first thing you need to know is that a set of IRON EAGLE OR PRO LIGHTNING HEADS WILL PRODUCE MORE POWER CHEAPER THAN PORTED CHEVY HEADS, AND THAT DAVID IS AN EXPERT PORTER whos head work is something your not likely to duplicate!and that a set of chevy heads are VERY EASY TO RUIN IF YOU ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT WHAT YOUR DOING! by the time you buy a good die grinder, carbide bits, new valves, sears, guides, springs, retainers, oil seals, and do all the necessary machine work those seemingly cheaper chevy heads will cost waaaaayyyyy more $$$ than the aftermarket heads and work less effectively too! yes that #6 engine will be very streetable and makes less than 450hp N/A (but use the better aftermarket heads they will work far better)and notice that engine has big dollar $$$$$ forged rods and pistons and crankshaft that he bought used at a swap meet!(if you bought those parts new they would cost about $2700) http://www.procylinderheads.com/223260035A.htm http://www.dartheads.com/sbiron215.htm if you insist on spending more money for less hp and takeing a chance of ruining a set of chevy heads, this place has ALL THE TOOLS ETC. http://www.goodson.com/ the # 4 engine will need to run the CRANE#113801 cam to work with the nitrious and be limmited to a 125hp-175hp nitrous max because of the crank, rods, pistons it uses and even thats pushing things!

Horsepower reality check,.. Grumpy?
grumpyvette replied to John Scott's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
ok first things first, remember its very hard to exceed 1.3 hp per cubic inch of displacement N/A so build bigger if in doubt, and everything should match the ONE rpm range that you want the engine to operate the most efficiently at. next theres a trade off of static and dynamic compression ratios to rpm potential, play with these formulas/programs and see what I mean. http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/DynamicCR.html this one has a GREAT DYNAMIC CPR calculator program software for FREE! http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/crc.htm heres one for static compression ratios your aproximate hp potential from cylinder head flow with the formula (.257 x flow at max cam lift x 8= hp potential) but the formula figures, your building an engine where the heads are the restrictive part in the airflow while in most cases the intake, headers, carb, cam or exhaust system is really the restriction. you ask me not to name manufactures but, as a general guide you need 255cfm port flow for 450hp 275cfm port flow for 500hp 310cfm port flow for 550hp and your correct your not getting 600hp without power adders or special heads or going above 350-383 cid (remember every head needs a pocket port clean-up to flow correctly ,no heads work great out of the box) good heads for 450 hp sportsmanII IRON EAGLE 215cc pro LIGHTNING 215cc trickflow 23deg std for 500hp world products 220cc motown 195 cc afr 195cc canfields trickflow 23 deg ® heads for 550 hp 210cc ported AFR 223cc PORTED CANFEILDS 230cc PORTED DART PRO 1 examples http://www.ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos.html 450hp #10,#19,#20,,#44,103,#92#14,#15 500hp #71,#17,#93,#102 550hp http://www.shafiroff.com/ultrastreet.html http://www.gochampion.com/sbcengdm.htm -

head carb cam matching question on a 383
grumpyvette replied to 383 240z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
this cam http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/DisplayCatalogCard.asp?PN=119661&B1=Display+Card is an excellent hydralic roller cam for HOT STREET STRIP use in a 350-400cid engine, but be aware that you can,t run it with stock un-machined chevy heads without running into serious coil bind and piston to valve clearance problems on most chevy heads and each combo is differant so no one cam fits all or even most combos, and you need a .600 valve lift clearance to coil bind MINIMUM to run this with 1.5 ratio rockers .650 with 1.6 ratio rockers while still maintaining a .100 intake /.125 exhaust to piston clearance. -
Grumpy, Info on my build.....
grumpyvette replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
sorry for the delay my mother-in-law had a stroke this week and things have been busy around here. I think this is what your looking for, It what I personally would run in a street car like yours MIKELLY http://dab7.cranecams.com/SpecCard/DisplayCatalogCard.asp?PN=119661&B1=Display+Card and yes you can make 500hp with this cam if everything is correctly tuned, Im useing it in one of my 383cid engines, in a 2.87 rear gear/700r4 vette I own now thats even heavier -
heres your basic no frills 350 v-8 new, http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=prod_detail&catid=128&pid=110 add a few more parts and brackets... heres a trans http://store.summitracing.com (part#) BMM-113001 add the trans and all the driveshaft, engine mount, trans mounts, console work, new radiator, exhaust system , swap kit and various other B.S. and the running car can be built for about $3000-$4000 includeing the engine if you do the work, but you better know what your doing or the cost of other people doing the work boosts the cost to that $5000 or more your DADs talking about. Ive bought complete engine transmission package deals from salvage yards wrecks for $900 out of 1985-1986 vettes and done this swap (sold the TPI system and used the $$$ to get a carb and intake)from start to finish for about $3200 so it is possiable IF YOUR GOOD AT THIS STUFF! do you have a good place to work, tools, engine lifts, knowledgeable friends to help and $3200 to start????

