  1. msd 6a has a tach output on the side of the box-use that.if you are using a 6a you cant get a good reading from - side of coil-because of multi fire at low rpm on msd.
  2. here is the deal-86 mm flat top piston,0 deck,p90 head ,1 mm gaskit or 2mm gaskit.homey stroker-machine the dish off of stock turbo piston and install diesel crank.that dish is about .080 thick.with the crank the piston will only come out 2mm or .080".dont want to buy lots of parts right now.
  3. with stock 81zxt in my 77 i have had no ontrack pcv problems with system routed as stock.i am installing megasquirt and i am putting 1 of those little k&n filters on the valve cover .i got a 78 pcv hose (zxt not available from dealer) and cut it down for bottem pcv hose.if that breather filter leaks oil i will route it to a puke tank.
  4. if any of of these politicians are democrats i can tell you what the deal is.i california the major supporter of democratic party is the sierra club.i am a member of the blue ribbon coalition.blue ribbon coalition represents off road vehicle users.the brc puts out a monthly magazine with legislative actions that they are fighting.its usually all democrats that sponser tree hugger stuff.but our politicians are still sucking d#$k for the corporate campaign contributions that they got.we just for for the lesser of 2 evils.when we figure out how to get rid of corporate influence out of our government we will be free again.
  5. obd11 vehicles have o2 sensors behind the cats-their function is to monitor cat efficiency.the ecm throws codes if the rear(cat montor o2's) dont put out the proper readings that are expected by the software in the ecm.since i was a ford dealer tech and have a california smog license i know enough to put a obd11 motor in a z.but do i want to go through that much work-no.my 77 has a swap sticker in the door-but it sucks because it keeps getting sent to test only stations.car is registered in different county in the sierras now.but this trick probably wont work for long.
  6. what kind of head gaskit was in it?heard fel pro is not good?got a full felpro set because i am doing alot of motor work.the felpro gaskit in the set has steel in the middle and is 1.2 mm not compressed.

  8. most of california is very dry.rainy season is only really about 3 monthes.then we have only %15 or %20 humidity the rest of the year.the sheet metal they used in old datsun likes to rust.when i see picture of members welding in new floor pans in old 240's i wonder why they just dont get a body from cali.if you factor in the amount of labor + parts i can get a body for $200.if you want a nice 510 you would be wise to just buy a low rust cali car.plane tickets are cheap.$1000 to fly out and have the car shipped home.you could spend monthes welding floor in an old car.the local pick&pull has 2 240s that could be used for bodys on a project.the cars will probably be crushed.if you want to see the best 510's in the usa come to mount shasta ski area on 2nd weekend of july.many show quality cars with motor swaps.
  9. do not install used injectors with out having them flow tested.i have some lucas injectors that i used for a few years on my zxt engine but i took them out.bought them new and always ran good.when i swapped in zxt motor i knew i didnt want to waste time trouble shooting nasty plugged injectors.engine is getting megasquirt with 42lb lucas injectors now.could you possably have non turbo injectors?
  10. some radiator shops will boil them out for you.you can also have a sealer coating put inside if there is exposed rust.if rust is flakinf it will plug the pick-up sock.
  11. i had some yokohama avs size 205/60-15 on 81zxt wheels that would do this.when i wore these out i started running used tires for street(i worked at a car dealer) and kumho track tires for track day.when i got rid of the avs the car tracked normal.i aligned the car myself on $45000 hunter alignment rack.
  12. nowthat you got the springs in i am sorry you have something else to fix.something i do when i assemble l28 motors.i have a tap for the head bolt holes.i run the tap through and clean out the holes with brake clean and compressed air.use NEW headbolts.any pitting on the bolt shanks will be a weak spot and i had a bolt break while assembling an engine once.make sure the bolts will turn freely in the block-if it binds up it wont torque the head even.be clean.
  13. some of the late model ford cars use a return-less system.there is a pressure sensor on the fuel rail and the fuel pump is pulse-width-modulated by the ecm.return at the tank might work but you might need a bleed valve at the front.
  14. my 77/81zxt has had a few different ecms for other 81-83zxt and they all worked.but i am installing megasquirt and i am using a prefabbed hall sensor and magnets made by cherry.magnets will be installed on flywheel.

  16. a word on noises-the gc camber plates in my car have about 80,000 miles on them.until head gaskit blew car was a daily work car.roads are rough around here.i am sure i will check for some wear when the engine comes out .car is getting prepped for more use.the mono ball bearing is replacable.
  17. i moved the pivot point on my front crossmember upward and out by 3/4".then i heated the tie rod ends to take that downward kink out of them.i dont know if this is correct engineering wise (i doont have fancy software for this) but the car handles very well.with gc camber plates i run 1.2 degrees negative in street and 3.2 on the track.if you are going to use the car for any kind of competition check the rule book first.my car is just a weekend open track /driver school car.
  18. i have had gc plates in front for years.they work good.had some carrera plates in the rear but i took them out because the monoball bearing rattled and drove me nuts.the gc plates rattle on bumps some.maybe the emi plates dont rattle.if was was building a z and knew it would never be used for any kind of competition i would avoid using camber plates.
  19. i was a tech at a ford dealer till i quit a couple of months ago.never heard off any extra black boxes on fords.just the ecm for the efi .but it records trouble codes and engine overspeed comes up sometimes.thing to really watch out for -gps tracking devices in rental cars.they like to charge you if you go off road.
  20. i pulled some rods out of a 810(l24 rods ) at stockton pick&pull today.no tp sensors for my megasquirt anywhere.maybe he was down here to?
  21. in lake havasu arizona they sell 100ll avgas at the pumps becuase of all the high performance boats-blown bbc chevys-last summer it was only $2.99 a gallon.cheap compared to california 91 junk for 2.65.i ran some in my merc outboard 2.5 efi motor.it ran fine.you can get the specs(grams of lead per gallon) from the supplier.the race gas i use when i run my z on a road race track is 110 octane -3.2 grams per gallon.its funny how my car gets better fuel milage on race gas.its that crappy oxiginate-alcohol-that make street gas have less milage.
  22. thats 1 way to clean out your closet.i got a check from some guys in the uae for $21000 for my $15000 boat.when they asked where the difference was(please wire the $6k back) i forworded them a webpage from a classic car website about the scam and told them even if the check was good they paid $21k for a boat.never heard back from them.too bad there wasnt some way to send them a virus for their computor.
  23. used to build salvage total cars and somtimes that repop taiwan crap wasnt worth the time it took to make it fit correctly.i always made sure to compare to oem prices -if it was close i went new oem.there are still lots of z's in california.
  24. i have some single coil-on-plug units from a 2002 ford f150 v8 truck.the power transistors for the coils are in the ecm.do the 300zxt coils have 2 wires going to them or more than 2?the bosch coil-on-plug units have heat sinks on the top and have more than 2 wires going to them.i saw a set of these from a 2004 bmw 330i.i suspect that the bosch units take a low level signal direct from ecm and have a +12v and ground wire too.to use coil-on-plug with ms&s you would have to hook up a ford edis system and fire cylinders in pairs every revolution-1&6 2&5 3&4 .the coils would be connected in parallel.newer cars have cam position sensors becuase the cam turns at 1/2 speed-than you can get a true #1 cylinder position.if you read from the crank #1 could be on either compression or exhaust stroke.some aftermarkit ecm's like a haltech can use both a crank and cam position sensor to fire cop ignition and full sequintial injection.
  25. i bought 1 of those ic's too but havent got the car ready for it yet.a little hand polishing with mother's and they look real good.i will probably weld some 3" 90's on the ends centered with the vent holes in the core support.much better than spending $800 or so with spearco.no worries about being big enough.that thing would probably work with a turbo v8.i bought an assembled megasquirt wiith all options for $430.a set of 8 42 lb injectors for $280.my car should be running good soon.
