  1. Ive got a friend in chicago that has a 350+HP maxima with a chipped ecu. Its a very through setup, so I dont doubt its tunablity. How much HP can the Z31 read up too? The maxima MAF is pretty well proven with the turbo maxima guys. I really like Megasquirt as well, Ill be using that on a project next year. But I have every thing but a few sensors here and there and wiring and I can either get the wiring from the junkyards or from maxima.org when people part out their cars. So its a much cheaper option for me. And if I did get a MS, Id HAVE to build it. Know what I mean. Now of course Im regretting selling the harness out of my 5 speed parts car maxima, but I traded it for a perfect flywheel I couldnt find any where at the time. I was going to do the z31 conversion but Id have to find a turbo one and buy the maf and ecu, this way I only buy some wiring and a few cheap sensors and use my spare parts. 10 year old wiring? As to opposed to 20 and 30 year old wiring? That'd be a non issue ~Alex
  2. The 89-94 GXE and 89-91 SE maximas all have the VG30E engine like the Z31's, nearly identical dis and similar ecu setup. My idea was to swap the maxima ECU and harness and all that onto the Z when it came time for better management. Its also able to be chiped and tuned like the Z31 but alot more common. The MAF's for example can take 300HP no problem and are pretty reliable and every where. I have the ECU and 2 MAFs (I have a 90SE maxima) laying around and the local yards always have at least 2 maximas, usually 4 or more. so the wiring harness isnt hard to get. Oh and I have a whole distributor as well. So Im thinking I can swap all the maxima sensors and wiring and all that over chip the ecu and run it on 2.8L turbo fury!!! Any way I need to check on things like coolant sensor compatability and other small stuff like that, but we'd also have a knock sensor to mount some where! LMK what you guys think. Should be a good alternative to MS to ppl in my situation. ~Alex
  3. Alot of guys get a Z31 MAF and ecu and wire it in. But thats mostly turbo guys.Im not sure if the swap is similar egnough, the search is free use it! Im actually going to go with a maxima ECU and wiring and MAF since I have the ecu and can get the wiring and ecu's all day long and cheap. I also have 2 extra maf's so I really just need the wiring and stuff to chip it. ~Alex
  4. sounds good. I cant wait to get it really. Ill def tune it up before I leave thats for sure. what was your MPG? I assumed 20mpg and added 10% for fuel and a bunch for food so Ill have plenty of cash. ~Alex
  5. no ♥♥♥♥ thered be a market at $1000! Thats less then 350Z performance heads available now! I couldnt even guess at what you'd have to pay to get one of those heads. But why doesnt some one copy them? I mean they are out of production, lets get some more maid! ~Alex
  6. Not the same bolt pattern, you need at least an adaptor plate. Are you having durablity problems with the z33 6speed? ~Alex
  7. yea an NA KA really isnt too productive, the most people have been able to get is 160-180HP. Its long stroke isnt very rev friendly. Now If you got the SOHC, theres a few options. Mostly because theres cams and alot of other parts for the SOHC block. I have a 90 s13 with the SOHC and Im going to toss a small turbo on it. Im just looking for about 200HP, nothing to really get me in trouble, thats what my Z's for. You can get the SOHC pistons and put them in your block and get 11:1 compression. That with the right cams would net some good power for not too much money. Still not more then 170-180 tho. KAs run about 120WHP stock. OTOH theres always boost. A small turbo will give similar power but be very upgradeable. Check out KA-T.org, freshalloy.com, zilvia.org (not sure on that one I dont go there much) lets see....then my 2 local ohio sites (ohiodrifting.com and ohionissans.com). AIM me and Ill put you in touch with some one that knows how to build a high HP SOHC. Start searching Freshalloy, great side probably one of the best for nissan/infinity stuff w/o that bandwagon BS (only a little of it in the 240sx forums but LOTS of good info) ~Alex
  8. 89-94 maximas any of them. 90 and 95 amps I believe. I need to double check that, but thats withing 5-10 amps for either. the 92-94 SE maximas with the DOHC engine have 5 more amps then the other maximas. ~Alex
  9. Well Im about to pick up a 280zx from a friend, running and all. Its just got a little rust here and there, still very driveable. This is from western maryland, about 280 miles from door to door. My friend is going to drive his '90 325is or accord, and Ill drive the 280 back, should be fun. I bought a 83 turbo setup. Engine,tranny, driveshaft, rear complete subframe, complete engine and body wiring harness, front subframe and shocks, uh ECU, turbo dash, misc stuff. Of coruse the turbos the important part! Oh and a great shape radiator! and the starter is there...110K miles! So the NA car, I figured Id bring the starter, radiator, new hoses, a tire and rim I have from my 240sx, and a new battery and one from my 240, the turbo alt (or a maxima alt and w/e else the max alt swap needs). My friend owns the car, and he said hed do any thing I need him too within reason. Im thinking 4 new tires, oil change, sea foam, drain coolant, and air freshen the interior. Anything else to add to the list? It starts and runs as is but isnt very smooth, we both think because its been sitting. No problem, sea foam it! well ZX injectors can stand sea foam right? also I figured Id buy new rad hoses, and put my turbo rad thats in great shape in as well, pure water as well. He said the stater grinds some times but it can be push started. Also the alt. Im going to have my turbo alt tested tomorrow. Ill probably pull one from a maxima at PNP (its got like 110K) and have it rebuilt later. Any thing else I should worry about? And dont tell me to trailer the car. Its at least $380 vs me and my friend's gas and food at $120. All the things Im doing or bringing with me is stuff I would have done any way. And I have AAA, they can tow me. I really cant wait. The cars in good shape and just needs some derusting which Ill take care of no problem. Then swap in the turbo engine! Buhahaha. ~Alex

