab it for you. You'll want to use a resonator or middle muffler to cut down on the droning noises made by a larger, higher flowing system. The small bullet shaped mufflers by Borla and others come to mind, and you can also use a larger free flowing muffler for the rear like a Dynomax Super Turbo. Use the search function for more ideas--custom exhausts apply to every car anyway, so the info is pertinent. Davy
  9. Now that's a GREAT idea!!! Heh heh, who would have thunk. I'll buy the butter flavored kind to make it even more enjoyable! (I just hope the wofe doesn't find it 'missing' for a while when I need it). Davy
  10. Wow, that Z rocks! I would not have painted the car yellow--I liked the red much better! Sorry, I just had to do that. Seriously though, the car looks great in that red--is it a VW color?? I think they had a color called something like "Chili Pepper Red" or close to it. Very good looking car with those wheels. Davy
  11. www.modern-motorsports.com Ross Corrigan has all kinds of brake upgrades AND he owns a very sweet 280ZX with a V8!!! Make sure you email him. Davy
  12. Should be fine to handle it. The little bit of extra weight is rather negligible and the upgrades should do wonders for the handling. Good luck with your project. Davy
  13. Yup, the guy CAN weld! Lordy, those are some beautiful welds. Davy
  14. Looks really great! From the look of it, he used thin guage metal (which is good) to keep the weight down. Now just a little bit of polish or paint and it'll rock! Davy
  15. Yep, you did in fact steal the car. That is a very NICE looking V8Z to say the least. The adrenaline rush should take a few years off your person....or add them depending on how you deal with it!!! Davy
  16. Terry, I'm not sure if you were referring to a very old post I put up about the RX7 rack? I bought a 3rd Gen RX7 rack from the JY and it is exactly the same as the Z rack (fits in the same way with the same mounts) BUT it is about 2 inches longer on the right side. I have not yet mounted this in a car, but I'm sure it will work. The only issue is to find out what bad things arise from having a shorter end link on one side when the road gets rough. Hope this helps. Davy
  17. You should buy a JTR manual ASAP. That will give you the general idea of what is involved and what to look for. The search function on this site is an excellent tool to look up specific answers to your specific questions. Good luck on the swap--the 280Z will make an excellent V8 car that you will love. Davy
  18. It's a weekday, so who cares about the neighbors?!? Hahaha, way to go! Davy
  19. When I had my 260Z I would open it EVERY single time I got into the driver's seat. With the V8 it'll be even more insane. I plan on running in some drivers schools as well with the car since I'll need to re-educate myself on 'control.' BTW, for those who want to know, I drive very sanely most of the time, especially in town. Just ask Jon or Auxilary--they'll tell you I'm like grandpa behind the wheel most of the time lol Davy
  20. Jon, I'm curious to know what the problem was--please let us know since the car I'll be buying here shortly has the same MSD 6AL. Davy
  21. Kewl! Keep us posted, man! Davy
  22. Ditto. If I can save a few bucks doing it this way over the Painless system, great. I think the major appeal to Painless is the fact that they have all the wires individually marked, thus showing what wire goes where. The convenience of that (and the piece of mind) is what sells the product. If something very similar can be achieved more cheaply thru Waytek, fine. All in all, I think if you have a diagram or similar visual plan for rewiring the car, I think it will be easier NOT to get over one's head in doing this. For that is the greatest fear of rewiring that I have. The added expense of having to get someone else to finish it is not what I want. Davy
  23. Hard work is usually worth the effort, especially when you have good help! Nice to see it's coming along well, Mike! Davy
