  1. Lot's of stuff to consider with going to an all aluminum block. Often times the blocks aren't "finished" when you buy them - not sure if Ford is selling them finished or not. If they aren't the machine work could drive you into the poor house. There's also all sorts of expansion issues to worry about. Aluminum GM blocks are supposed to be a real PITA to work with. Not sure it would be worth it to save a few lbs IMO.
  2. Friend has a nasty Mustang. He's been known to get it SIDEWAYS smoking the tires at freeway speeds It had a HUGE ferris wheel styled ATI blower on it, sick! It now has a pair of HUGE turbos on it and will be even faster. We're talking over 1K HP We'll see though, he likes building the cars as much as anything else so as fast as it's built he redoes the thing (sigh). He's working with the guy who's got my intake so I'm hoping maybe he'll have some parts pointers when I need funky things for my cars. Unfortunatly he HATES Japanese cars with a passion. Some people just cannot see past their pregidous (sp?!) which is unfortunate. Personally, I don't want to lose traction at all if I can help it. There are some SERIOUSLY nice aftermarket traction control devices out there that look interesting. Group buys are done for them all the time so if I run into problems I'll consider it. Supposedly my ECU will be capable of doing traction control too with some added hardware so we'll see. That's almost a problem I'd like to have - almnost. For now I'm concentrating on the stuff I can do and afford, big single decision is future but I'm researching it. A ride in a T78 and maybe a drive will help me decide...
  3. Read the specs on this sucker - it's as flexible as a Motec. Seriously, when was th elast time you saw an EFI software package who's datalogging software had a math library?! I can create my own data streams. Say I plug in the front and rear ABS sensors on one side, I can create a math function to log wheel spin I can do the same for clutch slip or anything else if I want to. Still reading but man this thing is incredibly flexible! It's capable of running a 10cylinder engine, if you don't need that many injectors you can turn the drivers off and use those outputs for anything you want! You program the ranges for the inputs so if I can get the tech data I'll be able to datalog fuel pressure, oil pressure, inlet temps before and after the ntercooler - you name it! Lots of spare I/Os both digital and analog. It does internal datalogging up to one megabyte. Cost for me was $1200 which is about what ONE of those silly alphabet soup piggyback things would've cost IF this thing works well I WILL put one in my Z to run the V8. As for injector size - no one is making a smaller side feed injector for this car that I can find. I'm shooting for 500RWHP and maybe as much as 600 at the crank. Depending upon who's calcs you use the 850 (820?) injectors from Blitz are about right at 80% duty cycle. Yeah, I could run the stockers for awhile and jack the fuel pressure up but changing the rail and injectors is supposed to be a PITA. Might as well go to the larger injectors and turn them down until I go single. These are peakhold inkectors so I ought to be able to get VERY good resolution from them. I'm HOPING to find someone overseas who might be able to source them for me for less, I dunno. Blitz 31249 is what they are - I'll need six of them. I've got a nasty Carbon something or other clutch in it now - it's a lightswitch. It's got some chatter but I'm told it will get better as it wears in. It'll hold th epower I'm sure, if not I'll go with a lightweight flywheel and killer clutch. A big single IS in the forecast sometime this Summer I hope. I've found someone local who's done the job and he'll be doing my intercooler too. Pulling the stock turbos off is a 100% PITA that I do NOT wish to "enjoy". He's experienced with the intercooler too and is charging me something like $200 so I'm more than happy to let him do it - will give me some idea as to his work before I do the single too. His car looks great but hasn't been dynoed - we're expecting 500RWHP on pump gas if not more - we'll see. He's got fuel and a FMIC with alphabet soup add-ons so who knows, could be 550 if he's lucky. Race gas allows lots more boost - sick amounts of power. P.S. 10s would be interesting but I'm not really that interested in numbers. I think the Z is a fun car and a great toy but I don't want to turn it into a race car. Something I can drive anytime I want without fear would be great and until I've done the CVs I cannot do that. Out of ANY car I've EVER owned this Z has ridden on more flatbeds than all previus COMBINED! CVs, an alignment, EFI, and then I'll see what to do next. I'd LOVE some CF stuff like door panels Once it's got CVs and is reliable I'll consider taking it to the track but not till then. Alignment is a BIG must righ tnow - 85mph is scary
  4. Just let me know Mike. I won't be doing ANYTHING with the headers for at least two weeks. I've GOT to get on this CV job but have just not had the energy. Might see if a friend of mine who's close will come over and help - having someone to talk to while doing it will make it go much faster! Headers are just sitting and I'll wait until you've had time to test fit before deciding what to do - as I recall ytou've got a header delimma too so this should help everyone out... Heck, worse comes to worse come over and we'll drop my head pipes and try bolting them to MY car for a "real" test...
