How much does your Z weigh?
John Scott replied to Thumper's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
'72, sbc V8, t56, full interior, 3" exhaust, bumpers. Besides V8 and t56, most of the added weight from r200, sway and strut bars. 2530 lbs. -
I'll raise a my stein to that! After an early morning bike lesson, Annika, my 5 year-old daughter and I took the Z and went to a car show earlier this A.M. We both loved it and the old 60s music. I was laughing when they tried to falg me in as a participant. Always fun to get the questions and compliments when you're in the hybrid. About ready to fire up the grill and throw on some brats. Being a Dad,... can't think of anything better. Happy father's day to the rest of you dads.

I was just glad to scroll down and see it was a girl, whew!

You can't cry foul by saying someone is lighter, got a turbo, running at sea level, street legal, power comes in a bottle. Reliable? Trouble free? If you are talking timeslips, and we are talking timeslips, whoever is fastest wins. One 8.45 ride and you're on the top.

..priced toluene lately? Also getting hard to find. Last I checked $15+ a gallon. So much for cheap home brew. Here in Colorado, one month ago 112 octane was less than a 1/3 of this price, no guessing, blending. Doesn't take much to add a safety margin. Three gallons added to my 6 remaining in tank of pump yeilded close to 100 octane.

I like the idea of purging the list every year or so. Cars change ownership, members come and go, configurations no longer exist. Recent timeslips give the active HybridZ racers more relevance and credibility. I know other sites renew every year such as: "2006 timeslips" and archive the old ones for those that need to bask in "once upon a timeslip". At the very least the entry should include the date. BTW Maxtor, 161mph av. is smokin' What kind of aero mods are you using?

No offense grump, personal experience speaking, but the rope can get tangled in the cylinder, and then the heads come off,...a major PITA. If you can't pull your heads in the engine bay, the engine gets pulled. Air compressor fitting can be modified, or easily made to fit even the tight headers on my engine. I cut down an SK tool with a hack saw and jambed a rubber hose in it. Been using it for years, 60 seconds to modify. Also simple to make with the insulator knocked out of a sparkplug. A light tap on the stem with a rawhide hammer frees up sticky locks. At least with my engine, with piston at TDC if air pressure fails the valves only drop a little before contacting piston. You don't need compressor on the whole time, only removing or ready to reinstall. Pull the valves back up and pressure holds fine. I change out my valve stem seals way more often than I'd like, and I've gotten really fast at it. After experiencing the nylon rope incident, a little 3/4 hp air compressor set at 100 psi, IMO is the preferred way. John

Dan goes to all this trouble to bring the timeslip back..So what is everyone waiting for?.... Post em up! Timeslip on the top of the page^^ . If you can figure it include your DAs. I might not be the fastest, but bet I've got the record for highest density altitude! Not to discredit anyone, but I'm amazed at the lack of timeslips so far.

How many HybridZers does it take to change a light bulb?
John Scott replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
Don't forget the 12 or so that will plug in formulas, apply theories, redesign the light bulb, change wattage, socket, switch, wiring, a dozen times, thoroughly enjoy the process, yet never turn it on. -
Running a business which requires a lot of physical work is great when you are young, but don't wait too long. I nearly destroyed both wrists, can't get on my knees, and shoulders suck, currently putting off a partial wrist fusing. The thought of no shifting the Z for 10 weeks or more is hard to take during the summer. You're doing the right thing. Good Luck!

How can you draw a vacuum on the cranckcase when the breather and pcv is in the same valve cover? Each valve cover? IMO No, PCV on one side, breather on the other. I run a pcv on one side and a "restricted" breather on the other to create vacuum, but still allow flow, but that's another story. If you were asking if you need a pvc with breathers in each cover, no, but it helps to rid the crankcase of fumes/blowby.

