z31 drifter-work on your personal problems first and keeps cars as a hobby for awhile.i have worked on cars for a living for over 20 years.it sucks.the pay sucks.3 hernia operations in 20 years.the dealerships suck-take time to learn about the flat rate pay system.they dont pay you to do good work-they penalize you.i dont think those schools are worth the money.you can take the ase tests on your own to see where you are at in knowledge.i had a ase master auto cert before i worked at a dealer.i worked on my own before i moved to a big city to work at a dealer.before i worked on cars i got a 2 year college degree in electronics-shoud have stayed in electronics.

i work on fords at a dealer for a living but have worked at a independent shop before.these kind of projects are not economically feasable for a real repair shop.maybe in some place cheap like the south but not in california.if you have to hire this kind of work out you are better off making payments on a new car and not being late for work.the small shop i worked at did projects for long time customers-like high performace rv engines.but i can remember a rebuild being done twice on a motor home becuase the engine balooned the torque convertor and the thrust bearing on the crank went out.if the car breaks down and you didnt build it alot of shops wont work on hot rods.or it will be straight time and material-there is NO motor manual time books for custom work.the car will need to goto smog referee to get certified-how many trips will it take to pass the car?isnt your time worth more than that?the engine has to be from the same year of chevy or newer, has to have all oem chevy smog junk, has to be from a california emission certified car.the ref HAS to be able to understand that all smog functions are working-like the vapor recovery system for the gas tank.i have a california smog license.i have done 2 swaps that were certified by the ref.my 77 z has a 81 zxt motor.then i built a 84 el camino with a 87 305 tpi motor.both took so much time there would be no way a commercial shop could make money .

is the check engine light on?it should be-use it a scanfor dtc's.next check fuel pressure.some newer cars have a fuel system that doesnt use a return line .the ecm pulses the fuel pump power and there is a pressure sensor on fuel rail.if so use pid monitor on scan tool for fuel pressure.goto to a internet s2000 forum or try to locate factory tsb's-if the s2000 in your shop is doing this it woulndt be the first.also pull a fuel sample from the fuel rail into clear glass container-could be water in fuel.try to do basic test and get a result-try to crossthe basics of of a list-like fuel pressure ,water in fuel, compression test.where is the timing for ecm picked up at-the cams(belt driven) or flywheel or crank shaft.it could be out of time -a toothed wheel could have slipped or timing belt slipped.

i have a 77 with 81 motor.it has a bar label in the door-car was certified at ref station.the 81 zxt electronics dont give 21st century driveability.i have a smog license and work as a dealer tech for a ford dealer.dmv renewal always comes back as test only every other year.that sucks since i cant test my own car.but i can pretest it.the na efi system and the turbo efi system are not close to being the same.

Sources for similar-to-stock bigger capacity fuel injectors
randy 77zt replied to a topic in Fuel Delivery
mercedes 4.5l v8 made in middle 70's .or a late model mercury 2.5l efi outboard.if you go cheap you will regret it.get a new set or if you get usd injectors have them flow tested.i lean injector will melt a piston quick.when you start making 2hp/ci you dont get much time for correcting mistakes.i think a company called brucatto sells them at reasonable price for merc outboard engines.i had a boat with a merc 2.5.it was real fast -
How much can a stock 280ZXT clutch take?
randy 77zt replied to pjo046's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
i dynoed my 77z/81zxt and oem clutch let go at about 280ft/lbs torque.i used a oem type 240mm clutch (aftermarkit daiken kit) for about 70000 miles.it only let loose once on a drag strip.so for normal driving it should be fine. -
put in a different trans.best trans ratios are in a 82/83 na trans.the trans leaks at speedo gear and then a countershaft bearing goes out.i have a 77.it had oem 5 speed but the ratios sucked at sears point .it had a big gap between 2nd & 3rd. and 5th wasnt a big jump from 4th.the 82/83 na trans has close 1,2,3,4 and a better 5th for high speed cruise.usually the trans can be repaired cheaply if you get a trans guy that can pinpoint the problem while carefully disassembling trans.nissan dealer still sells parts at a reasonble price.

magic-how do you like autronic efi-there is a dealer here in california using it on supercharged big block chevy boat engines.seems they have a fully epoxy potted unit for marine use.probably wouldnt be a bad idea to have a water proof ecm anyway.
-
what part of california did you get it from?i have worked on a few around here in central ca.i you need any more e mail me?cars dont rust too fast in central ca.
-
horsepower-kind of like sex-never enough.if you have alot you just have to be more carefull with the throttle.if the car is tuned well it will just idle around unless you want some action.

i work as a ford dealer tech in northern california.i get $21.75 /hr.but i never make 8 hours per day because the a$$hole service manager the owner hired wants to give all the service work(brakes, alignments) to some guys he pays $12 hour to .so i get stuck with warrenty work.i have a friend that drives truck and makes more than me.i want to move out california.too many people and too many laws.

adjustment would allow for being able to line up the rotor with the contact in the distributor cap.this should be checked during engine assembly.i have a 81zxt in my 77.what i want to do is use the nissan cas to run an aftermarkit efi system.

