I only have the experience with the John's kit for the LS1. It moves the AC to the driver side, different compressor, but it has plenty of room and the kit comes with all the hoses, and a new drier and pressure switch. Darned easy and for a very fair price. And it worked with a stock Camaro serpentine belt. Anyone want a good GTO belt? Mike

Ok, you can use the block huggers from JTR (sanderson headers) with the JCI mount kit for the LS1. Straight pipes will give you permanant hearing damage as well as problems with the local police- I know how they are in Spirit Lake- I got a ticket there once (School zone violation at 7am on a Saturday morning). And if you want to run a manual trans with an LS1 a T56 is the only way to go. As pop said above SEARCH and you shall find.

Pontiac GTO LS2 - what needs changing please ?
m1noel replied to ZHeadV8's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
I would probably just use the LS1 pan you have available and when you hit a road track put in an extra half quart? Mike -
I love my Corbeau leather $eat$ but they were a little $pendy. Great comfort for long drive, but they do sit maybe an inch higher than stock. Mike

Glad you got it going, sorry, I cant help with the carb. Mike

Pontiac GTO LS2 - what needs changing please ?
m1noel replied to ZHeadV8's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
makes sense to me now- Oh and you have mistaken me for someone with skills. Sometimes I have to do it wrong a few times before I figure it out, or I can just ask someone who's already done it (like MAS280). The other thing I forgot to add about the stock shifter is that with the linkage under the white plastic thing, it is just too far back. The reason to get the clutch master, is that it is just too simple to put it where the Z master was, plug in the GM quick-connects, and go. Cuts down on adapters and such, and they usually throw that in with the engine/tranny anyway. Mike -

M1noel - my chassis has been built to have a tank across the centre of the car behind the seats, I will not be able to use the standard tank. I can get the original pump / sender unit but what exactly are the issues ? Is there any reason that it cannot just have twin pumps as planned ? If you have to have the ECU reprogrammed anyway does it make a difference which way to go ? I was saying that I really don't think there are any issues. And, I really don't know why you would need two pumps. I am only using one. Mike -

I used the stock gas tank and had all the fuel issues programmed out of the ECM. Works fine. The shifter issue is that inside the white plastic cover (which will not allow the trans to fit up high enough into the stock shifter hole) has about 3 inches of linkage that can be eliminated by using the B&M. I found mine on EBAY, the best price was from Atlantic Speed and they were great to work with. The shift action is much better, direct, and shorter with the B&M. Mike -
Your car is way too beautiful to not take the guys advice and do a bunch of research before you just slap parts on an engine and throw it in... MIke

I can add a few things- The oil pressure sender adapter from JCI will not work with some headers-will be fine if you use his. Mas280 and I moved them to the place where the original GTO unit was, using adapters. You will need an aftermarket shifter such as the B&M unit as the stock GTO shifter will not fit. I really like the way the B&M shortens the shifts. The only place I could find a stock camaro motor mount was from GM. You need it for the left (driver in the US) side but they are both the same. As stated in previous posts, you need the Camaro oil pan, pickup tube (screen), and windage tray. Also a dip stick and dip stick tube. I also used the throttle by wire.. I think it was easier by far than a cable linkage would be, and it works great. An electronic speedo, or a CableX box for a stock Z speedo, will be needed to use the signal from the VSS on the T56. We all seem to be having tach issues. Ulises is using after market (auto meter) but is not working too well. I am trying to use the stock tach but it is back at JCI trying to get it to work at all. Make sure you get the clutch master cylinder from the GTO as well as the gas pedal assembly. And the wiring harness from all three plugs to the ECM. Two of them go to the engine and trans, the 3rd has all the wires that need to be spliced up to the Z. Also there is a plug near the MAF plug at the front of the engine that you will need to run ignition voltage to for power to the coil packs. I used a big ford 2-speed electric fan I got from JCI. Of course you will need a fuel pump and regulator. Ulises and especially MAS280 were a great help to me with my swap. PM any of us when you come up with questions. My swap took only about a month and a half with only a couple of hours here and there. I couldn't believe how easy is really was. Mike -
Congrats, we'd all love to see some pic's and video. Mike

Bought my 78 in 82. It was down a couple days in 85 for a new head, headers, carbs. Down for 4 months for complete strip, paint and interior last winter. Down for 2 months or so this winter for the LS2/T56 swap. Now- Yeehawwwww! Had a half dozen 240's and 280's too, some ran, some didn't... Oh, and the 05 350 runs when the wife wants to drive it and the weather is good.

GO Clive go! What was the problem with the trans mount?

you guys are all nuts. A Z should never, never by modified in any way. lol

Anyone ordered a JTR Conversion manual lately?

Could be Mike is typing it up right now! -
Thanks everyone for your ideas. Mike

I did the Johns kit but installed an LS2. There are a few differences that caused a few minor challenges. But they were minor and easily overcome even with my limited skills. John's manual takes it for granted that you do have a little knowledge going in. I had to read a couple pages a few times to get it to make sense (to me) but it did make sense. I did use JTR's headers and radiator and they were nice items. Johns mounts were very well engineered and fit very well in my car. The swap took way less time than I thought it would. No matter what engine/trans you decide on, make sure you get everything you need before you start. There are a million things that could hold you up if you don't. They guys on this site have done every swap imaginable and will help you through it. Mike

LS1 Second Start Attempt....Success!!

Congrats flyer, glad you found the problem. Mike -
So, I get a CableX figure of 57705. Try 58800 so switches 3,6,10, and 11 should be on. And make sure #12 is off. That should get you in the ball park.
-
Yeah, thats way different than my setup but it should be easy to figure out. I really think it was 17 though. And make sure you hook it up directly to the VSS, not out of the ECM. I found out that won't work. MIke
-
I cant remember either, it was either 17, or 40. I set mine up one way and it was way off so I went with the other, then went out with my GPS and found it was 8% off so I just used their numbers adjusted the 8% changed the switches and now it is on exactly. Only took me 2 runs down the road to make it work. What's your gear ratio and tire size? Mike

Sweet, and shiny too. Mike

LS swap is more powerful, more driveable than L6!
m1noel replied to m1noel's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Sorry no driving vids yet just the walkaround and up my driveway- http://videos.streetfire.net/search/...af01263d96.htm And no its not a beast in the corners. It seems to steer easier and turn in quicker than with the boat anchor L6. I will post the weight differences when I get to the scales. I'll be pulling the ecm and sending it to Diablosport with my new Predator this weekend so they can try to get them to work together. The existing performance tune (speartech) is blocking the Predator right now. Oh yeah, the rear steers way easier now. I will get some driving vids up as soon as I can get one of my boys to help hold the camera. And I don't know if it has larger boobs or not SB, But I do think it has bigger balls (bearings?). Mike -

No offense taken, just didn't really think when naming the thread. I just can't believe how different and BETTER this car drives now. I drove my wifes 350Z last night for the first time since my swap. I seems so slow now. I still have a few small issues, and still no tach but have been out driving every chance I get. Mike