  11. I thought the z31 turbo was the same as the L28ET's just with watercooling? ~Alex
  12. Wait its a speed density setup? I dont really think thats going to work with out messing with the ECU's maps. The ECU is expecting the Jeeps TB, IM setup, and most of all 4L of pistons pulling air. Not 2.8L thats a big diffrence and a speed density setup really relies on the major parts of a setup always being the same. Have you researched more on that? ~Alex
  13. Charging voltage shoudnt go over 14.8-15v normally. Get your alt and battery checked at advance or autozone or napa. ~Alex
  14. Have you guys looked at VG30E TB's? They have 2 semi joined ~45mm openings and would be common as they came on 84-94 maximas (only 92-94 GXE's) and some Z31's had them.   16. You'll need bigger CC injectors depending what the current duty cycle is. the sociomatic AFR is around 10:1. pure E is 7:1 or 9:1, its been a while since Ive read about it. ~Alex
  17. I may be picking up a 260z soon. Its in usual shape, but no frame rust. Its missing carbs and may be locked up but I have a 83 ZXT setup I just bought to put into it. I got a 83 turbo engine, with the wiring,ecu, tranny, driveshaft, longnose R200, rear supbframe with brakes, and the engine is mounted to the front subframe with brakes, radiator, ac pump, and I think thats about it other then the 83 turbo dash. My Q is will everything bolt up just like it was in the 83? do I need a diffrent driveshaft? Hmm what else did I need to ask? Im planning on replacing the ball joints, tie rods, and PS rack boots and doing a full tuneup before I start it up. Maybe not the ball joints at first, depends on my $$. Im also looking into clutches and reading a tonn on here. Also if the l26 is in good shape, isnt the head that you put on a l28 and get high compression? Im getting a running NA 81 280zx with usual rust (begnning on the frame, very saveable) that will be my DD for a while as my s13 will be too harsh for a DD. Eventually the 260 would be my DD and the 280 FS. Any way if you guys have some links I need to read or just search LMK and thanks for the info! EDIT- I also need an exaust for the turbo, I didn't look close at it but it looks cut. Upgraded DP for the stock turbo any one? I also want to remove emissions to clean every thing up, what to leave for DDing? My 240sx has one idle air valve, dont remember which one, and the FPR. What does the Turbo Z need as a bare minmum. ~Alex
  18. Which KA pistons? Early SOHC (in the s13) have 9.1:1 comp, most engines have the 8.6:1 ratio. DOHC have 9.6:1. SOHC= 89-90 and DOHC 91-98 ~Alex

  20. Look for the 240sx conversions on Freshalloy. Fred Allen Burge and Broaner are the ones your looking for. The VQ weighs less then a KA. It weighs ALOT less then a VG. The tranny is off a Z33, and you'll need the Z33's oil pan and starter. Use a maxima flywheel and clutch for durability over the Z33's and get a TOB spacer like Broaner. Get the ecu and wiring out of a 95 maxima. Also did you want the VQ30DE or the VQ35DE? 3L is simpler but the 3.5L will have more power unless boosted then the extra .5L is good for turbo spool. Guys on maxima.org have super and turbo and N20'd both motors and they are very durable. ~Alex
  21. VQ30DE, strong as hell, and cheap and every where. I think there good till about 450WHP or so in maximas. Alot of guys are putting the 3L and 3.5L VQ's in s13's and S14's (im putting a 3L into my s13 in the next few weeks). You have to use the z33 oil pan and tranny but its a 6 speed and they are cheap. Oh and the 3L and 3.5L bolt up the same for trannys, IM's and are the same external dimensions pretty much. TT the VQ30DE and have some fun! It may have 10:1 comp but they love boost. Plus the VQ30DE weighs about 75lb or so less then my KA24E, and its shorter. My weight is going be in the middle of my car:) ~Alex
  22. It was the maf. I unpluged it and drive it 40 miles home. It ran as smooth as butter, and then while idleing I think the t belt skipped a few teeth, or it spun a bearing. Im putting in an engine I have laying around, and then my friends selling it. My maxima VG has 166K mile and was babied and serviced regularly. How much do you think he could get out of it, and the chassis has about 133K and is very clean. When I got home and it was still running good, I used some maf cleaner and it and it ran great other then idle so I just need a maf. Will a 90 maxima maf work? I have 3 extra... ~Alex
  23. Oh thats right. I lost the post, and I was too tired to do anything other then link, I was falling asleep at the computer. But its an 86 NA, and the engine will spin over fine no problems, no bad noises. What I ment is we bought 6 plugs, and I only had time to replace the 3 on the passengers side of the engine, Im about to do the drivers side sunday when we get to the car. I pulled a fuel pump out of my parts car maxima and we're installing it tomorrow. Im also bringing extra relays and fuses. Ill get it running. ~Alex

Cliff notes- Z wont start. Replaced 3 spark plugs, have 3 more, replaced fuel filter, and rotor (advance didnt have a cap) and battery. Will idle smooth as silk some times. starting fluid will let it run at high rpm. ~Alex
