Our rights are being taken away-Patriot Act

I don't like either side of the Palestinian issue, but it's pretty easy to see where Moridin comes in on that one. I just wanted to point out a couple things about Palestine... I wouldn't trust the Balfour "Declaration" to entitle me to a ham sandwich if I were in Palestine in 1917. The whole meat of the document that entitles the Jews is --get this-- 1 sentence. When I read it I get "yeah, it's ok with us if you guys want to go there just don't F anyone over", and it doesn't do a damn thing to help establish a govt or state what should be done with the Palestinians or anything. What's more it has the qualification of "...nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of the non-Jewish communities in Palestine..." Clearly this didn't happen, but it was the result of both parties IMO. The Jews came in and bought up a bunch of land and irrigated it and farmed it and refused to let the Palestinians work for them and did not share in their technological advantage. The Palestinians had to keep selling more land to the Jews just to get by, but were increasingly angry about their social status and the Jews' determination not to help them. Arafat, who was (I think still is) the leader of FATAH, is a huge part of the problem. Part of the charter for Fatah reads as follows "Military defeat [of Israel] is not the sole goal in the Palestinian Liberation War, but it is the blotting out of the Zionist character of the occupied land, be it human or social." And "The Jewish state is an aberrant mistaken phenomenon in our nation's history and therefore there is no alternative but to wipe out the existential trace of this artificial phenomenon." Would YOU try to negotiate with that guy??? Sharon is a member of the Likud party, and here's a bit of their party charter "The right of the Jewish people to the land of Israel is eternal and indisputable and is linked with the right to security and peace; therefore Judaea and Samaria will not be handed to any foreign administration; between the [Mediterranean] Sea and the Jordan [River] there will be only Israeli sovereignty." Clearly the group which Sharon has aligned himself is only slightly more appeasable than Fatah. Sharon will back off when he gets Israel to be a solid sovereign nation from with no West Bank or Gaza strip, and Arafat just wants to kill every Jew in Palestine. I don't think that a lot of Americans understand what is going on there, but I think these guys are going to have to die for there to be peace. I see it similarly to Cuba. I think the situation in Cuba will probably improve 100 fold when Castro croaks. -
The pinion gears have a different pitch on the teeth. Despite the fact that they both have 10 teeth they won't interchange. Just switch the ring gear as joe suggested. If this is an R200 and you have 10mm ring gear bolts on the 3.90 then you'll need ring gear bolt spacers if you are swapping to the 300ZX 3:70 LSD. I bought some from Mat73GNZ, but I'm pretty sure he's out now. What he did was to buy a piece of 12mm OD 10 mm ID tube and cut them to fit. I think he said he made enough and sold enough to make a little profit on them.

Newbie seeking advice - what is the best L engine/head combo
JMortensen replied to a topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Damn dude, you are one pig-headed SOB. Just like me... The P heads have the best combo of these qualities. Peanut chamber, flat "deck" where the valves are, and a much smoother transition between the seats and the rest of the chamber. Just like the FIA heads IIRC the N heads have a crappier casting like my E31. Looking at the link below, that is definitely the case. But the casting issue and the small valves are the reasons why I was saying before that I wouldn't have sunk all that money into the E31 if I had known about the P head shaving thing when I built my engine. I spent lots of time fixing the crappy casting in the chamber, and then more time unshrouding the valves. Just take a look at the chamber shape and tell me that it's not better than your N head was before any modifications in terms of sharp edges and blending the seats into the chamber. http://geocities.com/zgarage2001/head.html If you can honestly tell me that you think your chamber was equivalent to that stock P head from the factory then I give up. -
I hate to disagree with you again freedom, but here's my take on Amend #2. The country had just fought for years to get out from under the colonial yoke by military victory over the Brits. The intention was to make sure that the people would have a method of overthrowing the new govt if the govt oppressed the people again. This is a subject that is very controversial, because laws have been passed like the 1934 National Firearms Act that said that you needed a license to own a fully automatic weapon, and the 1968 Gun Control Act which said guns should have a "sporting purpose", both of which clearly undercut the citizenry in their attempts to posess weapons capable of fighting off our own military. So the original intent of the law was to provide the citizens a means of defense against our own gov't in my opinion, and that of John Jay who IIRC wrote the damn thing, but that right has been curtailed over and over again in the last 100 years or so. Freedom is right in that there is a side benefit of making our country very difficult to invade, because any enemy force trying to get in would face not only an army of 1,000,000 soldiers or whatever it is right now, but also another estimated 145,000,000 armed citizens, and you can use a gun to protect your family, and for sporting purposes, etc.

Yeah, if there's one place I'd like to be as a Palestinian who was repeatedly questioned by the American authorities, it's Saudi Arabia. He picked just the right time to go too, now that they are cracking down on foreign terrorists. He probably got some serious questioning here, who knows what kind of methods they'll use to question him there. Makes my dangly parts dangle a little less just thinking about it. -
This was discussed fairly recently, but if you weld ABOVE the spring perch then it's not really so critical. I sectioned mine about 1.5" from the top of the tube just because that's what I had seen done before, but I think it was Terry who pointed out that the spring perch sits quite a bit lower than that, so the load of the chassis weight won't be carried by the part you've welded. You'll have some lateral loading and some pulling from the strut extension, but there won't be nearly as much load if you do the sectioning up top as there would be if you followed JohnC's post on sectioning and sectioned right where the new spring perch was going to go. Also if you did weld up high and had the settings too hot, your weld is easily accessible to be ground away. If it were to break, the suspension wouldn't come apart because almost the whole length of the strut would still be captured in the tube, and it would make a hell of a racket to let you know something is wrong. My $.02

Nevermind. Same compression ratio, same valve size, no pinging, same power output. I'd still think that the E88 might have had an advantage in the combustion chamber shape, especially with the effect of the overlap due to the big sharp ridge between the valve seats that I spent hours getting rid of on my E31 (mine was 1/4" tall in some spots). The E88 I have is perfectly flat there, so the overlap would be a lot more effective. Maybe the quench in the E31 made up for that. All hypotheticals. -
IMO and having driven a bunch of 10 lb flywheel 510s, the 10 lb is too light for a 4 cylinder. On the 6 in my friend's Z and mine (slightly heavier 12 lb) the extra 2 cylinders makes it just fine. Granted they are both NA, but I used to drive mine in traffic every day. Main thing is you need to get used to shifting faster. I think that was when I started cutting my tranny fluid with ATF.

Last post on the email thing then I'm done trying to convince you Wheelman. There have been plenty of illegal wire taps to prove that the wire tap authority could be abused. It's too easy to plant crap on anyone. If you read someone's snail mail that is one thing. The letter still goes to their home, they receive it and don't know that it has been read. Electonic files are totally different. Picture this: you wake up in the morning and find out on the news that the FBI raided a suspected child pornographer's house. They got a warrant for his computer and analyzed the hard drive and found 1000's of child porn pictures. Now which of us is going to defend the guy who has 1000's of kiddy porn pics on his hard drive? Might he have been framed? Will the jury convict? The idea is that it is EASIER to plant evidence in the world of electronic file transfer than it was through the mail. Physical evidence of wrongdoing isn't even necessary. Just electrons shooting through a wire and all of a sudden your guilty. Again, I'm not saying that this is anyone's intent or that we should be worried about this happening to us. Just that it is a possibility, and that if someone was in a position to misuse the power and wanted to, it would be relatively easy to do so. -

Strut Sectioning Question
JMortensen replied to SSflyer's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I think it is already pretty safe to say that Dan isn't going to want a Koni 8610. Probably the Tokico Blue or Illumina. If you go Illuminas Dan the BZ3099 fits in the front and if you ask for 240 fronts they fit in the rear. No one has said this with regards to the original question, but I just thought I would point out that if you use the same strut cartridge front and rear you need the spacer in the back because the strut tube is longer in the back. If you sectioned the front and rear so that they both fit the insert, then the only way to get the ride height level would be to run the rear spring perches much higher on the threaded adjuster than the fronts. Much better to have both sitting in about the same position and have more adjustment available in both directions, especially if you actually intend to change the ride height frequently. -

OK let me relate to you the situation which I personally saw over months and years of employment in a sales job: When I was 17-19, I worked for Ronco, Inc. You know, the Pocket Fisherman, GLH (Great Looking Hair), now he's got that rotisserie thingy. "Just set it--AND FORGET IT!" You know who I mean. Anyway we had at least 1/2 of the sales force that was either not working for sales or not claiming sales on their paycheck because they'd be bumped into the next tax bracket and make LESS money than if they didn't make the sales. This was a bottom of the barrel job to be sure, but even at this level people were aware and would do whatever they could to get out of a higher tax rate, despite the damaging effect it had on the business as a whole. Taxes CAN stifle business, and it's not as theoretical as you would make it out to be. -

True, but the profit motive gets A LOT STRONGER, which can drive sales and trade up, which brings in more tax thru sales tax (local) and income tax. Just because a lower percentage will get paid to the govt doesn't mean the govt will get less money. -

Cygnus, those cliches mean that people will need to die fighting for our continued freedom, not that people need to subjugate themselves to the will of the govt to ensure the continued "freedom". -

I would guess (and it is just a guess) that this has more to do with the exhaust valve size than anything else. Again we would have to have an impossible level of proof to say one way or the other. Could be that the E88 guy had .002 looser main bearings than the closest E31 guy, and the reduced friction in the bottom end made the difference. We don't even know the setup of the car vs his nearest E31 competitor. Racing is what you can put to the ground, not what the engine can produce. Plus neither of these engines is prone to pinging anyway, so the only thing missed out on in this situation is the compression and the tumble of the mixture due to quench. That very well may be made up for by the exhaust valve size. Maybe it was the same engine with two different heads in the above example. Doesn't really matter. The valve sizes being different is a pretty big disparity. BTW--I have one of those open chamber E88s. If you want to buy a "race proven" head, just let me know. So again, no real significance in that one... -

Also Wheelman, don't both parties getting an email have to have a PGP key to use PGP? I fooled around with it briefly, but I honestly don't recall. That kinda limits who you can send encrypted email to. -

OK, well that's good advice on how to KEEP the govt from reading email. That doesn't address whether they SHOULD be reading email in the first place. Not true. You can put a 135K image on a website, and display it as a 1x1 pixel image. It will be there, it will load into the cache, and you won't see it for what it really is. As far as deletion, you should already know that nothing gets deleted unless you have written over it. I know you can set Linux up to do this automatically, but then it slows your computer down A LOT because it's doing so much work to keep the drive clean while you're working. Not sure how available these types of tools are for Windows, but I can tell you that just having the Auto-Protect feature of NAV on my 2000 machine was too much hassle for me, and I can only assume that writing 1's and 0's on the disk freespace would be worse. Remember, we're talking about what is POSSIBLE. It is POSSIBLE that anyone could get railroaded by an overzealous prosecutor for having illegal images on their computer. That's what he took issue with. Not that it was likely that a jury would convict, only that it was possible to bring charges. -

No I'm not kidding unfortunately. Some of my closest friends have gone absolutely nuts in the past few years and now believe that Bush is out to get us, to start WWIII, to turn the US into a police state, etc etc etc. I'm not one of these people, but I know quite a few of them and they were what I would consider rational only a few years ago. Don't fool yourself by thinking that no one believes Michael Moore's BS or no one questions Bush's motives. That's my point previous to the one I quoted. At the time I had just looked up a whole series of bad things in order to make a point (like terrorist stuff, nazi stuff, anarchist cookbook types of things, etc). If that establishes a pattern, then who knows??? Maybe they were looking at me... I'm not saying the laws shouldn't change, but that there should be someone who understands the technology developing the new laws. Kinda funny... that buddy I was talking to who gave me those 4 points... we used to work together. He is an IT freakin genius. We had the same bosses at that job who were totally compuer illiterate. Funniest thing was when he got his reviews and raises. They basically had to ask him if he was doing a good job and then take his word when he said he was. They were in charge of his governance at that position but had no idea what the hell he was doing. It's a similar situation now with the govt passing these laws. Agreed. Although if I were rating Bush's presidency I'd probably only give him a B, not an A+. -

You clearly have people from all political persuasions (left, right and freaky) arguing against the Patriot Act in this post. I don't think anyone is denying that the act is intended to save innocent lives. We're just more wary of the potential abuses than you are. As far as comparing to a previous freedom-degrading threat, here is my post from another previous Patriot Act thread. You can see that my problem is with the technology that they are allowed to use to snoop and particularly email (which many would argue is the most benign part of the act): -
OT, but that's always been part of the conservative agenda IME.

Bolting the tank to the head is going to heat up the fuel. Not a good idea. Getting rid of the stock fuel rail and fuel pump cured my vapor lock issues, if that puts it in perspective at all. I suppose you could put it on the fenderwell. Even so, you're going to have a high pressure pump feeding your surge tank, which is not necessary. Why not just put it back by the tank and use a little carby pump to fill it?
