Well, I just have to add my $.02 here... I had the chance to meet Glenn this past weekend, and the Jag V12 in his 240 is quite a creation. For some insane reason, he handed me the keys and said "wana drive?" HA!! My god... I didn't even thrash it (not mine!) but WOW... this thing really goes! And the sound of a V12 winding out is somethin else! My 'But-o-meter' was peged at "DAMN THIS THING PULLS!!" and the grin on my face stayed there for the rest of the day... actually, as I'm thinking about it now, the grin is back! I know the jag V12 a bit big/a bit harder to find parts for, but like Glenn said.. his car is heavy to begin with... and ther's lots of V8's but not many V12 in Z's. And I do agree that there are quite a few Jags around that have electrical/other problems that land them in the junk yard, or in a field somewhere. Cheep source of V12's.....

Hey ppl; I am thining of picking up a used MSD 6AL ignition box, and was wondering if they are all the same box/unit? What I mean is, will it work on my L28 w/280zx dizzy, even if the guy has in in a V8 camaro right now? And is it just a box with some wires comming out of it, or is there someting else I need to make sure I get with it? It's local and the price is right, but I just want to make sure I can use it...
-
Was it instaled in anything since the rebuild or just been sitting? if it hasn't been used since the rebuild, it might be a mistake/misalignment that was made during assembly... did you rebuild it yourself or have a shop do it? you say it's not in park.. does the shifter lever in the side move ok? Mabe something fell off inside, or came loose...

Hey guys just curious.. what is this HEI setup you speak of? I am trying to find info on it, but guess Im not looking inthe right place... is this a 'stand alone' system or just something that works well with the MS FI system?
-
Hmm.. heres a Z spesific Q to anyone running MS in a Z car: What setup are you using for ignition? More to the point, is anyone using MS AND a 'maga jolt' or similar MS compatable ignition control in their Z? I am trying to figure out what I would do with my 280z for the igniton, because my stock 'dual pickup' dizzy and electronics..well, they suck. Id rather have a fully electronic/progamable system... I was looking at MSD or Crane perhaps, but they are lots of $$$ and I'd still have to upgrade to a 280zx dizzy (theres no aftermarket support for the dual pickup dizzy) and figure out how to wire that! Anyone got some info/knowlege?

Now that I think of it, my 280z has dropping resistors already. (looked through my FSM) so I guess this means they are low resistance...guess I'll see if they will work, or I'll have to build a dropping risistor pack like you did. As for ordering from Digi-key, you have to remember I'm in Canada, and will have to pay a little more than you to order from them (damn exchange rate!), and would then have to get it shipped to me as well. ($?$). (I have to order/get the partial kit shipped up to me already) I will look into it, but I am thinking it would be cheaper for ME to get the required parts localy. I also have quite a stash stored up of various resistors, caps, ect. I was in an electronics program (for a year ) in college, and have been tinkering with/taking apart things for years. AND I am a pack-rat. I've got a few boxes just full of electronic parts/STUFF/tools. Between that, and the local parts store, I think I could cut costs...
-
I'v been looking at this MS for a few weeks now... and have to agree that is sounds like a deal.. if you're willing to do a bit of work and figuring out, but I don't mind that part. I love the DIY stuff... andfrom what I can see, there's no one in Canada using it yet... It would be cool to be the first MS running around here! I'm just trying to figure out what it's gona cost me to GET it up here! Looks like I'll be around $250 Canadian by the time I'm done.. I still have to get prices on the TPS, sensors, ect from my local GM dealer..

Ok Moby; Here is something I couln't find out about anywhere but here (I think..) What injectors do I have in my 75 280z? I am trying to figure out if I need the 'flyback board' or something... do I have low or high impedance injectors? (they are OEM) Another thing, I'm looking at the order form and got to thinking.. I could order the 'partial kit' (Programed chip, PCB, ect) and then go to a local elecrtonics store (Radio Shack) and buy the rest of the neccesary caps/resistors/diodes ect. using the parts list on the MS site.. would that be correct? I would worry about differing components though..like different pin locations on transistors and such.. has anyone done this? (I also work in a machine shop, so I can build my own case, and my girlfriend is a computer person already got the laptop and cable.) I have to say, I am impressed and very interested... and got to thinking about other MS projects I could do if this works out for me!