  5. Yeah, I think they are all LSDs - cheaper too. On top of that it's a viscous LSD and not a clutch type which means no wear parts. The ratios might be more friendly too - I'm not sure. This has been talked about a few times. The hard part is apparently the CV axles for it. I and others would be VERY interested in this. If you use th esearch you'll fnd that a few people have talked about doing something liek this, just like CF parts, but it's not yet ever come to fruition. The 300ZX rear should be stronger than the older ZX stuff as should the axles. Mounting the diff and assembling the axles are the major hurdles...
  6. T56 is heavy but the Tremec 3550 5speed is a PIG! If anything th etwo transmissions weigh close to the same. Personally, I think the Supra transmission has them both beat. 5th gear is 1:1 and 6th is OD - I really like that! Not sure how well that would match up with the Z rear though to be honest. If anyone seriously considers the JZ swap I'll try to find out rear gear, tire height, and OD ratio info for you. I weas pretty sure the 4.6 wasn't as heavy as the 5.0. It IS wider - somewhere hear I took a tape measure to one and posted the dimensions. My friend's shop ALWAYS has one or two sitting in crates or on stands They make lot's of power supercharged etc. but you've got to replace rods and pistons to do it right. Then injectors etc etc. - for th emoney the JZ is a better swap IF it will fit. As for the Shaun Hyland stuff - stay away. My friend's shop has had dealings with them - all of the 4.6 in this area are now loacally assembled. SH has some parts of interest I think but he's high priced and some of his parts have had less than optimum fitperformance. One of the racers up in NY is now sending his stuff down here to be machined and assembled too I believe - I'd have to verify that. My friend wrenchs on 4.6 motors all day long and the new Lightning 5.4s too - this is a good engine and he makes them sing but for the money and trouble I think the JZ makes more sense (shrug). The 4.6 is pretty wide too... Price out a 4.6 built to say 500HP running a blower with rodspistons, port work, etc. Now price out a stock JZ block and turbo kit using a cast manifold from http://directedengineering.com/ HRM! Not sure it owuld fit though
  7. WAY too many irons in the fire I'm afraid (sigh). Talked to a guy today who's going to try and see what's going on with my intake. The guy who's doing the work runs Reichard Racing (sp?!). He's a very good machinist who's work has been highlighted in several mags and at SEMA. His workload has gone WAY up since I turned over my intake to him (sigh). Might be awhile before I get to the headers - were you going with the same sort of options I did? I don't recall what exactly they were but I think I went as big as I could - ports still don't match up to the Edelbrock heads as well as the other companies' headers did I DID port them before having them coated though to remove flash from the welding process. If Mikelly's motor is apart maybe we could test fit mine in his car - Mike? My advice to you would be to at least test fit them roough before having them coated, make any modsdings etc, then have them coatedfinished. Their prices are right, the guywas SUPER nice on the phone with me, VERY flexible, and turned them around pretty quickly. All in all I was pretty happy with them...
