  1. Ok got it... thanks for the help. So, replace the whole rear end... I kinda new that but I was hoping there was a way to swap out the parts inside without removing it from the car. So, since this is a 71 and the mustache bar is different. In the 72-78 (is this right) the rearend is farther back in the later models. My question now is if I put a rearend and mustache bar in the 71 from a 72-78 will I be able to use the drivline I have now or since the rearend is farther back will the driveline be too short.. crap I hope some of this makes sense
  2. ok Tim we will try that... thanks Is this repairable with the unit in the car or do we take the rear end out. Also, his is a 71 so what yr zs whould be a good to look for at the dusty yard. Thanks, Bob
  3. Hey, I have a 350 powered 72... but this is not about me this time haha. My friends 71 (L28) has play in the differential. The car sometimes makes a clunking noise. we jack up the car in park the differential has some play in the rear end. All the u joint look fine. When one person holds one half shaft still and the other moves the opposite halfshaft there is maybe a half inch of play. So, this is not good right, and is most likely causing the clunking... right. So if this is the problem with the rear end what's wrong and how do we fix it. Should we replace the whole unit or can we repair the old one... aaauuhh its clunking http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/

    hood pins

Lone, I also went with the locking (Mr Gasket brand) hood pins. I'm looking at your pics on your web site and thats where I too would put them. Problem is it seems like after measuring that if I put them there where the bumper stop is, there would no be enough space. In other words it seems like this spot is too high. Did you use mr gasket brand and how... the way mine look with the thickness of the bolt head and the locking mechanism the hood would not lock tight. I didn't drill anything yet.. still in the staring at stage Thanks, bob
  5. hey flash, I used the msa kit... the edelbrock (v shaped) air cleaner clears the hood easy and I do have a msa strut bar that clears the air cleaner by about an inch. The air cleaner I have is not very big... any bigger and it would not clear the strut bar. web page
  6. I used the motorsport kit. It was easy to install, came painted. Included the GM rubber mounts. My HEI distributor at the base of the cap is no more than 1 inch from the firewall and at the top of the distributor cap about 1 3/16 inch from the firewall. No pounding of the tunnel required and I can't imagine the motor being much lower, the oil pan is already sitting pretty low. So, to those who say the msa kit Puts the motor in the scarab position... I think this is not correct. I do believe that the JTR mounts do put the motor back and down a little farther, but not by much. I'm not ragging on anyone, I'm just trying to give correct info for those that are considering the MSA kit. web page
  7. There is this 280z hood for sell online but I'm not sure if it will fit my 71 240z... My 240 is almost done..haha mild 350, th350. We put the battery in the back with a moroso bat box and installed the msd 6a box last sunday. We went with coilovers 250 lbs in all four corners and a b$m mega shifter... anyhow will the hood fit? I called msa auto and he said the 280z hood is a little longer but he didn't sound to sure of himself. Thanks
  8. Hey, whats happening. Do i need a return line? I am also running the holly blue with a regulator. I blocked off the second outlet from the regulator and ran a single line to the carb. I am not running a return line... am i doing this wrong? It seems to run good, but does seem over fueled. After a hard rip up the street at idle there is a little black smoke. Is this because there is no return line? 250 lb coilovers and shocks on all four corners from ground control are done, no test drive yet for the springs but it looks good sitting there and does seem happier. http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/ old pics before the tires and coilovers, new pics after sunday.
  9. oh yeah, one more thing. On my web site I have a classified ad board for anyone that would like to post car parts or cars for sale. I have just started it, i thought it might help everyone sell there used or new ooops parts. It's not ebay... but it's free. www.72zcar.50megs.com/
  10. The side pipes sound great. Not too loud. I was afraid they might be too loud but they have a deep sound, perfect I think. The pipes do make it impossible for the car to be a sleeper, but I wanted side pipes so I made that sacrifice. They do look and sound cool that's for sure. www.72zcar.50megs.com/
  11. Do Griffin radiators come equiped with hookups for a auto tranny. I went with the 86 camero radiator from radiator.com part #965 I think. If anyone wants I can double check the part # on the receipt when I get home. I was just curious about the auto tranny hookups on the griffin for the next one, haha Web page: http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/
  12. Pics of your 235's would be great. I want tall tires. How hard is it to roll the fenders. Is 225/60 15 the tallest and widest tire without alteration. I'm shooting for 26 inches http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/
  13. Pics of the Side pipes this sunday for sure. Sunday. Just put them on last sunday and no pics yet. ever notice how gravity seems stronger after laying on concret for 9 hrs Need tire and wheel info... I want to order them tomorrow man. 235/60 15 ta's on all corners sound good. Will they rub? backspacing, how much?
