  1. Yeah I know that they should be as close to the heads as possible but I want to make sure that they were even on both sides. I dont have a mount for a O2 in the stock manifold and the header didnt have one either. So I have them mounted about 1 1/2 feet from the heads. This is so that they are easier to check also. They are still close enough to take an accurate reading. Guy
  2. Well heres whats going on now.... I have my idle down to about 900-1000rpms. I checked to see that the vaccum port on the side of the throttle body was plugged and it is. I think I that my throttle plates are actually sticking because when ever I have the engine off and pull on the throttle it kind of sticks right off the closed position? My biggest problem is that it seems to still run rough under 2500rpms but there are no codes present? I did a fuel injector flush on friday but I didnt get a chance to put in on the scanner at work. I would think that if it were misfiring that there would be a code or 2.......right? Oh and the O2's are mounted the exact same distance from the heads on both sides. They are not mounted it the header or manifold. So I dont think that is the problem. I have to pull my crappy header off the passenger side again because it is leaking out of the gasket area! I really need to get some nice header that dont leak cause this is causing me quite the headache! Anybody want to give me the $800-$1000 for set of custom coated headers? I really need to get this stuff taken care of so that I can finish the car. The guy that ported my heads and intake wants to use my car for his websites promotion in the "project cars" section! I dont want to send him pictures without it all painted up though! I was really excited to get that email! 8) Guy
  3. When my step-dad painted is airplane this winter he used a few products to prep the aluminum for paint. First he stripped it down to bare metal.... then he soaped up up an washed it down really good.... then he used and etching solution... then he used another product to put some kind of coat on before primering it(I cant remember what it was though?) then he used a nonsanding primer waited for the primer to set up and then painted it My step-dad painted airplanes for 10 years before he quit to be an aircraft inspector. I dont know if this helps but Im sure if you went to a automotive paint store they could help you no problem! Guy
  4. Glad to here you figured it out! I have to pull my tranny because my rear main seal is leaking I am going to pull it with the motor in the car though. I dont think it will be too hard. With the MSA mounts there is some room to move around behind the motor and the firewall. Guy
  5. Well I think I fixed my code 22(TPS Signal too low). I enlongated the holes on the TPS sensor so that at closed it would read .350 Volts instead of the .090 volts that it was reading. So far so good, no engine light is on but I cant go for a drive because its raining like a son of a gun here. I might be able to drive it tommorow but I think is going to rain all day Hopefully this will fix my code 44 and 65 too! My idle also came down but I need to clean my throttle body because it is sticking at the closed position. I spilled a little coolant in it when I took off the thermostat cover last week when I was dicking around with my temp sensor. I think thats why its sticking. Guy
  6. I know what you mean Phantom... I just got my LT1 280ZX on the road and I havent seen much for cars to "race". I dont have my engine or clutch broke in yet so Im not too mad about it but when they are broke in I want some competition! LOL... I had a Cavalier Z24(new body style) with a "ram air" intake on it, try to race me on Monday. It was very funny, I pulled up at a stop light and this rice'a rony cavalier pulls up and he looks over at me and I look back...light turns green and he takes off... I easy into the clutch so that I dont do a massive burn out or fry my clutch, but still give it enough to stay even with him.....then I hit second and just pass him like he wasnt even there!...then I hit third and start to slow down because I had already pulled 5-6 car lengths on him and I knew that the "race" was over.....but he does the typical ricer thing and goes flying by me like we are still racing! Yeah so he is weaving in and out of traffic like we are racing but I'm not! I was already doing 45mph in a 35mph at the time he went flying by and I didnt really care to prove myself any more! I already knew that I smoke his ass with out even trying. I dont think I ever even went past half throttle! LOL What a joke! I cant wait to line up to something worth lining up against! Like a Z06! That should be interesting. Guy