the IRON EAGLE 215cc heads flow better than the 200cc heads if your looking to get the most for your money. the cam you pick will depend on the main use for the car and the intake that matches it and how much compression and lope at idle you want among other things, if your looking for only 365hp a performer RPM intake (used they go for around $60 so look around at swap chevy meets, DON,T GET A REGULAR PERFORMER INTAKE, it will strangle the engines airflow) and a CRANE #113821 hydrolic cam (normally I would choose a solid but a hydrolic meets your lower hp goals and mechanical skill level just fine)will get you to about,365hp/387 tq (right were you said you want to be! and a solid cam swap later will get you more hp if you choose to at a later date! btw a CRANE #114681 solid cam and a victor jr intake will boost you to about 430hp/410ftlbs at the expense of a much lopeier idle, and moveing your torque curve about 1000rpm higher but thats not what you asked for!
-
its not the crankshaft stroke its the small bore that hurts the 305s breathing, and you better think along the lines of 350 hp as a max level to shoot for in a 305 engine, yes more is possiable but above 350hp the costs go up much faster than the hp. short answer, keep looking or if it was me Id also be looking for a 500 caddy engine, they are normally available for under $300 and getting 400hp and 450 ft lbs of torque is cheap and easy, the distributor is in the front of the engine so the engine that weighs just 50-60lbs more than a 350 chevy can be set back right to the firewall.

read this carefully, look at the oil pump stub drive, and computer ignition systems are available that have magnetic pickups on the damper too control spark timeing. http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/ar99928.htm

Solid or Hydraulic lifters?
grumpyvette replied to utvolman99's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
DITTO pparaska if your not running EFI with a knock sensor, that the solid lifters will drive crazy, the solid lifters are great. If you don,t mind the slight ticking noise at idle(which I like but everyones got their own opinion of course) the solid lifters have the advantage of giveing you about 1000rpm more before you get into valve float territory and in most cases only need adjustment every 3-4 months , (if your not checking things at least that often you probably need a differant hobby anyway) that 1000 extra rpm can in some cases be a big help in your power curve too. most people that like fast cars ENJOY SETTING the LIFTERS lash settings anyway the only advantage I see to hydrolic lifters is little or no lash maintance adjustments after the first week or so. -
here HOLLEY MAKES LOTS OF GOOD EFI INTAKES http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/AMS/AMSM/9901-101-1.html http://www.fuelinjection.com/holley.html THE NEW STEALTH RAM HAS THEM ALL BEAT THOUGH look 1/2 way down this site http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/WhatsNew/WhatsNew.html The 91504201 is a complete MPFI kit. Comes with Upper, Lower, Rails, Regulator, 30 lb/hr injectors, 58 mm billet TB, IAC adapter, IAC, All sensors, Harness, ECU, Software, 255 LPH fuel pump, pretty much everything you need to install a complete MPFI system. The 81504001 comes with everything mentioned above except ECU, harness, and fuel pump. The ports as cast are very close to a 1205 gasket (which is the recommended gasket). I think you can open them up to a 1206 no problem