  14. The lowest part of the pipes are the heat shield mounted to the side of the pipes. Its low... 2.5 inches low. I need tall tires and stiff stock height springs and new shocks and i think I can get about 4 inches of clearance. We worked on the pipes all day sunday and the conecting pipes are higher than the side pipes. http://www.72zcar.50megs.com/
  15. Hey, haven't posted in a while, busy or something. Not sure. Car is ready to go including the dynoMax 52" side Pipes. The pipes are siting a little low (the highest we could get them though) I need to know what the tallest and widest tires i can fit on this 72 z machine without pounding or flaring. I have 14 inch rims now but am thinking of buying 15 inch rims. On the 14 inch rims I am thinking p215/70R-14 25.9 tall and 6.4 wide or p245/60R-14 25.6 tall and 8.0 wide On the 15 inch rims i am thinking p225/60R-15 25.6 tall and 7.2 wide p235/60R-15 26.1 tall and 7.6 wide p245/60R-15 26.6 tall and 8.0 wide Not sure what to do about tires. Check the web site out, there is some pics of the project.
  16. Hey. I'm to the point now all I need it exhaust and tires. The engine starts (open headers. hahahha. Neighbors love me) I want to put side pipes on the 72 z but everyone I talk to round here says NOOOO don't do it. The custom muffler shops say the will drag the ground on the slightest incline or speed bump. And they won't do the work. That's ok I prefer to do it myself anyhow, I just need one person to tell me to do it and it will work. Summit racing has DynoMax side pipes 52" chrome pipes for 205$ and Hooker side pipes with reverse flow muffles (quieter I think) for 350$ that I can get the hookers in black. So, what does everyone think. will sise pipes work with stiff springs and tall tires? Oh yeah, my local m-shop wants 600$ to put a single 2 1/2 inch pipe in the original position (or close to it) and a flow master in the rear. Not to happy about that. 600 bones and he said no way for dual exhaust because it won't fit. I called another shop and he bust out laughing saying he has not put side pipes on a car in 20 years. null
  17. I just installed the holley blue. let you know soon. With Holley side pipes I don't think it will be a problem. hahha
  18. Has anyone considered the 52" sidepipes made by Dynomax for $205.99 for the pair. Is this a bad idea? How load would it be... ba da da da On a separate note: Has anyone ever mounted an alternator with a short water pump.
  19. Having trouble with the brackets for the alternator. SBC with short water pump, trying to attach passanger side. I bought the header mount from summit but it won't work, alternator hits the valve cover or is too high for hood clearance. Bought some chrome crap from kragen, it almost works but the alternator is right on touchin the fender well leaving no room for adjustment. So, can someone tell me what mounts to buy and where to buy them( part numbers if possible) Thanks
  20. davy, I bought the MSA engine and tranny mounts before I found this site. After reading what everyone has said about the JTR mounts I thought I made a big mistake... But I am very happy to say that the engine and tranny fit very well, the mounts are strong, painted black enamel, and in the set back position. Engine went in right the first time, didn't have to pull it for adjustments. The tranny mount is a big U shape that fits in the tunnel. I am very please and would buy them again. For $197 you get the conversion mounts for a SBC and 700r4 and also included for the $197 is the stock GM engine mounts and the tranny rubber mount. It would be interesting to measure and see what setup (JTR or MSA) is lower and farther back. One think I can say, the instructions are really poor that come with the MSA mounts. If anyone from MSA reads this... better get better instructions and the pics are really bad. But the mounts are great! I did buy the JTR book for 40 $ and is money well spent. Now for the fun part, I bought the B$M mega shifter and installed it sunk down with a little cutting of the shifter hole and custom homemade mounts. UUgGhh not low enough, the shifter plate hits the neutral safety switch bracket! crap have to redo it. That's ok, when I'm done its going to be lower. The first time I sunk it down 1 1/2 inches. I'm going to try 2 1/2 if it will clear the driveshaft. Has anyone done this? Can you tell me how far you sank it in the shifter hole and how you made your brackets? I have a good idea what to do but added input is always good. It's going to be a bad ride, low, mean and black. hahhahhhahahha
  21. Hi, am in the middle of a 350 conversion in my 72 240. The motor and tranny is in and bolted up and was actually fairly easy and fits like a glove... the msa mounts are a little more but not only come with the conversion mounts but also come with new GM mounts that bolt to the side of the engine and a new rubber tranny mount. a plus) and really fit great!
  22. ok, now I see. the camero one is plastic and aluminum! I did not know that. Guys i talk to around here say to stay away from them that they are crap. So is GRI-1-25202-X Chevrolet: 24 in. length x 19in. the right one at summit. It has two rows of 1 in. diameter tubing, is this right? it is 181.95 $ I know I'm starting to be a pain about this rad thing but i must be sure. hhahahhah, engine is in. I have been storing this car for 15 years in my garage.
