JNJDRAGRACING Dyno runs
jnjdragracing replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
yeah I know, we were running a 390 gear ratio then, now we are running a 354 gear ratio, All I know is the Dyno is a humbling experience and real life. On the Dyno, it is messuring rear tire horse power, and they do it in drive only a 1 to 1 ratio, but the car assorbs hp, like the trans eats it up, the converter takes some, the drive shaft takes some, then the rear end takes some, then the half shafts with u-joints takes some, then the tires/ slicks asorbs some. All I know is the harder we turn it the more HP it makes. SEZ shoot out will show and tell all. We are hoping and going to try to dip in the high 8's in the 1/4 mile. We will be shifting at 7000 rpm in the 1/4, before we were shifting at 6500 rpm. Ask my brother, he is the one who messes around alot with the HP calculator. Email him at jerry@jnjdragracing.com. We will try the little pulley at SEZ, should pump us up to about 18 - 19 pds boost. -
We run the Autolite ARP plugs, these are the racing plugs made by autolite. They are 5/8 and short, but still have the reach I need. Check them out.

I have a 412 cu inch for you. I ran it a couple of times in my brothers Z-car, it did 6.40's in the 1/8 mile. It is just sitting around waiting for me to get started back on my Monte Carlo. It is complete and ran good. Has forged 10.1 pistons etc. There are some photo's posted on my website with the engine in the Z-car at that time. Go to www.jnjdragracing.com. Oh this is a 60 over 400, 4 bolt main engine, the engine temp would run around 180 on the street with a griffian radiator, I had 4:30 gear ration in the Monte Carlo and know problems driveing on the street, oh it ran 6.90's in the Monte Carlo with 125 shot of NOS, 7.20's on HP. This was a 3400 lb car.

The hole above the oil filter is another oil passage. Make sure it is plugged. The one higher toward the back is for a manual transmisson where the clutch linkage could use back in the old days before hydralics came into play.

sbc storage question
jnjdragracing replied to The Rototiller's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
If you have adequette lube on the bearings I would spin it a 1/4 inch. Than as the months go by spin it another 1/4 inch. This way it will not stay on the main bearings in the same spot for a year. If not sure about lubo on the bearings etc. Then pour in some oil. prime the oil pump. Place the dist back in the motor then spin it a 1/4 inch each month or so. This is what I do when I have an engine just sitting and have not had any issues. -
JNJDRAGRACING Dyno runs
jnjdragracing replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
WebPage is up and running now. All Dyno pulls are posted and also have some broken out in diffirent video segments. I also posted the dyno graphs just two of them best hp vs nos and hp vs mufflers. The supercharger like to be turned up on rpm, so the harder we turn it the more hp we make. We stopped at 6800 rpm but I know it will make power up to 7500 rpm. We are well over the 700hp mark on 20% nos if we turn it up on rpm also. Not to bad and at least we know what to do to make more hp now. We will be back at the dyno with the other pulley and will play with boost and maybe a 30% - 40% charge of NOS. Wish us luck..... See ya at SEZ shootout in March, can't wait....... John -
Is that 500hp at the flywheel or rwhp? Just curious......... I just finished with the dyno for rwhp and the numbers were not what I thought they would be. But at least I know now.
-
Well all I can say is the Dyno pulls are real, no more guessing at horsepower or estimating. The truth is the truth. I would rather know the rwhp anyway, that is real world. I am in process of posting video footage and graphs on my website now. www.jnjdragracing.com. Besure to check them out. I have the full 13 passes on video along with some od them broken out. Well the first two pulls only showed us with 453 rwhp, with 432 ftlbs torque. Made some changes with timing because the air / fuel was dead on, no need to change jetting. Timing change netted us another 55hp, total now is 518 rwhp, with 449 ftlbs torque. Worth the price of the dyno. Messed with the nitrous / intercooler at 20% nos and wow netted us another 133hp. Bringing the total to 651 rwhp, with 571 ftlbs torque. Wanted to play with boost, but the pulley I wanted to try would not fit good, and was running out of time. Did make one more dyno run with the mufflers on and lost 15 hp. We were really stressing the Z-car, look at the videos, blew or had a flat tire after the 3rd dyno pull, fixed and remountend then had to take back off and rebalanced and readjusted the car. It was alot of work but worth it. Plan on going back in a couple of weeks and play with boost. We are pushing 14psi now and with pulley change should be around 28psi. Website is still updating, it says two more hours so I guess check back with it tomorrow.

Battery Cutoff switches... Where do you mount yours?
jnjdragracing replied to Mikelly's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Hello Mike, We oringinaly installed our inside the fuel door. Since we running a fuel cell it was just not used to fill gas anymore. After we ran the car a few times and it was so fast I decided to move it to the rear of the car so if we had a misfortune at the track, it was in clear view for someone to kill the power. Hope this helps. -
My brother was in the area of Silver Dollar Raceway in Ga. earlier this week and stopped by the track , he even placed one of our decals on the sign at Silver Dollar Raceway. See below. Really looking forward to going and hopefully running good if not better than before. Just want to pass this your way. John See YA..............

