  3. Adding a turbo will elevate the fun to a whole other level. It doesn't have to be very expensive either. megasquirt & stuff = $400 (diy autotune?) stock turbo manifold =$50 (ebay?) new turbo = $700 (thagardspeedshop) injectors = $240 (arizonazcar springs to mind) intercooler $150 (ebay) piping/reducers =$ 150 misc= $300 did I forget anything? this puts you at $2000 and over 300 hp. with new parts. I did it a lot cheaper but my car is not as nice as yours so I didn't mind using an old turbo for example. to sum it up: I think you do need a turbo but you don't need 400hp.
  4. what you suggest is possible. I ran my 37 lbs injectors that way. I cut off the plastic of the back end of the injectors to expose the metal underneath. Then you can just slide a hose over the end. Use good hose clamps. In the end I did convert to a palnet fuelrail because one of the injectors started leaking between the plastic and metal inner tube.
  5. make sure that you get 25W resistors and not .25W. 1/4 watts resistors are a lot more common. the 25W resistors are big and are capable of shedding a lot of heat. the look something like this:
  6. this is quoted straight from the megamanual: also it doesn't mater if the resistor is on the plus side or negative side of the injector, as long as there is one resistor per injector. The injectors don't have a positive and negative side either. you can switch the wires and it will work the same. are you building a wiring loom from scratch or are you modifying a original loom. The 280zx origonally came with resitors wired in.
  7. I have one of these. It works very well for the nissan OHC engine when the head is still on the car. When the head is on the workbench it becomes a bit of a hassle but it still works.
  8. Yeah It's not big but at least I won't have to drive for halve an hour to get there . For the people that have never seen my workspace. It's a small shed in the back of my garden and it is about 6x6 feet. Great for buidling engines. not so great for stacking all your spare Z-parts .
  9. this is what I am building right now. It's a 305 out of a '92 van. It had throttlebody injection. Now it has a super hurricane efi manifold and fuelrail made by professional products. the manifold and rail are less than $300. The throttlebody I got of Ebay. You could also use a modified 4 barrel carb to use as a throttlebody.
  10. yeah, I read that too. But I did not have a set of heads and the price was right. Plus I don't mind being the guinea pig. And as I said they did look good to me. no burs or casting flaws. come to think of it, my E88 cylinder head had some burs too. Right at the sparkplug hole. I am building this engine cheap. The intake is a professional products huricane EFI manifold and the SS headers are straight from Ebay. we'll see.
  11. I bought a set a couple of months ago for my 305 build. I have no experience with sbc heads but they look OK. I hope to start the engine somewhere in february. I will let you know how it runs. here are som pics:
  12. fix your alternator charge light. that should help. 12 volt is aplied to the light and the negative side is routed to the alternator. the small current going through the light/alternator is what switches the alternator on. usually though the alternator will switch on by itself when you ref it above a certain rpm. Is the new alternator self regulating? if so you might want to take a look at this site: http://www.zcarcreations.com/howto/voltreg.htm
  13. I ones disected a wiring loom of a z31. The complete wiring loom weighs about 20 lbs!!! thats a lot of coper. I now have a big box of little spools in different lenghts en colors. I build 3 complete megasquirt wiring looms and still have lots left.
  14. wow, I was not aware that this controller exited. This could be the solution for my Z. Do you have any pictures for when I go to the pick'n pull?
  15. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/81-89-300ZX-280ZX-XTD-RACING-CLUTCH-KIT_W0QQitemZ190174926323QQihZ009QQcategoryZ33730QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Am I the only one running this clutch? I like it a lot. A had it behind a 300hp l28et and did a lot of hard launching. It never sliped. The pedal is light and for that price of $130 it is worth a try.
  16. I'm pretty much at the same stage as you. I though about getting a older 750cfm 4 barrel carb and using that as the throttlebody for my efi system (megasquirt). I am dismissed the idea because the 4 barrell has no provisions for a TPS. I am now going to make an elbow from the intake to the throttle body and I will be using a throttle body of a q45. It has a 90 mm throttle plate and has a progressive linkage system. It also has a provision for extra air during cold starts gouverned by your colant temperature. you can actually buy carb style billet throttlebodies but the are very expensive ($400+). they come with TPS and progressive linkage. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=HLY%2D9900%2D171&N=700+4294925239+4294859865+115&autoview=sku
  17. http://www.crxcommunity.com/viewtopic.php?t=10255 honda CR-Z looks good to me. Those seats will probably fit in a S30.
  18. the earlier (1984) fiero's were notorious for going up in flames. The wire loom to the engine would fall onto the back exhaust manifold setting it on fire. the later ones were OK.
  19. check your RPM's at speed and calculate from there. If you are running megasquirt you could datalog a run and get a really accurate rpm reading.

    pop ups

This one had me laughing . Your right, You have to be a real pervert to watch soft porn. normal people watch real hard core.
  21. your enthousiasm is not your problem that is for sure. What you really need to do at this point is calm down. All the questions you have are answered on this website. so read, read, read. My advise to you is fix up the car first. than take a look at your budget. It's no fun to have a non running project car. So get the car fixed first. Concerning your engine choice, maybe you need to learn how to walk first before you start running. An engine swap like the RB means a lot of fabricating. Maybe start out with a decent l28et. Get it running on a standalone EFI system. Get a decent size turbo and exhaust sytstem. And then if you still decide that you want to go RB the turbo, exhaust and efi system are already there to make your live easier. this aproach is a lot easier since you are not able to fabricate stuff. Also when you read the posts here at hybridz you get the idea that everyone has 400+hp engines and I don't doubt that they do. But what you don't read is all the stuff they broke to get there. And 400 hp is a lot for a stock s30. I guestimate that my turbo 260Z put out somewhere between 250 and 300 hp. This was enough to beat a porsche carerra S4 on the highway. And I could keep up with a Lotus Exige S (supercharged). What I'm saying is that you should work up to 400 hp. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it. by all means please do. But keep it sane and try to learn from the mistakes other people made.
  22. We know perfectly well that you are from Holland. Wat you probably don't know (couldn't know) is that a while ago Tony, me, and Frank (to some extend, if he wasn't bussy admiring his ZXR) loaded 6.5 Z's in a big cargo container. This container was shipped to the netherlands. There where 5.5 S30 in there destined for Ad Verkuijlen at VA-Motorsport Engineering. He makes really nice race cars with these chassis. And Frank bought himself a ZXR. That car was like new. PS: Tony, it's Roestvrij not rostfroi. but you are getting there. Be sure to plan an evening for dinner at my house when you are here next time OK.
  23. yep that's a typical dutch Z. Rust, rust, rust but a perfect dash. Where are you located. I might have some stuff for you. xander