  8. Heh, lag? Umm, no. I've already talked to a local guy driving a Greddy T78 kit. He says the lag is as bad as running the stock twins TTC which means both full time. I've not tried that as I'm told it's slower on stock twins but I think I'll be able to live with it. This guy is getting decent boost by 3K RPM and full boost by 4K. Presently I get boost at about 2500RPM but nothing real noticable until just about 4K. At 4K this thing presses you into the seat and takes off! Guy I spoke to was spinning wheels in 4th gear running between 18-20PSI. I figure the lag will be slightly worse than what I'm running now but not super bad. We'll see - I'm not 100% set but I'm close. There is that money thing to consider though *cough* RPS kit is about $4200K+ right? What I'd REALLY like is an SP66 but the $5800K+ pricetag sux! Greddy is listed as $3800 and I can do better than that. I'll consider the RPS but I'm not sure an SP turbo can be put on that manifold. I think their turbos WILL go on a Greddy manifold though. I figure if lag is bad I'll switch to a smaller SP turbo (shrug). We'll see, money is the issue at hand! Once the RX7 is sold I'll be in a better position to do this... P.S. Kalium - you located in Tokyo presently? If so PLEASE drop me a line! I'm looking to pickup some JDM injectors and if you can get them for a reasonable amount and ship them I'd be VERY happy! Don't have part numbers etc. handy but if interested I'll get them. TIA!
  9. Been reading the docs on this sucker. All I can say is WOW ! This puppy is going to ROCK! A bit complicated but it's got lots of nice features. My price for th eSupra unit was $1200 but expect race units to be higher because they will have a harness on them. Depending upon how it works on the Supra this is probably the ECU I'll put on the Z. Features like dual O2s that can be assigned cylinders for per cylinder fueling, dual knock sensors for per cylinder (or bank?) retard, TONS of spare I/Os, programmable trigger levels for "Check Engine" lites, and dual rev limiters - fuel AND spark! The Automapping is way cool. You get to choose how many data samples the ECU must see for a particular map cell before it's allowed to evaluate it for a change, you get to decide the minimum amount that it must change before a change is allowed, AND you get to decide the max amount of change allowed. Wow! Ability to run a stepper motor to control boost, ability to run NOS solenoids, ability to customize "dashboard" settings for monitoring sensors on a laptop, and internal datalogging trigger from an external switch or just logging all the time overwriting itself. I think you can datalog based upon a trigger value from a sensor too Still reading but so far so good. Unfortunatly I've NOT got the hardware in my hot little hands yet. I DID get a MASSIVE Greddy FMIC today though. 4row and damned BIG. Hrm, maybe I'll see if it will fit in the nose of a Z? Not cheap but supposedly worth 30RWHP on a BPU Supra and a MUST for running a big single. Figuring out fueling right now - darned Jap injectors are NOT cheap. Anyone got a source that can help me out? Stony, you're not in Japan right now right? Still got any sources? I'm looking at $160 per injector for 850cc side feed units right now. Ouch!
  10. IMO - go ahead and call them up. They WILL work with you! They sent me my headers unfinished and uncoated for test fitting. However when they came back they had angled the outlets inward towards the block and not straight down. I hadn't told them how I wanted them but I wanted them STRAIGHT. It's possible that this is why they supposedly hit. Will be awhile before I can try them out, am getting work done on the Supra, trying to get the RX7 sold, and still need to do CVs on the Z so I'm pretty busy. (sigh)
  11. Door panels, pant pant Actually the smaller stuff like the flat trim behind the doors ought to be easy to make. Stock it's just vinyl covered cardboard! I've been tempted to try but have too many other things going on to have the time - yet.
  12. Actually in my case the Rewarder's hit on the passenger side. At least that's what the shop claimed. However I'm pretty sure I mocked these up before final welding and coating and that there was no problems with the driver's side for sure. Passenger side I think I checked but am not positive. I intend to set them up again but haven't had time. I've still got to convert to CVs!
  13. I've not had time to post th epics yet but I had a nice chat with some Supra guys running Greddy T78 turbos. On the way to the show the guy said they were fooling aorund some on the highway - pump gas. Top of 3rd he started to lose some traction, shifted into 4th and began burning rubber at 60MPH when the boost came on! He was running 275series tires if I recall correctly - and it's not been dyno tuned either! Boost was set for about 20PSI and he'll run about 8lbs more on race gas. I cannot imagine that kind of power but hope to get there sometime soon. I've ordered a Greddy 4row intercooler, AEM fully programmable PnP ECU, and a catalytic converter (don't ask). This will all go on with my stock twins. As soon as I feel comfortable I'll be ordering up a Greddy T78 myself. First I've got to figure out a fuel solution - Supra vendors want $450+ for a 2foot piece of fuel rail Not sure how I'm going to get around that and find some injectors that don't cost a million bux. Anyway, imagine this drivetrain in a Z. My Supra weighs like 3500lbs, my Z probably 2500lbs. Sick I tell you, just plain sick!
