  1. In my area (Ohio) all they do is sit in the seat and drive on the drums @35 MPH. If the guy tried to get under the dash, I would stop him and ask for specifics. There is NO reason they should be fooling around under there. Except maybe to hook up a code checker, which doesn't change anything? thx
  2. This topic came up somewhere else, so I thought I'd look back into this... Are there any details about how to do the electronic lock-up converters with a toggle switch? thx
  3. Since MSA and datsunrestore were mentioned, I will assume that oem-style wiring was the point. thx
  4. All the suspension parts I've redone were coated in satin clear polyurethane. Why bother with glass, because road grime, sand/dirt will distress/degloss the finish anyway. The natural color of the steel looks better to me than any color paint. YOu can see things better too. IMO, to me, paint is just a way to cover up something you don't want to see. thx
  5. From theory, you want the PCV to go to the intake, to reduce pressure inside the engine. Theory tells us the (vacuum or low pressuire) will decrease air resistance, and you will get more RPMs, just like a vaccuum cleaner when you plug the hose. thx
  6. Unlewss you can get it made for your somewhere, your ONLY bet is to get one from a donor car. I even wondered if or where they got any wiring for the so-called 'factory restored' 240Zs. Otherwise, I had read of some people who tried to find a source for the original connectors, eve, with no luck. Either nobody knows about that, or the parts or manufacturer have disappeared. Let us know if you have any luck! thx
  7. I'm glad you guys were having fun killing your 'snakes.' Along with it, no fighting like the rice will do. I had an encounter with a '67 Mach 1 coming out of a cruise-in, and we both hit the gas when the light changed. Mine being the stock L28 and Auto trans didn't look up or anything, but _I_DO_ have the RPM and cornering advantage! LOL The other guy was a buddy from high school I havent seen in 22 years, so we were just out for fun. In ANY case, I will guarantee you that -I- have the trophy in regards to "the cool factor" against any other car! LOL I'd rather be a lady "killer," too thx & be casual out there-- too much road rage.
  8. You can either use media blasting for the underside,or a heatgun and scraping. Not sand for the media- use something safer, like plastic.
  9. I'm probably going to take the centre console out of my car, and maybe store it to reinstall for shows. Instead, I think I would like to mount a fire extinguisher in its place ( using the three screws that hold the console down). Not that I think I will be using it!! lol I would make an aluminum plate with strap to hold the fire extinguisher. What should I get? 5BCF, right? Do they still make Halon units big enough for a car? I found a website to a place that makes a water-base unit. Summit Racing is about 45 min from me, and Harbor freight, Home Depot are closeby. thx
  10. well, alcohol is used an octane booster, and pure heptane is the standard for 100 Octane ( according to Discovery Channel). You just gotta figure out how much to add.
  11. All i think I will need is the engine harness, I've been testing the sensors & stuff and they are good or get replaced. The only thing left is the wiring, and I really don't want to fool with any splicing as that kind of thing gives me nightmares. I'd rather wrestle with pulling a whole harness and swapping it into my car than splicing one injector connector. I think I will be OK for a while tho. thx
  12. Why not just get yourself a nice, clean new copy? I'm sure everybody would be happy to share any notes jotted inside their copy.
  13. Did you consider mounting them closer to you? I have seen some older cars with the Talbots on the fender just a little ahead of where the access doors are on the fender. IMO, anywhere forward of that, and you'll need 20/20+ vision to look through them. And if it's raining, you won't see didly. I was even thinking of substituting 3 inch convex mirrors for the flat ones. thx
  14. Either needs a Chromed radiator or some kind of grille.
  15. TomoHawk

    pcv valve??

Mine ha a tube going from the valve cover to the throttle body. No PCV valve, AFAIK, correct (for 78 280Z)?Sometimes the guy at the AutoZone "reminds" me to replace mine, and I don't want to argue that my car has none.