Hey Scottie, Are you attending the shootout in March in Ga.? We are still planning on going, of course we will be bringing some spare half shafts. Thanks for all your support with our car. Anyway have a Merry Christmas and New Year. John -
Ls1 Z Dyno And Tune Day!!!
jnjdragracing replied to LS1 Z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Very impressive numbers, we want to put our car on the dyno before the z shootout to see what it is putting out and if we can squeeze some out of her. We try to tune at the track but we are running so good, plus on a dyno 3hours worth is like 6 months at the track. Any congrats on the numbers of the ls1. -

Yeah I was hoping the truck would stage with us. He did his burnout 1st then we did ours, but he backed down. It was the same way at the Elgin track, no one would line up next to us. i like to see us run other cars to give us a perspective of how much harder our car pulls on top end. Maybe at the z-shootout some cars will pull up next to us. It is all in fun anyway...... -

Yeah no wheelie bars, not sure where you would mount them on a independent supension. -

We have run a 5.84 in the 1/8 with a 3.55 r200 and a 9.54 in the 1/4 at 148mph. This time the half shafts did well, we ran them at the elgin track with no problems then at Carolina Dragway, but with the cooler air, we were putting out a lot more power. Just remeber to do easy burnouts after you do the burn out and you are comming out of it, just left off. Also you must minimize the squat of the rear to keep the u-joints in a line not angled. Good luck.... -
I posted the videos from 12/10/2005 at Carolina Dragway. 1/4 mile was shutdown so we only could run 1/8 mile. I filmed video from the stands and they had someone else filming video from the starting line, so you will have 2 videos of almost every pass. It shows a good prospective of the z-car. It was a cold night and it got colder and we kept running faster before we broke a halfshaft. We really tore it up this time, both u-joints along with the tube was twisted off. We were asking alot from the half shafts. Anyway I hope you all enjoy the videos, and as usually no one would line up next to us, I guess the Z-Car scared them or we imtimidated them.

We went to CarolinaDragway in Aiken S.C. lastnight 12/10/2005, They ran from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Burr it was a cold night and the SuperCharger loved it. I will rip some videos 1st of the week and will be posting them to my website. I will have two angles of video shoot, one from the front side in the stands and another one from the side / behind in the staging area. Well 1st pass was a great wheel stand, rna a 6.18 1/8 mile, 2nd pass was another wheel stand and 6.13 1/8 mile pass, 3rd pass - we tamed it down some, left normal and ran a 6.28 1/8 mile pass. Let a good frined drive the car, 1st time he has ever drove the car and he ran a 6.38 1/8 mile pass. Moved the timming advane back up and with the cooler night air we ran a wheel stand with a 5.86 1/8 mile pass. Last pass we broke a half shaft, but broke two u-joints and twisted the shaft in half. It was making awsome power. We ran this with only a 3.55 gear ratio - very impressive. I will let you know when the videos are posted.

We run Royal Purple motor oil , racing 21 blend of synthetic. I also run my engine a quart low. I have had no problems and wear is limited.

Hello Mark, I have wondered the same thing. My brother and I run our car and I would like to change to a solid rear for safety reasons. The IRS does hook when others don't. We have had no problems with our tracks but we are a grudge no time car. We do not run in any events where rules have to be followed. What worries me is if a half shaft broke on the other end of a 1/4 mile and we are pushing 150 - 160 mph is when it lets go and the change from left to right, we would loose control of the car. I welded flat steel under our a-arms so if we broke a half shaft on the other end it would not get caught. I have a friend who changed from IRS to Solid and he lost some et, because the car was not hooking as well. We are planning to run our car again this Saturday 12/10 at Carolina Dragway in Aiken S.C. and since he changed the ring and pinon from a 3.90 to a 3.55 it should be something to see, yes this is a 1/4 mile track. I will be posting video footage and times as always.

On our roots 6-71 blower I run red line 90 w oil, I was told it was the best to use, and I have not had any problems. Belt adjustment on my set up is probably diffirent then yours, I have to leave at least a 1/2 inch play in mine with it cold. When it heats up it tightens. As far as tuning I would go on the rich side 1st, you do not want to lean it out. I use a areomotive fuel reg. w/ boot sensitve, so when I build boost it raises the fuel pressure on a 1 to 1 basis. Make sure you hook it up at the bottom of the blower. If your headers glow red then you are lean. I hope this helps? John

New video footage 10/28/2005
jnjdragracing replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
We are estimating it to about 750HP, using our time slips and with a HP calculator. Which means 650HO at the rear tires, so far. We did switch out the 3.90 gear ratio and installed a 3.54 ratio. This was the 1st time it had been to the track with this combo, also the cold weather. The super charger is overdriven 2-1 ratio, I have another pulley which would put it 8-1 ratio which is the most I can use with racing fuel before I have to switch to Alky. But the car has already exceeded our expectations on how much power it can handle and do not want to push it much further. -
New video footage 10/28/2005
jnjdragracing replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
It does have a rollbar, but that's it. No subframe connectors, just the stock body. We will have to lift up and do a good inspection before we go again. I am glad my hook I welded under the front cross member was taller then the oil pan. It hit first and saved the headers and the oil pan when it came down both times. -
Well all I can say is the Super Charger Loves the cold air. Take a look at our website www.jnjdragracing.com. Our z-car/movies at the end of the page. We ran our 1st pass and decided not to video tape our loss, the little Z-car almost flipped over it was hooking so hard on the stock 200R suspension, 60 ft. times were the best of 1.34, our et was in the low low 6's in the 1/8, probably would of been the 5's if we had wheelie bars. Lossing time with the car picking up the wheels so so HIGH, First time I have ever seen a Z-car stock suspension lift the tires this high and live. I have seen this with full / sub frames but not a unibody with indepented suspension. Any way wanted to let every one know. John PS, where would be a good place to tie in wheelie bars on a stock z-car suspension? On a normal rearend I would weld the brace / flange to the rear end housing. There is not one on the Z-Car suspension....