  14. 2 tenths on a car already going 9s? Spraying? Umm duh, I'd expect that. Pick up 2tenths on a 13 second car and I'll be surprised. For me the hassle isn't worth it and I've seen what the Ford dyno runs show - especially for the 4.6 motors. It's not worth the HP for the hassle of install, dragging the headers on speedbumps, frying starters, and problems changing plugs. Did I mention cost? I'd have to really pick up a bunch to be interested in longtubes for my car. As for my second set of headers - these are Rewarder headers. Guys at the exhaust shop now tell me that the PASSENGER side doesn't fit. Grr! They said that it hits the block?! I'm pretty sure I test fit both sides before coating etc. so I'll try them myself in the garage. Very aggravating just to pick up some primary pipe sizing let me tell you. The Flowtechs fit great but th eprimary is small and there's a step from th eexhaust port to the header and I know that's got to be hurting me some. On a brighter note - the additional mufflers really helped. Still resonates some inside the car but the woman says it's MUCH quieter from outside and no backrap when it decells Noticed a little of what looked like gear oil on the garage floor and some oil too so I've got some looking around to do under there. Not sure where the gear oil could've come from since I've got all new seals etc. Weird!
  15. Heh, so far everyone who's said they will do this hasn't come through. If you can do it I'm all for it! I'm interested in CF kickpanels, CF doorpanels, CF console - no switch cutouts and maybe no ashtray hole. A heater control panel and radio surround with no cutouts would also be good - I'll do my own custom controls and radio cutout if I ever get a radio Weight isn't my issue, looks are. There's also a flat piece normally covered in vinyl that's just behind the doors inside the car - would like a set of those. A dash CAP for a 240Z would also be cool but with a semigloss finish. CF glove box door perhaps? Hell, I'd replace all of th eflimsy interior pieces with CF too if I thought it would look decent but that's probably a bit much and a bit too expensive too. Before you goto that sort of trouble I'd make sure there was a real demand. Please let us know if this is doable at all. Door panels in particular interest me I'm willing to pay reasonable prices so please let us know how it goes. Thanks!
  16. LOL, I do lots of readng and sleeping - is why I've not got EFI on my car yet Seriously, things CAN really change in the blink of an eye. Funny thing is one of the biggest things that passes through my mind is who would've taken care of the dogs? This accident would've probably killed me and certainly hurt the woman badly if not killed her too. I've got 4dogs, 3 of whom are "rescues", 2 of which have been through some "really bad things". I'd hate to think of what might have happened to them These little guys are like kids to me and it's upsetting that someone else might not see them that way while clearing out my house. Kripes, I might have to write them into my will! Speaking of which, creating one has taken on a whole new meaning now At the very least I'll try to put my wishes down on paper and have it notarized. Been putting that off for awhile, time to do it! I'd like top think this wasn't a life changing sort of thing but maybe a little life enhancing? That truck passed us close enough to throw some dirt on the car, the least the driver could've done was hit the damned horn! Would love to talk to th eguy and find out what occured...
  17. Hrm, what else is needed to go from carb other than ECU? Throttle cable, throttle body, injectors - anything else aside from air cleaner? I'm considering this over my yet to be converted carb intake Need to call and check on that (sigh). Not cheap but not so bad when you price out the Miniram from TPIS. Think they'll finally drop the price?
