Things that can go wrong with tuning your ms&s-extra: compare this picture with the one in the first post. the A/F ratio in the first is off. This one is better. The logviewer was set to nonlinear air fuel output. But I am using the linear output. Another lesson learned. another thing that went wrong: When seting up your timing. You set the timing (for example) to 20 degrees advance. If the mark on the front pulley is off then adjust the trigger angle. After this was set I forgot to set it back to using the tables. I was driving around with a fixed 20 degrees of advance! I Thought the car didn't feel quite as it should be but I didn't find out what it was for about a 100 miles.

LOL. That's what I keep telling him! This spring he was telling everyone that he would get his car finished in the summer. Yesterday he was telling everyone it will be finished in the winter. But he is a working guy now. so he doesn't have that much time to fool around with cars anymore. If you build a megasquirt and got it working than the techedge is only a small step up in difficulty. I build it myself also.

This weekend I finally finished my new setup and it works great. I have a regular compression f54 block, P90A (non hydraulic) head, Z31 Turbo with a modified downpipe, Saab 9000 Intercooler, 60 mm TB, 370cc injectors with dropping resistors. As a rpm pickup I installed 3 magnets in my flywheel with a hall sensor mounted on the sandwitch plate between the block and trans. The distributor is fixed in place and is now no more than just a distributor. As a start I loaded the moby injection and ignition maps (thanks Moby). After adjusting the req fuel setting it ran just fine. Then I installed my TechEdge WB02 sensor. I am using the WBlin and feeding it into the O2 input of the megasquirt unit. As a bonus I connected the Narrow band simulated output of the Techedge to a dash mounted afr meter. I set the Air/Fuel ratio target map to run about 13:1 on boost and 15:1 when cruising. Then I went for a drive. AMAZING!!!! This thing just goes and goes. The Wideband takes care of the fuel map for now and everything looks great. I am now using the datalogs to adjust the fuel table. If you look to the right of the white line you can see a full throttle acceleration. Boost is set to 7 psi. When the boost comes on you can see a spike of the afr to 10:1. Then the closed loop target afr system start to adjust the mixture to 13:1. It adjust the mixture to about 90%. This tells me I have to adjust my fuel maps about 10% leaner in that area. Great! And all this for a DIY system. I can highly recomend this combination of MS&S-E and the Techedge wideband controller. For a total price of less than $500 you can have a fully programmable fuel and ignition system with closed loop wideband monitoring. That is cheaper that the basic SDS system and you get more stuff to fidle with. I had a bit of a race with a 300zxTT (z32) and after I jumped about two car lengths on him at the start he still couldn't catch up to me. This was at only 7 psi. Granted the owner of the z32 couldn't drive to save his live but still I fully expected for him to catchup to me and it just didn't happen. I'll try to get it dynoed in the near future. Zya

My Alfa romeo 2 liter 4 cylinder twinspark had DOHC and only 8 valves. Can I join this thread aswell?

It's in decent shape and the engine is running strong. At the moment boost pressure is at 5 psi so there is some power to be had there. I already hace blocked off the pop off valve. For the engine I am thinking: FMIC T3 2.5" exhaust MS&S-E Maybe I should just rip out that brown/gray interior and lighten this thing up a bit. at the moment it weights about 1250 kg. thats about 2700 lbs I guess. but first I'll have to get it MOTed and get some decent tires. In the front it is riding on 195/50-15 and in the back 195/65-15 have been fitted. I think I will be going back to the stock size of 195/60-15.

cody, No one is in the car in that picture. The wheels are only turning at something like 5 mph. It was idling in 1nd gear. It is not that light in my workshop so my camera is a bit slow. hence the wheel blur.

I had a Alfa Romeo 164. I replaced the standard knob for an aftermarket one which was a lot heavier. I was pleasantly suprised. It felt a lot smoother to shift and it gave a very solid feel to the linkage system. I guess the weight worked as a stabilizing mass.