  16. Higuys, Springtime around the corner and I'm thinking of stuff to do to get ready to show off my Z. When you went to the MSA show, did they have printed rules or Internet stuf you can red, like class rules & stuff? I'm trying to read about as many different sets of rules, to see where I want to go with any mods or rebuilds/replacements, so you don't get clobbered with deductions for stuff you didn't really know about- like my Mustang power steering ( which I am legally required to have on my cars). I have the judging rules for AACA (antique auto Assoc.), ZCCA, and a local thing. If you can post a link to some judging rules, I'd appreciate it. thx!
  17. Is that you Larry? Wow... I was just thinkin' where you were, and I have some photos to send to you to make you feel bad... .TomoHawk. (Cleveland, OH)
  18. This might be some good news if you are tired of the old brittle Nissan wiring. The Jaguar XJ6 uses the same Bosch L-Jetronic ECU as the 280Z cars have. I'm still trying to look into this, but there either isn't much information you can get online, or the people you ask just wimp out and say, "I'm not a Nissan expert, so I won't recommend it." What I wanted to do was to get a cheapo engine wiring harness ( eBay had one for US$ 20) for a 88-94 XJ6 (website I saw had a 4.2L) which includes the connectors for the AFM, thermotime, temp switch & sensor, etc. That price sounds goods enough to absorb if the idea won't work, but if it does.... it means you have a new engine harness wih good clean non-brittle connectors. Most important to me is the Injector harness. My wires are hard and coiled in funny ways, and I wanted to straighten them to take all the slack out and look better, not to mention the newer connectors. Any opinions? Right now I could really use a reference to a "friendly" JY that has Jag parts. thx
  19. Higuys, I'm back to working inside the car... I would like to know if there is an AUTO trans shifter from an American car/transmission that would be close to the oem shifter on the 280Z? It wouldn't have to be an exact fit, but close enough, because I figure that you'd only have to adjust the length of the lever for the amount of movement (in degrees) that the Jatco trans uses to shift gears, and maybe a new gate plate (the side-thing with the notches). I'm really tired of the old stocky oem shifter with the tacky T-handle. thx
  20. This is the one I got. It's been on since Nov. 2003. I like it, except that you have to turn the engine off and take the key out of the ignition to unlock the wheel, but I usually don't unlock the wheel while I'm driving! LOL http://www.grantproducts.com/grant.fm$retrieve?seqnum=125050&html=grantdetail thx
  21. I need to get a new AFM foir my 280Z, and I dunno which unit is on there because the numbers on the sticker are worn clean off. How do I know which one to order? thx
  22. After looking at a few pics of 78 Caprice on the 'net, it looks like they used 'lift-up' style door handles. I was hoping for pushbutton handles like from an MGA trunklid. thx
  23. Can you elaborate on exactly which locks you used on where? I was just wondering if there is a door handle with a trigger-like thing to it, along with a key mechanism. I'm STILL looking for just the right thing to use on the doors. The Honda lock cylinder still doesn't hit me right (as a Ferrari-style door handle). thx
  24. Besides a different engine, you'd need lighter unibody/frame, suspension, etc. About 800 lbs, right? The 280Z has more steel in the unibody for safety, strength & durability, plus since it's a 'luxury' car, more stuff inside and undernerneath for smoother ride, acessories, etc.
  25. I like the "minimalist" approach. I like the open space which feels more sporty to me, and it's nicer when you drive a long way. I'm lightening the car by taking off all the heavy stuff that doesn't need to be there, like a/c. Then I cut the console off just behind the switches & I'll put the fire extinguisher where that was (still need a place for the change holder, for toll-booth money). I've already modified the rear deck to flip up for storage, and cut a hole for the full-size spare (only 'heavy' thing in the car). Also removing certain things from the top of the L28 engine that it doesn't really need (EGR doesn't work any way) Just need to retune the computer or AFM for the correct mix. I like to have room for working under the hood, room for airflow, and looks cleaner, too. I'll probably redo the carpets in the end, with vinyl over the hump and carpet for your feet.
