BluDestiny
Why do they just use gears to drive the cams? any insight on that?
texis30O
That thing should go for the price of a kidney......and a testical
19762802+2
Why do they just use gears to drive the cams? any insight on that? lasts longer then a belt or chain I believe plus gear driven cars have a unique sound. might even rev better? I'm not sure hoping someone else will chime in.
josh817
Just pulling this out of my ass but I feel like it's something along the lines of "rock solid valve timing"; not having to worry about chain/belt snapping or stretching. Then again, many other applications use them just fine. It was worth a shot!
Gollum
Go and look through all the DOHC L series threads, timing chain arrangement is always the #1 concern. Even with 1 fast Z's build, he states that the cutting up of the heads and putting them together was relatively simple, when compared to the timing chain setup. This gear arrangement is a fairly straight forward design, and keeps you from having to mess around with tensioner angles. It might look pretty and expensive, which it probably is, but it's also a "simple" answer to a complex problem. This is a great answer if you wanted to keep as many of the front end parts as possible stock. It's definitely not as much of a "shade tree engineer's" answer to this problem as it requires precision machining and knowing your tolerances exactly. Motorcycles use gear driven setups almost as a standard. You can also find gear setups for most american V8's on summit, jegs, and other part supplier's websites. My concern with them is wear. What will those gears look like in 100k? And what will that wear do to camshaft/valve performance? The beauty and danger of belt driven cams is that as the belt wears you can't perceive any power loss, just change it when scheduled and you're good. But overhauling a gear setup like that could be very labor and wallet intensive...
PMC raceengines
because the cams have to spin at half crank speed, the cam gears would need to be the same size as nomal L28 with a chane.so to make them smaller you need a idler gear and 2 chanes and this makes for slack chanes and bad timing for the cams not so good for high rpm . So with the gear drive you can make the cam gears smaller and make the hole lot fit under the cover and have very stable cam timing at high rpm ... well thats why the LZ was gear drive i gess OS built there setup like this for the same reasion. And the 10000 rpm they spin it to Edited February 28, 2012 by PMC raceengines
HS30-H
Original OSG TC21-B1 was chain driven. The TC21-B1Z is the new straight cut gear driven version.
Kali
New info on the New TC24-B1Z http://speedhunters.com/archive/2012/02/28/event-gt-gt-nostalgic-2-days-pt-2.aspx It was then on to the OS Giken booth...and this is where you will have to bear with me as I have to nerd out big time now. What you see here is a complete L28-based engine that OS Giken will be offering from sometime this year. Based on the old TC24-B1 motor, now renamed TC24-B1Z, it uses an L28 block bored out to 89 mm and a lengthened 86 mm stroke thanks to the fully counter balanced forged crank and H-section connecting rods which boost capacity to 3,208 cc. Up top is a completely revised TC24 twin cam 24-valve head. Other cool details include a cam gear timing conversion, which eliminates the L28's chain drive. In fact OS Giken was working on a similar limited edition gear conversion for the Nissan S20 engine a few years back when I dropped by their factory. If you recall I posted a few pictures of it here, as you can see there are no chains to be seen! This conversion eliminates the slack chain-based timing systems have, not to mention the potential for failure which becomes very important if you consider that this L28 engine here revs to 10,000 rpm, 1,000 rpm up from the old engine which was built in 1980. Compression ratio is up from 11:1 to 11.5:1. This display unit was running big Weber carbs with carbon fiber funnels, but sports injection can also be offered. And on to the numbers, this monster kicks out, 420HP at 9,000 rpm and 289 lb/ft of torque at 8,000 rpm. Fit this to an S30, Hakosuka or a KenMary and you have yourself nothing short of JDM vintage perfection! They have better pics and far more info. But you heard it first from Kali on HybridZ.org Edited February 28, 2012 by Kali

If they can R&D a sound box type exhaust-(think Ferrari)....my knees' would weaken once that screamed by,lol.
rossman
I bet that thing makes some neat noises! No doubt. Those spur gears will put out some serious whining noise. I bet it sounds sweet!

Tony D
"Working on an S20 version"? It was installed on the white and red box skyline one row over! My favourite was the test ride in the Rocky Auto 1UZ-Powered Box Skyline! But that wasn't on the weekend... It was Wednesday after the show at their shop. Whatcha know... Rocky Auto is a short drive from one of my customers!!! I wouldn't worry about longevity on gear drives for Camshafts... It's FAR less than chain stretch in the same time period. I checked the backlash on their setup and it's TIGHT at room temperature. Far more accurate than ANY chain! I'd look forward to the adaptation to the stock L-Gata SOHC configuration! The Z build has considerable changes from the original 80's version. Talking with the booth guys, the oldest one there said the name IMMEDIATELY of the owner of the car in Okinawa that I'd ridden along with back in 85/86. They know where their stuff is, throwing doubt on the claims OS someone who claimed in the 90's to have gotten one of their heads for testing and porting... Still a whizz-bang lookit me accessory IMO, but a MUCH IMPROVED whizz-bang lookit me accessory. I had no Internet till now, so no post from me. I'll have to try to get the videos of the cars doing their parade laps, good sounds! I spent a butt oaf of money on archival material at the show... I completely forgot about it, until a frenzied e-mail exchange had me on too many planes, trains, and automobiles Friday evening for a meeting in Hiroshima... I arrive at NRT early Saturday morning and I'm greeted by Okamura-San with "Tony San, thank you for coming...Nostalgia Two Days this weekend -- you go?" Damn those required entertainment expenses! :^P

Tony D
Some are the old head, most of the new setup... see attachments... I figure there will be mad downloading. I'm tired, milked-udder tired and it's time for me to go sleepy. I won't upload the closeup geek crap, these attached photos should be good enough for most people. At the entrance, go to the right conference hall or you were in Anime Convention with a million girls dressed like Hentai, or an Ikebana Convention with withered old ladies who's faces looked like withered sweet potatoes! Satisfied to find the booth... Happy to be this close! And the S-20 Version:
