big-phil
Are these bearings reuseable? I would like to concentrate my money on a MSnS system. Should I spend the money for new berings, or will these do fine? My wife is really starting to wonder why I'm not driving the car, so I need to get on the ball. roninjiro
for starters, how many miles are on the bottom end that you know of, and have you ever rebuilt the bottom end?
JMortensen
Don't reuse main or rod bearings. They aren't that expensive and they along with rings are the major wear items that you just don't want to use over and over. Being that they aren't hard to come by and they aren't expensive it's just crazy to reuse bearings.
big-phil
the motor had about 125,000 miles on it? No I have NEVER rebuilt the bottom end of a motor before. It seems like it is under $200?? out of the victoria british/black dragon catalog. So I will order all the stuff.
zeeboost
I'm pretty sure I didn't pay near that much for clevite bearings from O'Reilly's. I could be mixing up my v8 rebuild with my L6 rebuild, but I would check there before you pay $200 for a set of bearings from Black Dragon. big-phil
$200 was for bearings, and rings I have an old catalog, but the main bearings are$50 rod bearings $30 ring set $
Garrett76Zt
I used Clevite 77 tri metals. I know its a chunk of change, but if you're planning on boosting that Holset a lot I'd be careful with the stock pistons. Those ringlands will be the first to go at higher boost and any detonation. I dont see any reason you couldnt make 350 though.

big-phil
Is O'rilly's a good place to get a bearing set? It says they have Federal-Mogul rod bearing set for $23.99, and the same brand main bearing set $46.99, sealed power chrome piston rings $105.
BayAreaZT
How do the Clevite tri-metals compare to Togas? No difference?
Sumo
If your were just going to sell the car then go ahead and reuse it but since you are going to keep it just buy new ones. I think O'Reillys maybe able to order it for you, but im not sure on that one.
big-phil
OK so I'll order a Clevite 77 tri metals rod, and main bearing set. What kind of rings should I get??
dr_hunt
Yeah, those bearings are shot, too much dirt was in the motor. Cleanliness is next to godliness, keep that in mind. That block has some eyebrows at the top of the cylinders from what I've seen in the video, maybe not, but that's what it looked like. Eyebrow where the hone didn't touch some of the cylinder due to excess wear. I wouldn't expect that combination to last all that long, even with new bearings. IMO, it's better to wait, save the $$$, bore, use new pistons, rebuilt head, with valve job, guides, springs right, then go together. I think you'll be much happier in the end if your tune is right. My. $0.00000000000000000000000002 worth.
big-phil
Well guys, thanks for all the coments. I am really taking them to heart. I have thought all day about why I bought the Holset turbo, and big intercooler. I want HP, So I have figured out what I HAVE to do! I am going to buy forged pistons, new main, and rod bearings. DR. Hunt, yes there are some eyebrows at the top of the piston sleve. When I order the pistons do I get the next smallest bore size? Where are some places to get the forged pistons. Everywhere I look up on the web has no information for a L28ET. I have heard that the forged pistons are about $100 each. can I get them any cheaper than that? One more thing, is it safe to drive my car untill the motor is ready to install? I've gotta keep my wife off my trail, of what I'm doing. JMortensen
You can order Ross forged pistons from Summit Racing for $463 or something like that with rings, clips, and pins. Search and you should find the thread on it.
