Guest HolyLlama
Scottie's post got me discussing sleepers with some buddies today and we had some wild ideas like a 454 in a Yugo or a Ford Festiva, but one of my buddies joked "a ricey Civic with as much money put in the engine as in the body kit and paint job". We laughed about it, but I got to thinking later on today, given the prevelance of cars with body kits, huge wings and huge exhaust tips and nothing under the hood, these cars have become the laughingstock of the performance crowd. Mustang Cobras and V8 S10s terrorize these kinda cars at the local mall. I would estimate that they win more than 99% of the time. Since nobody expects these ricey cars to perform, might they be the ultimate sleeper?
Guest butlersZ
well how about a chevy astrovan with a 327 SBC, say 12 or 13 sec 1/4 mile times. I found a 12.5 sec. astro awhile back on the internet, there was a video but I can't remember where it was located. Or how about small blocking a Volvo??? Guest Aaron
That 11 second F350 4x4 diesel was pretty close to the ultimate sleeper for me.
Sparky
If I was seriously thinking about building an ultimate sleeper... my first choice would be an old volvo...but then again, a surprising amount of people know that you can stuff small blocks in them. number two would be an old jag coupe, like a 73 XJ with a Boosted LS1 under the hood. third would be a suzuki sprint with a RWD/Mid engine conversion, or the J-spec/Oz sprint GTi4 AWD conversion. leave it looking completey stock on the outside, and then build the motor for some carzy HP levels. johnc
Ice cream truck with a blown Donovan Hemi. Saw one a few years ago complete with working freezers and stocked with snow cones, bomb pops, etc.
2many280s
There is a bone stock looking turbo fiesta or festiva(can't remember wich is wich) down the road from my house. You'd never know until he starts it up. Its loud as hell and backfires real bad right now but I've seen him hauling ass up and down the street and its damn quick to be that ugly =)
Guest RCNSC
The coolest sleeper Ive seen was an old Sentra (92 or something) with an SR20DET. It was for sale on ebay for 5K, and looked all stock. As far as bang for the buck thats my favorite sleeper. And no - fast Hondas only make things worse. It gives rice boys hope and someone to idolize. Trust me, having a 400HP civic running around sucks - Guy at my school has one and everyone hangs off his nuts because daddys money makes it go fast. Poundz9oh9
Well, I've thought about this too and I came up with the idea of another engine swap. LS1 in a 96 Cavalier I thought about this while working on my wifes car one day (96 Cavy of course). It would take a lot of work and modification to the body and what not but I think I can do it. Besides, I'll already have the car and by the time I get done with the Z, the motor in her car will be shot. And, I figured, what else would I do with my spare time. But then again, who ever really FINISHES their Z?????
SHO-Z
I saw this in the 60s in LA. A VW bug with a 426 hemi in the back seat. A 5 hp Wisconsin engine behind the driver with a straight pipe out the back. It had real quiet mufflers on the hemi. It sounded like a VW running on 2 cylinders. With the slicks on the back and sound of the Wisconsin everyone that didn’t know said “Who are you kidding!†until they saw this thing burn out. Z-TARD
Here's a few ideas, not really in order of cool factor, just random: 1) Honda Element + Falconer V12 (V12 based on SBC, disgusting HP levels) 2) Scion XB + LS1/T-56 heh heh heh....... 3) Mid 80's Toyota Cressida wagon + 7MGTE (Built to destroy all) 4) Volvo P-1800 + GN V-6 (Mikey like P-1800's ) To make it even better, you have to get the bumper sticker that says: "My kid is an honor student at _______ elementary school", along with a faded Gore/Leiberman sticker as well. Right in the back window so your victims can see it through all the smoke as you pull away Mike
zguy95135
I say one of those early 80's turbo LeBarons with a big turbo and lots of boost, but with 14' w/hubcaps and the town and country style wood trim
zgeezer
My vote goes to the early swing axle Corvair coupe with 500 ci Cad Eldo with hydromatic in the back seat. No upholstery, metal mesh floor boards up front, metal mesh lawn chair seat, 13 inch wheels and bald rear tires that I saw parked in the Summit parking lot last Hot Saturday Nights in Reno NV. Car was so ugly you wanted to take it home. Drew a bigger crowd that the 350/350 crate engined plastic '32s parked in the same lot. Must have had 60' times out of this world. g

Chaparral2f
Saw a Corvair with a 455 Olds Toronado in the engine compartment. I work with a guy who has a bone stock looking '55 Chevy pickup with a built sb400 running a 6-71 Jimmy blower, Enderly hat injection and a huge Nitros bottle. the truck is kind of a frog turd green and nothing shows unless you look under it to see the monster tires, it looks totally stock. It also helps the illusion that the guy who owns it has a big white beard, and looks like someone's grandpa. Oh yeah, he can't drag race it anymore because he won't put a cage in it.
