  1. DUH! I forgot you had changed the sending untit. Your site is actually where I thought about using my Z28 tank, still debating that one.
  2. LOL, I knew I remember someone bringing that up a while back. Ever thought about repainting your gauge? Easy to make a "F" and "E" and vice versa. White magic marker and a black magic marker and you're done.
  3. Did you have to mount the tank backwards for how the LS1 was mounted? My LT1 filler is on the opposite side from the 280Z. Also isn't the fuel level sending unit output backwards for the datsun? In other words 0 ohms is full on one while empty on the other. Of course I could be totally wrong on that.
  4. Welcome to the board. That is one pretty engine, car is wicked too.
  5. LOL, I wouldn't know about the L6, I bought my 77 280Z with a Gen1 SBC in it already. Just upgrading to a newer technology with the LT1.
  6. Wish I had the resourses to go LS1 but ya gotta draw the line somewhere, LOL. The paddle shifter is in my long range plans too, they are just too cool.
  7. Thanks, I'll be at SEZ#8 with or without the Z, had too much fun at #7 to miss this one.
  8. At long last I am starting the LT1 transplant into my 280Z. JTR parts are on order, the header choice is getting close and today the donor car came apart. Its amazing what 4 computer technicians can do in 3 hours with a couple hydraulic jacks, an engine hoist, a bit of insanity and 3 saws-alls! Since my plan is to sell much of this Z28 nothing is left but the body shell. I called a few local salvage yards and no one would take the shell without some usable parts. So we cut it up in manageable chunks and will haul it to the dump ourselves. Now that the Z28 is out of the garage I will pull in the 280Z and pull the engine and transmission. The big picture will involve one of those "while I'm at it" things. I'm replacing much of the wiring harness too, since this car has been a continual source of electrical issues, mostly because of the previous owners obvious lack of electrical knowledge and or skills. I my dreams I hope to be running for SEZ8 but somehow I doubt that will happen. The Z28 engine and 4L60E. Gotta clean it up a bit and put the headers on. Z28 body, hard to believe this was once a whole body shell.
  9. I am no expert one this but am about to do the exact same swap. From what I have read and have been told by people who know this engine, removing the VATS from the computer does NOT always work, neither does the resistor "fix". I've head good things about the GM VATS or PASSkey II Bypass Module available on EBay for around $25. My plan is to leave the computer VATS setting alone, use the Bypass Module installing it with a connector to make it easy to remove which will reactivate VATS when I want it to work as a theft deterrent. I certainly don't know if this is your problem but it sure sounds like it. Good luck.
  10. Looking good, congrats. Its amazing how "at home" that LT1 looks in a Z. I am pulling my donor LT1 engine/tranny this weekend and probably the engine will come out of my Z in a week or so.
  11. Thanks Mike, I was hoping you'd respond. I sent in the on line order for my mounts and shaft adapter last night. Dale
  12. I heard that. I spent the first few months of owning my 280Z chasing electrical issues. I finally got the engine running right after replacing the battery, starter and alternator and rewiring most everything under the hood. The guy that made the original engine swap eliminated all the fusible links and replace them with nothing, WTF was he thinking! But there still seems to always something going on with this car electrically. I now have lost power to one of my tail lights somewhere between the fuse panel and the rear end. I am about to undertake a engine/tranny swap to an LT1/4L60E and while I'm at it I am going to totally rewire this thing. I work in the computer industry and know 30 year old wiring is a recipe for disaster. Its going to be a pain but I know in the long run I will be better off.
  13. All true, the Z28 was a great little road racer but not really a good street racer. In stock form they had little torque so unless you launched at high RPM and then it would just burn off those polyglas 70 series tires. In 1970 I had a 390 cu. in AMX and would look for Z28s to blow their doors off in a drag race. Get them on the highway where their high revving engine could work it was another story. BTW everyone I knew that had a '68 or '69 stock Z28 eventually blew the bottom end trying to constantly pull the advertised redline.
  14. I have a few buddies coming over Saturday to pull the engine and tranny and dismantle the rest of the Camaro. Know anyone that needs any '94 Z28 stuff? I've unbolted about everything possible on this car! After Satrday the should be nothing left but a totaled shell.
  15. Congrats on the sale. Hope you're satisfied with the price. Personally I think the guy got a deal.
  16. I ordered it so we'll see what happenes. Sure feels good to finally get started on this project. Engine/tranny comes out of the Camaro this weekend.
  17. Sounds like you're enjoying your conversion. BTW I bought my 280Z V8 from a guy in Post Falls Idaho.
  18. Bummer about not starting. Sorry I can't offer any suggestions, never played with an LSxx. I did have a similar issue with my LT1 Z28 that turned out to be a coil wire and the ignition module that just decided to die. I am also very interested in the steering column install. I pulled mine out of my '94 Z28 donor and was wondering how tough it would be to adapt. Tilt and all the controls would be nice. My plan is to use the Z28 dash and controls along with most of the body wiring, I pulled out the wiring today, OMG there is a ton of this stuff. Hopefully I can figure this all out, there must be 15 relays involved in there. I was also looking at the wiper assemby, good to hear it will work. Good luck with the engine debug.
  19. Holy cow dude!!! Wheelie bars?????? Good to see you running strong again.
  20. I am finally getting around to ordering JTR parts for the LT1 swap. For those who are running a LT1 with a 4L60E what tranny cross member are you using? JTR suggests getting an earlier tranny tail that has the bottom cross member mounting. The '94 Z28 Camaro I am taking this from uses the mounting method below. Anyone see any issues with the stock Chevy method? Obviously the Camaro cross member won't work but wouldn't the JTR cross member work with the Camaro rubber mount?
  21. There is some good information on the 280Z here. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/explodedviews/280z/[url=http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/explodedviews/280z/77fsm/DASH.GIF&imgrefurl=http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/explodedviews/280z/&h=1089&w=1476&sz=45&tbnid=5b_NU8cpmKkJ:&tbnh=110&tbnw=150&hl=en&start=8&prev=/images%3Fq%3D280z%2Bdash%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26rls%3DGGLD,GGLD:2004-42,GGLD:en%26sa%3DN][/url] But having a real shop manual is better.
  22. Ask me that in a couple months. I am going to attempt that very thing in my 280Z. My donor car is a '94 Z28 and my plan is to use the fuel tank and pump. Gonna take some fabrication for sure. Biggest issue is the filler neck is on the wrong side, hopefully I can just flip the tank around.
  23. Gotta be Tom Slick form the late '60s. Dude was the original Hybrid builder. He could turn the Thunderbolt Grease Slapper into any type of race vehicle and would always win. But of course I can relate to Wil-e Coyote way too much, LOL.
