Tim240z
Roadside testing...not only for emissions, but safety equipment and CA Vehicle Code violations too!! This completely F'ing sucks!!! F'in California! http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d02/vc2814.htm http://www.ljworld.com/section/environment/story/149910 There was also a news segment on it this evening on NBC Channel 4 News. auxilary
oh gee, my rotary is going to run 10:1 air/fuel ratio with raw gas dripping out of the exhaust. too bad it's a 73 and not subject to smog check on a side note, this state sucks. the original DMV equipment check law is from 1976
Tim240z
Alex, This will subject ANY car from 1966 on to the roadside test. A gross polluter will be a gross polluter regardless of the year. Plus, if you don't have your conversion 'Certified' you will automatically be screwed. Also, If the car has no bumpers, marker lights, or if the windows are too darkly tinted, etc ,etc....screwed.... Better brush up on your knowledge of the CA Vehicle Code fellas!!

Heavy Z
Officials in California and Colorado have tested the sensors before, but Atwood said he believed the planned rollout in parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties would be the most widespread use in the nation. No firm start date has been set, but the board's vote called for the sensors to be in place by a 2010 federal deadline. Bah, that's 6 years away...unless our budget crisis expedites the process. Thanks for the cautionary info, Tim.
akeizm
In australia they want you to take a road worthy test everytime you reregister your car. Now what a load of CRAP! Yes it will remove some cars off the road, but I reckon alot of people (with modded cars) will be stuffed.
BillZ260
Come on over to OK! Couple of years ago we got rid of all state inspections. Sure, there are alot of cars that drive around stinking up the roads, but you could be one of them! YEHAW

Owen
I KNEW it, and all that talk about the state not having enough budget...well, effective immediately or not, I doubt it'll be widespread. Hey Tim I still have that other 3" dia high flow catalytic (I know it's here somewhere) if ya need it As to the photo-ing of cars with high emissions...how about this? It was mentioned here before... http://www.phantomplate.com/photoblocker.html http://beta.kpix.com/news/local/2003/09/12/Will_a_Spray_Can_Help_You_Avoid_Traffic_Tickets%3F.html Owen
johnc
I think we should all run over the sensors that we see setup on the freeway. Say you were distracted, apologize, and have your insurance company pay for it. It will take months for the insurance settlement and by then, if we all do our part, the state may run out of the sensor units.

Sumo
Or if you have money you can buy a retract a plate like the hot rodders do. http://www.tperformance.com/street_rod_store/lighting/retract-a-plate/ or scroll down to the 8th product. http://www.donshotrods.com/parts/univkits.html By the way we have the remote sensing equiptment up here too. The first time i saw it was on an entrance ramp going south on 35 in Lewisville. So now if your in the DFW area and you see a white van with equiptment set up at the entry ramp, THAT'S remote sensing equiptment. And while i agree that something should be done with red light runners, i dont condone red light cameras due to the fact that the company contracted to monitor the equiptment get a percentage of the "take" and any time you use money as an incentive, it becomes an issue of money and not safety. By the way red light cameras can now be used in North Texas anyway, because it got thru by some obscure language about it being a safety monitor and it is up to each city to put up the cameras or not. Garland beware you have some.
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I'm not too worried about it. I dunno about you guys, but I keep my stuff running good. My truck would probably pass smog if it had to be tested. Basically these roadside things have been in place to catch the obvious cars like the 1974 Cadillac hoopty running at 3MPG and dumping enough crap out the exhaust to fuel 3 other cars. As a side note, if your car wont pass smog, that just means that there is more power to be gained by tuning your engine.

grumpyvette
vote the jerks pushing that liberal agenda out of office on the state and national levels, its just that simple, if you let them they will force everyone to run electic hybrid cars let them know your very pissed off about thier screwing with your cars! let them know constantly why youll continue to vote against them, organize letter writing and phone call campains, the only thing government lackys fear is being thrown from cushy jobs and not having a way to run your life! fire the S.O.B.s and rplace them with guys that appreciate your views BUSH WON and GORE lost by only several hundred votes, that comes down to just a few hundred guys that felt that the GORE way of government was the WRONG way to go about things, GORE was constantly against hunting and performance cars, the numbers say the equivalent of the members of single corvette,or hunting club could and did make the differance
johnc
vote the jerks pushing that liberal agenda out of office on the state and national l Its pretty tough to do that here in CA. It took a complete out-of-touch idiot like Davis to get a moderate Republican into office. CA is a really big state and the conservative rural areas are hugely out numbered by the more liberal urban counties. If you look at voting patterns by counties, the vast majority of then (something like 85% of the counties) vote conservative, but because of the huge population concentrations in a couple bay area and SoCal counties, CA votes nationaly as a liberal state. The trend is towards more moderate or conservative, but its a slow trend and may not sustain.
JMortensen
Grumpy, did you ever hear about Gore's book? I never read it myself, but I understood that he outlined a plan to completely irradicate the internal combustion engine. The democrats' agenda is not all about gun control and abortion rights. As hybrid Z drivers we all have at least one reason not to vote left. Weigh that reason against all the others to determine your vote as appropriate of course... Personally I want to see how Kerry tries to spin his strong support for a failed proposal for a $.50 tax hike on gas now that gas prices are such a big issue. This was a few years back, but CA gas might be hitting $3 per gal now if that had gone thru. And who would that tax hurt? Certainly not the rich people he so badly wants to overtax (guilty conscience maybe???). Jon
JMortensen
One more thing, the SCAQMD had a "pull you over and check your emissions" plan about 10 years ago in the greater LA area. They had a roadside infra red (?) emissions tester that hung out on the 23 freeway near LA Ave for a while in Moorpark. I had a friend who worked right there and had a 510 with Mikunis on it, and he told me all about it at the time. He never got pulled over though. He said he would get up to speed and then throw it in neutral and idle past the sensor at 65 mph... Jon
Tim240z
I'm not all that worried about the emissions, but the other stuff too: Bumpers, glass, lights etc....