How to check if cam is timed right?
John Scott replied to Alf's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Hmmmm. This is so much like the problem I was having. I disconnected the secondary side and it would run to redline. If I just ran the primary side up to the point where secondary linkage starts, same thing, it would rev right past the "wall". Try it, If it runs fine on the two barrels, then forget the cam timing problem. Your pressure is low, but black smoke indicates too rich. Something is wacky with the metering. Right after it occurs, can you shut it down and look down the barrels? Are the boosters wet, dripping, or dry? Pull the sight plugs. Still just level with the bottom or running out of one side or the other? Do your run a plug or PV? PV check out OK? Someone have a carb you can borrow? Even if it carb is too big, you might have a bog or hesitation, then should pick up. -
How to check if cam is timed right?
John Scott replied to Alf's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I'm jumping on the fuel system bandwagon, too. I ran into an identical problem, http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=77397&highlight=carb , with my procharged 4.3. I would rev it to xx rpm and it would hit a wall, just like my msd rev limiter. Find a pressure guage and verify that you have correct fuel pressure when the problem occures. If it is way too high, like in my case, too much pressure was overwhelming the holley at the higher rpms. At least you could cross it off the list before you start on the cam theory. I've also seen debris on the fuel pick up that only pulled up at high loads. John -
What to do? I'm freaking out!
John Scott replied to BillZ260's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Its possible the tranny came from a 6 cyl Camaro. 14 spline with too low 3.76 first gear and 220 lb/ft torque rating. Not a good match for a v8 Z. Hate to say it, but better now than after you get it installed. I'd search for a stronger V8 T5. I would assume if it has the tilted bell housing its from the Camaro and not the S10. Perhaps you can still use the bell housing and search for another trans. Sorry to hear about your dog. Bummer! John -

http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=67491&highlight=Rick%27s Search forums I have Vic jr,+ 1/2" phenolic spacer and K&N 3.5 x 14 filter. Not all drop bases are =, ditto for lids. The lowest drop base I've seen is from Ricks first generation http://www.firstgen.com # EP-102. MikeC gets credit for this find. I cut off breather tube on my application and used chrome lid from Holley 14". Its real close to hood, but no contact. w/o spacer 4" element fits.

This is a relevant topic as we all will eventually have to face changing fuels in our Zs .25 cents cheaper and it will cost you more to drive the same distance. Since the afrs are less for ethanol, you'll see worse mpgs. They should discount the price for that reason alone. Colorado has had the 10% for years, and in the past, mandated during winter months. I pumped 30 gallons every 6 days into my work truck. The 10% alone resulted in 2-3 fewer mpg. You also don't hear about the problem with more NOx emissions, greenhouse gasses. In my mind, if it contains more oxygen, your non flex fuel designed car's system will detect it and not run leaner, only burn more to keep the ratios correct. In antiquated carbureted non computer car, yeah, but those with a screwdriver will take care of that with jetting. Not a good selling point. How many cars are carbureted? IMO Its all a lot of hot air. I'm all for less foriegn dependency, but wish they'd state all the facts. We just got the OK for another ethanol plant near us. I know its not methanol, but Maybe Dr Hunt can teach us all how to put it to good use John

you're a gear head when.. You pull your car cover off after a few weeks and its almost like undressing your sweetheart. You'd rather taste motor oil and gear lube on you sandwiches than waste precious wrenching time washing your hands. Instead of family pictures, your mantel has a (had) a new polished blower drive on it. You've hidden measuring cups, utensils, turkey basters in the trash because you know who is going to find them covered with car gook. You stop your wife/ girlfriend in mid sentence and roll down the window so you can listen to a particularly nice exhaust note of the car hitting the onramp. John

Dyno Tuning: This is why you do it (56k beware)
John Scott replied to Drax240z's topic in Fuel Delivery
Thanks Drax240z! Great thread. A good dyno with a great operator is an equally great tuning device. The only one in our town is a SF-840 used more by racers than ricers and diesels looking for a big #s on the printout. Could you address how the figures relate from a Dyno to the 1/4 mile MPHs calculators we see all over the internet? Which dyno, Dynojet, Mustang, etc is going to give the most similar #s to the 1/4 mph equations? I know not everyone is tuning for the fastest 1/4, but It seems to be a common topics. John -

Looks like you need more tire lol Thanks for sharing! So how did you mount the "Door cam"? -
Can't answer your question, but you might want to read before going AFR: http://www.chevytalk.org/threads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1490317/an/0/page/2#Post1490317