A small update: I made a testrun with my daily driver. As I was slowly raising the speed I noticed that at 60 mph the whole thing started to move slightly. So for now I must limit the top speed to 60mph until I have the drum balanced. All in all I am pretty happy with the stability of the system. I actually made a test run with my roaddyno hooked up. This gave me a pretty good graph but the peak numbers are way off. Next step is some more welding and painting and finding a place to balance it.

hi mom, The only thing that I can't make myself is the roller. oh and balancing that monster. the rest is just plain old welding, sawing and grinding. after that there is painting and electronics. nothing special. I will be using a 27 tooth sprocket as a pulse generator. I heared that a dynojet measures rpm with just one pulse per rev. So in theory this thing wil be 27 times more accurate. Here is a picture shamelessly ripped from a other dynamometer site.

cygnusx1: The pillow blocks are rated for 20 metric tons a piece and 3000 rpm. Which is more than enough for this project. The axle goes through the end plates and is welded from the other side ( the end plates are 61,5 mm thick). Also a radius is machined at the outside for added strenght. EvilRufusKay: How portable will it be? actualy I build it with portability in mind. I use a pallet jack which is rated for 1500kg. it is quite easy to move around. olie05: You are right about the surface. At my local poly service they sell a friction coating that is used for swimming pools. Very durable. I am going to paint it first with a 2 part epoxy primer.

lately I have been working on building my own dynamometer. At first it will be a inertia type only (like a dynojet) But with provisions to expand to a brake type dyno. A friend of mine has a great metal work shop (think big/industrial). He made the roller. the outside diameter is 530 mm and about 25 mm thick. It is 2100 mm long. Te roller weighs about 825 kg and has a inerta of 46 Kg.m2. I still have to build the framework and get the rol balanced. For electronics I will be using this: http://www.sportdevices.com/dyno/sp1.htm I'll keep you guys informed. the tire is a 195/60-15 for comparison.

In that case you will have to find something else to put in your car because here in Holland there is a guy running a 240Z with a turbo charged ld28. this guy is a turbo guru and is retired now. But he has a lot of projects going on. One of them was this diesel engine. It has a diesel pump of a six cylinder citroen engine And he adapted it to run on the ld28. As I recall it he has about 175 HP and +400nm. I don't know when I will see this guys car again but I will try to take some pictures.

wow, It's great to see how you modified the car and still be true to the original lines of the car. It just looks a lot beafier (sp?). I was looking at this pic: This might not work as a air intake because the air rushing over the surface of the car will create a low pressure area and thus suck air from the vent. It doesn't matter if the vent is pointing forward or backwards. It would have to be a raised intake, like a scoop, to work as a intake. google "bernoulli" or "venturi" If you want to know what I meen.

at the back of the exhaust system the exhaust gasses are a lot cooler and thus a lot less in volume. So putting the exhaust at the back of the car has a performance advantage because there is less volume of air to go thru the muffler. Please feel free to debate this because I am not a hunderd percent sure. xander

I spoke to an engine builder today and he said that synthetic oil can do that to paint.

Hi, I recently started loosing oilpressure on my rebuild l28et. After removing the oilpan (I though it might be a loose oil pickup tube) I found that the inside of the oilpan that used to be black was now shiny metal. The paint chips where clogging up everything. I never painted the inside of the pan. It was the original nissan paint but still it peeled off. What could cause this to happen? After the first rebuild I used a very cheap 15w40 supermarket oil. I slowly drove the car for 500 km just to setup my megasquirt and to breakin everything nice and slowly. After that I switched to a semi synthetic 10w40.

You don't. They are very rare. at least they are rare here in holland. I was thinking of replacing the complete engine with a suzuki swift gti engine. It is a 1.3 dohc engine of around 90 hp. And it is EFI of course. That should give it some pep and probably better milage also. There is a suprising amount of room in the engine bay. I'll get some pictures when I get the car (within 2 weeks I hope).

I have a 260Z also. It is the most common Z here in holland. When I first went megasquirt I used the original E88 head. I just drilled a couple of extra holes so I could bolt on the injection manifold. You also have to notch the intake port for the injectors. No biggy.

hmmm... i have been running XP on my older pentium II laptop for a couple of months now. No problems whatsoever. I guess newer laptops are not that good at handling the rs232 port.