  7. Well I went out and pulled the plugs and the o2's... The drivers side is deffinetly running rich. The passenger side has me confused...the plugs have a lite carbon deposit on them but the o2 is is white, like its running lean? Could these conditions be caused by my code 22(TPS)? Oh and I also found some more bad news while I was under the car...my rear main seal is leaking! I am 90% sure that is the rear main but I guess it could be the pan. I am going to pull the inspection plate tommorow to see if I can tell which is is. I really hope its just the pan. Yeah right, I know Im going to be dropping that tranny but theres always wish full thinking! Hopefully my $500 clutch/pressure(Center Force Dual Friction) plate is not oil soaked! That would really piss me off! I dont want to have to buy another one. Money doesnt grow on trees you know. I was going to put it on the scanner today but I couldnt find the right cartridge for the SNAP-ON Scan tool. I will try again next week. This idleing at 1500rpms is really annoying. Sometimes it drops down to 1000rpms and thats not soooooo bad but I would like to get it down to about 850rpms. I also think I have a bad left front wheel bearing. Oh well just another thing to fix. So this is what its like to get a Hybridz "tuned and ready to go" LOL Its all part of the fun I guess Guy
  8. Yes I have tested the TPS with a voltmeter like ALLDATA says to but it all comes out fine? When I followed the diagnostic procedure on ALLDATA, it came up with bad TPS or bad connection? I just bought a new TPS and it does the same thing? The connection looks fine and its not shorted to ground? I have to do some work on it tonight cause idleing at 1500rpms is driving me nuts! I forgot about that propane "trick" I really do need to pull the plugs and the O2's to see what they look like. Guy
  9. Well I sealed up that block off plate but it is still idleing too high?! I am not sure which direction to head here? Any ideas? Oh and I am still getting the code 22(TPS) code 44(lean on left bank) and code 65(rich on right bank) Guy
  10. I dont have EGT sensors(exhaust gas temp sensors). My running rough problem was the #6 & #8 cylinder wires but my high idle almost has to be a vaccum leak. I think it might be coming from the spot where the EGR valve was mounted. I only have a block off palte on it and not a gasket. I am going to seal it up tonight to see if it does the trick. Guy
  11. Yeah I saw another 350Z in town today but he didnt see me. I have noticed the same thing about the guys with the older Z's. I guess most new Z owners just dont know what a Datsun is, they just know what a Nissan is. No skin off my back! Guy
  12. Well me and Mat73GNZ think its time to start a regular weekly chat session! We came up with Sundays at 9:00PM Central time. So 7:00 for you west coaster and 10:00 for you east coasters. What do you guys think? Is there a better time? Guy
  13. Well I am not pounding on it all the time but I have brokem loose a few times. I know I should be driving more "normal" but I cant help giving it some gas sometimes ! I am still in the break in process but I did have to show my buddy what she was made of! Dont worry I am still babying it 95% of the time! I just cant wait to have it broke in and ready to go to the track! I have about 200 miles on it so far and I change the oil at 30 miles and I am going to change it again at 500. With the amount of driving I do it wont be long before she's broke in! Guy Yeah I just noticed that I broke 900! I talk too much! LOL
  14. Well after I fixed my running rough problem I took a ride into town. As I drove past the mini-golf park I saw one of my buddies so I stopped in. He has a 1986 Monte Carlo SS with a 350 and 350 tranny. He is running about 350-400 HP(not sure because he hasnt had it on a dyno or at the track). So I say come on lets go for a ride... So we hope in my car and I take him down the road. I was like "are you ready?" and hes like "um yeah I guess" So I stomp it down and burn rubber in 2nd and hit third and by then I was a little squirrly(sp?) You should have seen the look on his face (<----thats his) (<-----thats mine!)LOL it was a priceless moment thats for sure! He was more than impressed. He didnt build his car but he knows his Monte Carlos and he sure loves muscle cars. Then on my way out of town I saw a 350Z at a gas station, so I turned around to stop in to say "Hey". So I pull up and I was