  18. No, I'm not kidding around. Call it fate but I came within a hairsbreadth of being killed. We went out to an import shopw today in the Supra. I'd gotten the RX7 up and running earlier but wasn't able to take it with me (battery holddown too short) so we were both in the Supra. Second car back at a busy intersection with a turn lane on my left for oncoming cars to turn. I was having trouble with the lightswitch clutch in the Supra and Deb and I were chatting some about it. Light turns green, car ahead of of me moves forward, I stall the car. Cussing i reach down to restart and look up just in time to see a FULLY LODADED CAR CARRIER careen through the intersection. He had pulled into the turn lane to go around cars stopped for the red and drove right through the intersection, no horn, no lights, just a little swerving as he cut out of the turn lane and through the middle of the intersection. This thing was one of those carriers pulled by a pickup truck. It had at least 4 cars on it and a minivan in tow. The car ahead of me made it through the intersection, the car next to it must have to and there was apparently no car next to me. Had I not staled the car I'd have been T-boned by the F350whatever pulling that thing and all of the other cars on top. Frankly, I do not believe it would've been a survivable accident - that sucker was MOVING and we saw NO sign of braking action. We even went back and looked - no skid marks, and no accident evidence further up the street so I guess he made it. To say that we were shaken up is an understatement It didn't really hit us at that moment but later in the day it sure did. I'm not much for dwelling on things I cannot control but were it not for a simple twist of fate and my having such trouble switching from one car's clutch to another I don't think I'd be typing this. Not sure there's a real lesson to be learned or any way I could've really anticipated this but I can tell you that I sure enjoyed the rest of the day. Lots of what-if's to consider but th ebottom line in my mind was that I got lucky, really lucky. You just never know when you're number is going to come up - today wasn't my day thank goodness. I've got way too many things I want to learn about and accomplish and I'm glad we avoided this. Whew! Anyway, don't mean to ramble but thought I'd share the near miss - it was pretty scary!
  19. Hrm.. Stony I don't suppose you could hook me up with someone who could ship a Greddy T78 single turbo kit "cheap"? I'm looking into it right now - $3k+ in the states. I'm not sure that turbo isn't too big but a local guy claims it's not bad at all. I guess we'll see once I hook up with him and chat - hope to go for a test ride with him. I think I could live with about 500RWHP or so.
  20. Ouch, I'm really not sure what the law is. Chances are good you wouldn't get stopped but... Have you considered switching to the older style bumpers in fiberglass? Motorsport sells them fro a reasonable cost (IMO) and they look pretty good once painted bodycolor or black. Have them on my car if you're in the area and want a peek.
  21. I think you'll find that the stock TPI intake will STRANGLE your motor. You would be better off looking into the new Holley RAM intake that recently came out. It's supposed to be a bit like the TPIS Miniram with an affordable pricetag - but I've honestly not priced them out. Be sure and look at th enew NOS nozzles - they're little sprayers that attach under the fuel injectors for instant port nawz
  22. Hrm, for this swap go 5.0. 4.6 make lot's of power when done "right" but do you really want to replace rods and pistons to get serious power with a blower? Of the two major 4.6 engines the 4valve breathes better but it's MUCH bigger - I've posted measurements in the past. Parts aren't cheap either and they don't have a ton of torque. The DO rev like mad though which is a plus for our cars but not enough to overcome the 5.0 ease of install and parts availability. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do a mod motor at this time. Do the 5.0 or better yet a 351W. If you want to goto the toruble of a modular consider one of the turbo Nissan RB motors or a 2JZGTE Toyota. Probably about the same trouble and a stronger motor to start with.
  23. Not sure., Try asking on Supraforums.com or you might find the answer at mkiv.com which is the BIG FAQ site for the Supra. If nothing you ought to find some good pics of th eengine out of the car...
  24. I second that - get the book and read read read. This really isn't that hard a swap IMO and the JTR mounts work really well. You'll understand this much better once you've read the book. Oh, and th eJTR kit comes unpainted - seriously consider powdercoating everything you get or it WILL rust.
  25. BTW - with regards to the 2JZ swap - there's a single turbo CAST manifold that's MUCH cheaper than the tubular ones. Supposedly it won't flow as much but if you're not looking to make 800RWHP it probably would work well. Dunno if it would fit but it's certainly worth a shot. Also - Greddy makes a T78 turbo kit that I'm considering - could be as cheap as $3k if I'm lucky. We'll see Talking to a guy now local who has one and says that turbo, while big, works great with a stick. Should make 500RWHP on pump gas I think:eek:
