'75 280Z LQ9 T56, Built to Break
_Donovan_ replied to _Donovan_'s topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Good point, never thought of that. -
A few years ago I tried an LT1/4L60E project into a '76 280Z. Just as I finished I moved out to California and the car could not come. I eventually sold it off to a friend of mine. I learned a lot from that one though and have had the itch since, especially since it was running. Last year about this time I found a beautiful '75 280Z and grabbed it. I knew i would be putting an LS engine in it but wanted to drive it a bit before doing that. It has been sitting for quite a few years so I tried to freshen up the car some and drive until I gathered up all the parts fro the conversion. After getting into it I found that the engine was shot. So I just pulled it out and she has sat since then. Well now is the time for that swap. A few days ago Shawn at LSX4U.com hooked me up with a 2003 LQ9. I bought a complete swap LS T56 from ebay, and just ordered the full kit from JCI. By the end of the month I should have all those pieces delivered and will be working as fast as I can to get this project moving. I am sort of working against the clock again since I will be moving back to Cali fairly soon as well and would like it finished before then. The sbc install from JTR was pretty simple and straight forward, I do not have the book from them for this one yet but am hoping it will be equally seamless. But I do have some questions from everyone if you don't mind answering. I am getting the stand alone LQ9 package from LSX4U which I am sure is easy since the prep the wiring harness, and I also will recieve the trans from this link below. I believe I will be using SpeedHut and Autometer guages. http://www.ebay.com/itm/98-02-Camaro-Firebird-LS1-Tremec-T56-6-Speed-Manual-Conversion-Kit-Complete-Used-/311353292799?ssPageName=ADME:L:PMR:US:1123 One big question I have is that I chose to go fly by wire on this install. I know that it is more work but from what I understand of LS type engines it is preferred. Maybe not preferred from people using and installing them but for intricate ECU things. Now I am really wondering if it is really worth it to go that route or just go the easy cable route? Also my question from anyone that went JCI, is there a little trick here or there I should know or maybe is there anything glaring at you that I am forgetting to get? I will be keeping this thread updated with pics and parts bought. Thanks everyone.

There is a guy selling Arizona Z cars parts on the classifieds. May want to check that out. -

How about this? How much money do you plan on throwing at this? -

I am no expert, but I would not touch that car. Sorry to say but I wouldn't trust V8 power in that. As much fun as these are I would think about personal safety. Think about cost to bring her back to life vs finding a donor car that would not need that much work as well. -
You could stop by me, Holyoke MA 01040, and take a look at my project. '75 280Z no rust. Engine and interior pulled and ready for whatever swap you want. Moving to Cali soon so would be willing to let go instead of ship.

I have one with engine pulled and prepped for a swap. Could easily swap in what you want if you want to wait. Only a few hours from you as well. -

Doesn't sound too odd actually. Also I am sure since it is Firestone that they gave you a long list of "problems" they have found. -
Chrome, all day.

Well, I guess I will jump on this. Honestly you need to pick up a manual from Johns cars, JTR, whatever and read through. I am on my second build now and reading through everything for the 100th time. First was a '76 with LT1/4L60E and this will be a LS/T56. The first time I just put in the engine and trans and then ended up pulling it out 50 more times. Long story short I had to make sure the whole car could handle all this extra power. And while I was in there I thought it was better to just fix everything then. This time I am starting by doing everything on the car first. The engine and trans will be the last things I do. Installing the Arizona Z Car suspension and brakes first, then interior, paint, rear end, all that before I even start looking for an engine and trans. I reccomend you do something similar. Fix the whole car to where it should be for that type of HP. Here is a good link to give you an idea what you are getting into. http://www.4moores.com/280z/files/JCI%20Install%20Update%202.pdf Good luck but my guess is everyone will say to start somewhere similar, with reading, reading, READING. Good Luck and just wondering what you paid for that?

Battery wired up backwards
_Donovan_ replied to _Donovan_'s topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
It turned out to be the shunt. -
Battery wired up backwards
_Donovan_ replied to _Donovan_'s topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
would it be possible to burn out my shunt by doing this? I am trying to follow the wiring diagram and diagnose where I am losing current. Right now I am at the shunt as the cause. -
Just unplug and see what doesn't work.

Battery wired up backwards
_Donovan_ replied to _Donovan_'s topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Fusable Link was blown. Changed them all and will be ordering a MaxiFuse set up for this. But now suddenly everything went dead. Was cranking but now nothing. Acts as if there is no battery in the car. Getting the meter out tomorrow to see what is up now. -
Battery wired up backwards

WOW, rushing again at work. It is a 75 Datsun 280Z. -
Hello everyone. I will make this quick. We were working on the car and replaced the battery. The leads were put on backwards (Neg on Pos) and was let to sit like that for a considerable amount of time. The battery was not that strong to begin with but I am wondering what may have been affected. The car is now cranking but not starting. Spark at the plugs, fuel pressure, and air flow but no start. Anyone do this before and realized what was affected? Thanks in advance.