like "he man I just wanted to say hi to a fellow Z owner" yeah he kinda gave me a grunt/hey kinda noise. And his buddy gave me a weird look too! It kinda pissed me off. I was just trying to be a nice guy but these 2 punks (they were abot 25ish) thought they were too good for me! Well when they took off out of the gas station he kinda got on it but it wasnt too much of a sight to see. Its a smooth running car but its not scary fast. I was too busy filling up my car to go show him a thing or too! All I know is, if someone stopped to say hi to me just because I am driving the same kind of car as them, Im going to say hi back and not grunt! I'll just have to show him whos boss sometime! Guy
  15. Well I installed the new wires on #6 & #8 cylinders and boy does it run smooth now! However, I still dont know why my idle is up at 1500 rpms. I am going to investigate tommorow with the help of a scanner. Guy
  16. Well I think I might have figured out why its running so rough....I just went out to the garage to check out the spark plugs and when I pulled the #6 and #8 plug wires off and checked them, I noticed that half the insulation on them was gone because they had been touching the manifold! I have those 1200deg protective boots(those metal mesh wire covers) on them but I guess it just got too hot for too long for them to work. I doubt they are supposed to touch the manifold. I guess its off the parts store to get some wires. Then I will see if my codes go away. I dont think it will help code 22(TPS) but maybe 44 (lean exhaust) will! Guy
  17. Yes I have the stock manifold on the drivers side and a header(if thats what you can call it, cause its not much of one thats for sure!) on the passenger side. The header is more like a shinny manifold because its so short and small. I dont think it flows more than the manifold on the other side. Im going to go check the plugs right now, so I'll let you guys know if there are any problems with those. Guy
  18. Ok well about the code 22 TPS low voltage....I went back out and tested it again and it is supposed to read atleast .230 volts/230mV...I am however getting .092 volts/92mV. Is the TPS adjustable? Guy
  19. Ok I tried the water bottle trick but they arent crossfiring. Also I erased the codes and took it for drive tonight...code 22 is back and code 44 is back . I dont understand why my TPS code is there because as far as I can tell it is functioning properly! Guy
  20. I dont have an EGR (eliminated in computer also) and my optispark is new. I am going to try the spray bottle method and check my plugs tommorow to see if any are fouled out. Guy
  21. Oh yeah and I am getting a backfire out the exhause once and a while too. Well when I checked the code out with the diagnostic procedure it says that it is an "intermintant probolem" The TPS signal is normal when I test it with my DVOM(volt meter). Everything seems normal there but the code keeps coming back? What is the firing order on a SBC? I am wondering if I am having a cross firing problem? I have the back 2 (6 and 8 cylinder) passenger side plug wires running right along one another so they could be crossfiring....couldnt they? Guy
  22. No there isnt any special tool as far as I know. Do you have the slave cylinder mounting nuts loose? That will help. I know its kind of a pain the butt to get that thing in there but is should go in with those nuts loose. Thats how I got mine in.
  23. I will check for a vaccum leak. I have 3 codes present. 22(TPS Signal),44 (left bank running lean) and 65(right bank running rich) I am going to see if any of those lead to anything this weekend. I already replace the TPS but the code is still there. I even went through the diagnostic procedure for code 22. Guy
  24. Well as you may know I have my 1980 LT1/T56 280ZX on the road! Now heres the sucky part...it kinda runs on the rough side. I cant seem to get the idle down from 1500 RPMS. I would like it to be around 800-900 if possible? I have the set screw all the way back but it just wont idle down? Could this be caused by the Idle Air Control unit? If so how can I fix it? My car also isnt accelerating as smooth as it should. It is ok after about 2500 RPMS but before that it seems not want to take off. When ever I am not moving and not in gear it runs fine all the way through the RPM band. Could this be tranny related? I am not really sure what to look for with this? Thanks for all the help! Guy
  25. Hey Tim, I think you just like showing off that AWESOME! relay box! 8) LOL I would like to do something like that at some point. Guy
