mattausten23
hey everyone! I just checked out my first 73 240z today that has a turbo 1983 engine with a 5 speed. WHen i was driving the car i had it in first gear and the it was really short...only went to about 3000 rpm and the same happend in 2nd gear...rest of the gears were fine...The owner claims that the tranny is very close ratio. But wouldnt it still rev high? Please let me know..if its the tranny I'm going to buy the car! Thanks
BluDestiny
It should rev all the way.
NewZed
What happens at 3,000 RPM that stops it from revving higher?
aplyedmind
I'm guessing TPS or AFM.
mattausten23
The owner is claiming that 1st and 2nd only rev to 3k and 4k RPMs because the transmission is a close ratio. I've never worked with a close ratio transmission but shouldn't it still rev higher?
Neverdone
The transmission has nothing to do with the engine being able to rev. If he's telling you it does, then he's either an idiot, or he's trying to hide something. Either way I wouldn't want to deal with him. Miles
Look at some other Z cars before you decide on this one.

JSM
What happens at 3,000 RPM that stops it from revving higher? So what was the answer to this question???
mattausten23
It sounds like a really high rev at 3000rpm and doesnt go anywhere really. 2nd gear is pretty much the same, but the rest of the gears seem fine but a little rough.

Tony D
That explanation made it clear as mud. You mean to say 'acceleration tapered off'? Like the rpms DID physically go higher, but the engine didn't pull as hard as it did at the lower rpms? This is a CRITICAL distinction to make. How fast in MPH were you going when you upshifted from 1st and 2nd?
