  1. Navy for 6 years, got out and worked as a pipefitter (bought the Z at this point in my life)and then a chassis fabricator at Shelby American. Got laid off along with 50% of the rest of the workers there and went back into the Navy. April will be 13 years in for me. As a Hull Technician in the Navy, my job has ranged from unclogging toilets and sewage systems to sheetmetal fabrication and precision TIG welding on submarine reactor components. Right now I mostly hang pictures and fix drinking fountains on shore duty, which will change in a few months when I transfer to a small boat unit and get deployed to the Middle East. Mike
  2. Wow. It's like Steve Erkle and David Hasselhoff got unleashed in the "Pimp My Ride" garage. I'm gonna have to ride my bicycle to work for a week now just to get that image out of my head. Mike
  3. WAAAAAYYYYY too much good information on here. What started out as a "simple" engine swap turned into: "Might as well take care of that rust while I'm at it...." "Might as well go for the stroker kit while I'm at it...." "Might as well beef up the chassis by installing a cage, while I'm at it, of course...." "Might as well try out some of that rustoleum eveyone's been talking about WIAI (While I'm At It)...." "Carbon fiber can't be that hard, let's make a new dash WIAI...." Coming up Next: "That Bugatti is pretty quick and all, but I bet my Z could catch it......":twak: Mike
  4. I have two. The 240 ran when I bought it 6 years ago, and then I found this site. It hasn't run since. My 280 also ran when I bought it, but in the process of getting it to run well enough to get smog checked, I started chasing gremlins around the engine bay and now it doesn't run either. Sometimes I like to sit in them and make engine noises followed by screeching tire noises..... Mike
  5. Amen to that. My refund has already been applied to bills, etc. but when I get back from deployment in 8 months I'm going to be getting one of these: http://www.50bmg.net/ EDIT: To be kept in my home state of AZ, of course.
  6. Aux, check the safety shroud on the back of your bolt, a buddy of mine took his bolt apart and when he put it back together he was short by one turn threading it back on, hard to notice visually, but it takes just enough off the travel of the firing pin so that all it does is leave little dents in the primers. If it is the firing pin going bad, check with Sarco for a replacement: http://www.sarcoinc.com/mauser.html#4 Isn't it about time you add a No. 4 Enfield to your collection? Mike
  7. I ended up moving about a month or two after I painted that test area. That pretty much derailed the Z project for a while. Since then I've just been distracted by lots of other projects and life in general. I'd like to start up on it again, but I'm going to be deployed to Kuwait in another couple of months so I've been pretty busy getting ready for that. Hopefully after 6 months away from it I'll have a bit more motivation to get it running, painted, and back on the road. I've flip-flopped a few times now between DuraCoat and Rustoleum. I'm really impressed with some of the results members here have had with rolling on rustoleum like Big Phil and OTM. On the other hand, the DuraCoat finish on my longslide .45 has only just begun to wear thin on the internal rail surfaces. The exterior shows no signs of wear at all other than the backside of the grip being slightly shiny from getting polished by my palm during recoil. I'm tending to lean more towards DuraCoat since I like the semi gloss finish and am too lazy to wetsand rustoleum to a glass finish. Now to choose a color..... Mike
  8. Hah, mixing the exhaust in way up in the front like that might actually dilute it enough so that it wouldn't be as bad when it comes back in the car through the rear hatch seal Seems like no matter where the exhaust is routed on these cars, it finds it's way back in anyway. Mike
  9. I'm pretty sure that it's just particle board, like the peg board stuff you get to hang tools on. You could probably take the doors off of the car and lay them out flat, then put some wet particle board over the inner surface of the door followed by lots of sandbags for weight. This would force the particle board to conform to the contour of the inner door surface. Of course you would probably need to sandwich the particle board between some layers of plastic dropcloth to keep the water and sand out of the doors. After it's pressed for a few days or weeks, just take it off and cut it to final shape before upholstering. I'm sure there are a few more steps that would be involved, like drying for instance. Like any other plan, this looks good on paper but the actual execution is almost certainly more difficult. Just an idea though.... Mike
  10. My policy about cracking jokes about the misfortune of others has always been that if they get up and say they're okay after an accident, it's game on. If they stay down and are obviously not okay, then I'm usually the first one to administer first aid (Once the stiches are in and the bleeding has stopped, again it's pretty much fair game). Being that it's the host of Pinks though, I think all those rules are not applicable. It's ALWAYS fair game to make fun of his misfortune, even more so when he is showing his true inner a$$-clown by screwing up while trying show off. Mike
  11. I would tend to think that the flow seperation point would move futher up the hatch towards the top as speed increases. The air rushing over the car would have less time to displace downwards over the sloping hatch. Following this line of thinking, having the vortex generators located near the top of the hatch would effectively provide coverage for most of the speed range by promoting airflow over the hatch at an early point. The vortex generators coupled with a whale tail set at a moderate angle would probably be very effective at producing downforce, with minimal impact on drag. For my car, I've been seriously considering the vortex generators coupled with an aluminum Cobra Daytona Coupe style spoiler like the one I made for the "Pinks!" car. At the current pace, this will be completed sometime in 2012..... Mike
  12. Damn! Sorry to hear about the jaw. Count me in as +1 for titanium teeth. You could even have grooves machined into them for use as wire strippers.... Hopefully the surgery goes well and you don't end up with a jaw that goes "Click, Click, Click" every time you chew or yawn. Mine does that, and it was really annoying to hear inside my head until I got used to it after a few years. The wife still gets grossed out by it Get well soon man, Mike
  13. They are. I'm from Arizona, and living here against my will
  14. Living in California, and driving on the freeways out here every day has promted me to seriously consider what I would do if shot at, and have contingencies in place for such an event. I don't make it a habit to intentionally piss people off on the road, but it does happen. Freeway shootings happen just about every week out here, and just about every day I see people driving like lunatics because of road rage. California is kind of known for it's gun laws, so carrying one in the car is not really an option. Even if I could, the legal system in this state seems more likely to favor the criminal in cases of injury or murder in self defense. The freeway is also not really the best place to engage in gunplay due to the large number of innocent bystanders. In large part, this is what motivated me to ditch my Mitsubishi Eclipse and buy a Cherokee. Unless the person shooting at me gets really lucky with the first few shots, I have a pretty good chance of knocking him off the road, or into a median, retaining wall, etc. He'll only have one hand on the wheel, so good luck with that spin recovery, buddy. An accident of that nature would require police to show up at the scene, so theres a pretty good chance they might discover the weapon and arrest the guy. As long as it's only he and his car that gets crunched, I'd most likely just keep on driving. On a crowded roadway though, this reaction would require a lot of discretion. If it would be too dangerous to other cars, I'd probably just back way off and let him drive on ahead while I take down his license number. I'd probably follow them home as well if at all possible, just to ensure an option for retribution later on if the police fail to act Mike
  15. Situations like this is when it pays off to have a large, cheap, gas guzzling truck with big bumpers. When the shooting starts, run them off the road and keep driving. Go home, patch up the bullet holes with bondo, prime with rattle can (Multi color if possible). A .45 pistol is no match for 4000+ pounds of rolling steel and a total disregard for safety and human life Mike
  16. Something similar to the JTR setback plates should work. Measure the distance from the rear of the block to the rearmost mounting hole for the motor mount. Compare this dimension with a 350 block (17" from the center on the rear motor mount hole to the rear of block). The difference between the two is the amount that will need to be added to the setback plates to put your engine in the same setback as an SBC. This would make the setback plates very long potentially. Longer plates would be more prone to getting twisted up by engine torque, so keeping it at a moderate torque level would be a consideration. For durability, I'd say go with the crossmember style motor mount. The oil pan shouldn't be much to worry about as it will be almost a full foot or more behind the factory front cross member. As long as you install the new motor mount cross member in such a way to clear the pan, it shouldn't be an issue. Hope this helps, Mike
  17. Looks like Eddie Van Halen has been recording some new solo stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpACZS0vSO4 Is it just me, or is he starting to look a lot like Iggy Pop lately?
  18. Awesome..... I can't wait for G3 to do another tour. Maybe someday they'll be able to talk EVH into going on tour with them. Speaking of EVH, look at this train wreck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX9qcggRo18 Yes, it's David Lee Roth..... I think I remember reading in the bible somewhere that this is one of the signs of the Apocalypse. Mike
  19. Awesome guitars Memegtr. How did you get those signed? I'd love to get one of mine signed, but the thought of dragging one to a concert just scares me. Ebay sells waterslide decals of artist signatures, but that would be really lame. Of course... it is a fake Satriani model guitar, What would fit it better than a fake sig? Z-Rex, I can't see the pics of your's at all for some reason. The link doesn't work for me. Mike
  20. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO71Ei23wJg Probably one of my favorite compositions of all time. If you listen to it while driving, for some reason you end up going really fast.... For something with a quirky 70's/Weird Al vibe, these guys are just nuts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN-DUPF_PuY As a bonus, they actually do guitar solos, unlike 99% of newer rock bands. Mike
  21. I've had decent luck finding parts at both. Ecology seems to be the more pricey of the two, but normally has more old Z cars on hand. Pick a Part almost always has women working the cash registers. I'm not saying all women are stupid about car parts, but the ones at that junk yard are kind of oblivious as far as parts ID goes. I'm not saying you can take a windshield up to the check out window, and while holding it in plain sight say: "Door Handle....", but there is a certain amount of bull$hiting you can get away with. I'm not really doing much next weekend, so if you want the "Platinum Package Tour" of San Diegos finest junkyards I'll be more than happy to show you around. Mike
  22. For a guy that doesn't really play that well, I seem to have quite a few guitars. I'm begining to realize why my wife frowns so much when she catches me looking at guitars on Ebay..... Left to right: Hohner "The Jack" Steinberger style guitar. Very cool, but heavy despite it's small size. Ibanez S470DX. Latest aquisition from Ebay. Tremelo busted up, waiting for parts. "Chibanez" Satriani copy Peavy Wolfgang. Awesome guitar. Ed (Van Halen) was silly to drop Peavy..... "Chibanez" Satriani copy V2.0 (My favorite for the moment) OLP MM1. Copy of Ernie Ball Music Man (Another EVH signature model) Crappy paintjob was how I got it from Ebay. Looks much worse close up. On the floor: "Chibanez" Satriani copy V3.0. An even cheaper copy than the previous 2. Required major resculpting of the body to look decent. This one will probably get the SU-27 splinter camouflage paint scheme. Ibanez RG 7 string. Given to me by a buddy. Cracked neck, no electronics. Painted with black krinkle finish paint.
  23. Nice Wolfgang. I have one of the early archtop versions of those, in retrospect I should have waited for the special version to come out. Cheaper, and to my ears they sound a little better. That sucks that Eddie's signature is rubbing off like that on yours. Might have to get him to redo it, then follow up with 5 or 6 coats of clearcoat Mike