uh, Air Flow Meter. It's a Datsun part that gives ppl trouble sometimes. I was making a joke man. Your Ford T-bird probly doesnt have one. I don't know what to say about the power problem...
-
OK ppl carb or EFI... what's your thought?
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in Fuel Delivery
Well, this will get quite expensive when you consider I need an AFM, tps, water temp sensor, a new distributor anyway (gona go with a 280zx dizzy) and the wiring to my fuel pump has already been butchured once (before I owned it) and the pump runs constantly when the key is on. If I'm gona rip into the electrical to find/fix that problem and others (there are a few 'hack' wiring jobs in this car under hood and inside; taped wires, broken clips, ect) AND buy all new sensors, I'm looking at a lot of time/money and will still have an out of date system that is expensive to fix/maintain. And going to carbs or a mega squirt FI will give me the flexibility to adjust for mods in the future. I should have said this in the first post I supose... but I would like to get a header, do some head/cam work, and maybe turbo it someday. It will be stock for now, but If I want to start adding HP down the road, I need to be able to tune/adjust it to take advantage of any performance add on's I get/build. I would think the stock system would be hard to tune, and would NOT respond well to boost conditions/head work.. I am leaning towards the FI, partially because I like the idea of building stuff, and it would be easily tuneable. (I hate that stupid AFM!) and I do not have a very good knowlege base on carbs.. -
Ok, so you program the main chip, send it to me (along with the rest of the components/caps/resistors/ect) and then I down load new code to it and it will run my ignition system along with the FI? I am curious how this works... Would it run a 280zx dizzy (with the box on the side) or would I need to program it spesifically for that? (or build another control box or something?) BTW I have NO programing skils! I really am interested in this, but don't quite know what I need (stimulator, boards?) I was wondering what sensors I will need as well. I want to start pricing things here to get a rough idea. I hear it's programed to work with GM sensors, and I can probly get them from a local dealer, but need to know what parts to ask for! Thanks alot man. Sorry if this is annoing you!

Here's my deal: I want my car to run well/reliably for street use. I need it to have decent power, and be easily tuned. I may possibly do some late night street racing , but no autocross/drags: it will be a daily driver. My car is a 75 280z and I have a failing EFI system. (AFM is shot, ignition is in trouble) and have (as I see it) two options at this point: 1: I could Buy/build a Mega squirt system (which would take care of the ignition as well..) Or... 2: buy/built an intake manifold and put carbs on it. I want to keep the stock L28 for now, as the rest of the car needs restoration/work and I am trying to keep this project from 'snowballing' into an ongoing "V8 swap, body kit, mod this and that. " kind of thing. You know how projects go! Anyway, what are your guys thoughts?

More pointless posts. Im going to hibernate. Ill be Back!
datsunlover replied to a topic in Fuel Delivery
Um, actually, they can. I saw one do it today. The gear inside skips sometimes, and throws out the dial about..oh... .030. (But thats a 10 year old vern.. ) -
I have to agree... what more do you want them to say man? I am curious about this mega squirt thing too, but I didn't take those posts as someone's sales pitch... just some good info, and an answer to your question.. As for my question; I am in Canada and I am really interested in using a MS system in my 75 280z... But what is the thing gona cost me? I'm just looking for a ballpark figure here...I would probly get the spark 'expansion' (?) cause I have a crappy dual point electrical dizzy right now, and a failing AFM. Im just looking for a rough cost (MS + spark kit, tps and other sensors I'd need, ect) and what I'd need to order off the web site. I found it a little confusing to understand... I already have the FI, so I figured it wouldn't take too much to install this thing, and I believe have the skils to do it.... Can you guys shed some light for me? Thanks

Ignite one can of gas simultaneously w. two matches?
datsunlover replied to a topic in Ignition and Electrical
Ok.. well, as for finding a 280zx Dizzy in my area, .1% chance. And getting one shipped to me would get expensive (I would think) I will post a wanted add in the buy/sell forum and see what happens. As for the Mopar swap, I just like the sounds of that because I have some friends in local scrap yards and it would be very cheep. (Chryslers are just scrap weight to these guys) Does anyone have a 'parts required list' or instructions to tell me how to do this swap? The other thing is, a good friend of mine who helps me with my car all the time is a HUGE Mopar guy and he'd love this. Just so he could say "Heh.. See; you need chrysler parts to make a Datsun run right! " -
Ignite one can of gas simultaneously w. two matches?
datsunlover replied to a topic in Ignition and Electrical
Um.. Phil: whats this about a Mopar ign. box? Would this work on my stock 280z? I have a 'dual point' distributor, and its got some issues. I was thinking of converting to a fully electronic (MSD or similar) but it's a lot of $$$. Is this a 'pull something out of a scrap yard Crysler)' or are you doing a Mopar engine?!? -

Hey RacerX; do you have any pics of the one you put the 300zx flares on? I was just going to hamer out/fill the indentations on the 300zx fenders, and only use from the top of the fender down. I figured I'd have a bit of trouble with the gas door, but I may just make a 'sunken in' pocket, and smooth the edges over.. or maybe put a racing style gas cap on it.

Wow.. um... holy $h!t... The ONLY reason I can come up with is that he wanted to get it on quick, and possibly be able to rip it out later just as fast... Maybe it was a leased car, and he wanted to be able to remove it all after the lease was up and not have to worry about damage charges.. I dono.. thats awfull though..

Man... what is wrong with the world? Girls dissapearing all over the place these days! Whats wrog with ppl..
