  1. Thanks, I will call them sometime to see what they can do. I'm not exactly sure that a full-manual valve body is a good thing. Internet research suggests you could miss a shift & hurt your trans, but that goes for a manual shift trans too. This applid mainly to the early Mopar torqueflites. The reason I thought the manual valve body would be cool is because B&M makes (or used to) an H-gated shifter for autos (Ford AOD?) It might not be too good in a cruising Z with an O/D trans because you're not supposed to shift with the lockup on either. thx
  2. Can you tell me some more about the Level 10 people first? I browsed the website (http://www.levelten.com) and it looks like they only have torque converters & transmissions. thx
  3. I see a lot of hotrods with ratchet shifters lately, so I'm just wondering if it's possible to convert the 4N71B (Maxima trans) to a manual shift/valve body? thx
  4. I'm having trouble locating one locally. Do you suppose you can mail-order one from somewhere? thx
  5. So here's my shopping lis: -------1983 Maxima------- 4N71B trans (L or E model?) flywheel, torque converter, trans support & driveshaft from same car I read somewhere that other cars used the same trans (like an '88 Conquest and maybe Starion?) Would that trans be the L or E model (L for hydraulic lockup, E for electronic lockup)? Also they're going to want to know what body style & engine type for the Maxima. ex: 2door coupe with 3L I-6 gas N/A engine Anything else I need to know when I call the dismantlers? thx P.S. I made a 300 mile run recently, and at 80 MPH, my stock 280Z spins 3800 RPM; 4000 RPM gives 85 MPH, and 4200 gives 90MPH. Not that I was going that fast for any length of time.
  6. This is the 4spd auto trans from an '83 Maxima?
  7. I don't quite understand what that means, can you explain? Maybe a quick schematic? Do you mean that the trans handles the O/D? I thought you could hook up a switch to engage it when you want it. thx
  8. Has anybody done the Maxima 4NBL trans swap into a 280Z? (Overdrive & lockup torque converter) I'm ready to do mine and I just want to confirm the details: '83 Maxima 4NBL trans (with O/D & electric lockup) '83 Maxima driveshaft & trans support What speedo gear is used with the R-180 diff, and are there any details on how to do the wiring for the lockup torque converter? thx.
  9. I noticedthat the rubber boots go bad(dry out) after only a few months... Is that right? Maybe they should be made of silicone stuff?
  10. Vacuum switches were used with the a/c system to increase the idle, switch the vacuum circuits around and maybe some other stuff. Mine are all disconnected and I don't notice any difference.
  11. You must be talking about the ZXs, which have a talking thing instead of a buzzer or dinger. IMO, those don't belong on an S30 car. Even a dinger seems wrong IMO. I got a buzzer thing from NAPA. It's just a 12V buzzer, like you can buy from Radio Shack, with alligator clips on the ends of the wires. You're supposed to clip it into your fusebox, but on a 280Z the light fuses are all hot all the time, and so are many other fuses, so you will have to hook it into the headlight switch connetor & ignition switch someplace. thx
  12. "Any" chevy dealer, or just ones that are friendly to people with older cars. I've seen some units on eBay that I think are the same thing, but I can't tell from the dinky picure you see. They were from $10 to $30. thx, that looks great
  13. I don't see why it wouldn't either. I just have no idea what they are or how they hook in.Personally, If it buzzes as soon as you turn off the ignition, I'd be happy. I prefer to turning off the lights before opening the door. thx
  14. Anybody know of a gizmo you can hook up to 280Z that will buzz (or ding) if you forget to turn off the lights? Either a little box or a scematic would be fine for me- I can make up my own PCBs. eBay has some kits for older muscle cars, would those work? I don't know what is in those kits. thx
  15. It almost makes you want to spend the $500 on a new unit from Accel with the breakerless system. It should last the life of the car.
  16. I usually keep the last few catalogs. Most of the stuff is stil there, but the prices are going up.
  17. MSA is closed for a couple days to take inventory
  18. Here are a couple links to the ZX distributor rebuild. Second one has pictures. http://www.jrdemers.com/280ZX/distributor/distributor.html http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/distributorrebuild/index.html
  19. Actually, VB has neither. According to the new catalog, there is only parts for the ZX distributor, and the MT distributor for the 78 280Z. I could buy a whole reman distributor for a 78, but I can't tell if it's for the Auto trans or Manual. NAPA??? How would anybody know which is the correct one for MY engine? And for the same reason, you can't just get one from "any" Nissan dizzy.
  20. I need a vacuum advance unit to rebuild the distributor in my 78 280Z. MSA doesn't have any, neither does Coutesy Nissan. A substitute would be OK, and so would a compatible distributor. I was told you can use one from a 89-83 ZX with some rewiring.
  21. From the bare metal on the frame rail, I can verify that the crazy rubbing/scrubbing sound from the left-front tire, when turning full right, is from the tire rubbing. I think that stopper might help tho. I could get it on without taking the steering boots off. Should it be strong enough against power steering? thx
  22. After the Mustang power steering went in on my 280Z, the frt. Rt. tire hits the frame rail when you turn hard right. The body shop guy said to just grind the flat flange where the tire rubs, so it doesn't rub. I'd rather put on a clamp or stop on the steering rack to limit travel. The rim is OEM 280ZX and the tire is a little taller, but didn't hit before the power steering was on. Ideas? thx
  23. I usually use a heat gun on regular undercoating. Heat it until it 'melts,' then it scraps off with a sharpened stick or putty knife. Some mineral spirits to was hoff what left.
  24. I will have to get a pair. As long as I can mount the driving lights to the bumper for now. My front is the Blue Ray (Alpha) moulding ( I think)
  25. Larry, Did you get your driving lamps yet? I was thinking about getting some to put on the car for the time being, because I do some touring with the local Z club. The lights you get from any local store don't seem to fit right, with the roundish shape of the socket in the nose.