4 wire 02 was put on newer cars to speed warm up time of the sensor.o2 sensors dont put out signal until they get warmed up but the exhaust system on a 1 wire sensor.after the emission control/efi system got more sophistcated in mid 90's the bulk of the emissions were made by a car in its first 90 seconds of run time during warm up.so the heated 02 was born.the newer(96+) cars with obd 11 can detect open circuits on the 02 heaters.wire colors on ford 4 wire-both white wires are heater .grey is signal out.black is ground.reading o2 voltages is better than nothing but not as good as a 5 wire data logging mixture meter like a innovate motorsports unit or other brand of 5 wire unit.i had a 4 wire on my 81 zxt engine with the heater hooked up.you could hear it switch to closed loop after about a minute if i let it idle after a cold start.

i work at a ford dealer.2 days ago we got a gt40 in.it came in a covered truck on a private carrier-not on the open trucks.it had a coolant leak right off of the truck.it takes another tech 4 hours to fix it.it had to have an access cover removed from in side the car for access to front of motor.i knew they wouldnt let me drive it-i have a reputation for scary test drives.yesterday i was off work for a gastroscopy .today i heard the service manager got it sideways and almost ended up in the dodge dealership across the street.since that jacka$$ was hired all the techs havent made any money.but i really doubt he will get a chance to drive that car any more.the general manager at the dodge dealer called the gm up work.busted!it would be better if service manager would drive it more-maybe darwin will catch up to him.nothing like a short wheelbase ,lots of torque and large cold tires.i really dont think they will sell this car on the d plan-that is a ford sponsered plan for dealership employees to buy cars slightly under cost.sticker price $169000.i heard about $200000 dealer pacs.i would pass on a ford-its full of left over parts shared from other models.did you know a gt40 has a steering column out of a focus?

Death wish: Rode an R1 powered ATV yesterday
randy 77zt replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
that thing needs an aftermarkit extended swing arm.it looks like it is in a old warrior frame -quad used to have a 350cc 2 valve sohc motor.best place to ride something like that is in big sand dunes like glamis or dumont.i used to have a honda 250r fourtrax with a cr500 motor in it.it is a blast having enough hp to upshift while going uphill on a steep dune.that thing needs a good set of paddles for dunes. -
has anybody ever checked to see if the 81-83zxt cars had any kind of advance programed into the ecm's or do they run fixed timing?i have had my 77 turbo for years and have never bothered to check this.ialways ran the timing at 20btdc because i run more boost-14 psi on pump gas.

my car is inop-but when ever i run a open track day i use race gas.usually 10 gallons of union76 110 leaded with the rest pump 91.but usually it 100+ degrees it thunderhill.the hardest part of track days is learning the track.best way to learn the track-forget you are on a race track.pretend the track is a mountain road you drive to work.concentrate on using the whole track while driving smoothly.learn where the bumps and patched spots are.

Man arrested for going 140 mph over limit**UPDATED**
randy 77zt replied to Tim240z's topic in Non Tech Board
i have run 140 on my fz1-that was enough.i ran a speedo 145 in my z.its corrected to +2 mph on a chassis dyno.but i really liked to run 110 mph in my 18' boat.no worrys about cops.since the boat had a tunnel bottem you are really flying.200+ on a public road is not my game.unless the road is closed.i am going to go out and drag race a busa with my fz1.the busa is stock with a 6'4" 350 lb rider.my bike has had the carbs rejetted with a slip-on muffler.i weigh 170.should be interesting.this will be run on an abandoned airstrip. -
years ago when i did turbo swap on my car i installed engine with new lucas injectors.if you installed a used engine with used injectors you dont know if the fuel is flowing evenly to each cylinder.before wideband o2/dataloggers where out i would see .83 to .9 v on the o2 sensor at 16 psi boost with stock ecm.but the lucas injectors are supposed to be more pressure sensative.fuel pressure would run up to 60 psi with stock regulator.car is parked with blown head gaskit after years of use(abuse).i didnt like the driveability of the oem zxt electronics.car is planned for massive engine upgrade soon.

my dad always threatened to tow me and my brothers cars off to the junk yard when they were not running.we rebuilt the engine in my bros 66 mustang cause it was using oil.the old man sad it would never run again.we made it run just to piss him off.

trans you need is a rare unit.it is from a 5 speed 3.0v6 aerostar.best wiring book is from ford.it is called a evtm by the technicians.most of the engine harness is separate from the car harness.good luck.i am a ford dealer tech.the only work i saw these motors need is a water pump/timing belt change.do yours out of the car and save your self some time.at least inspect the weep hole on the water pump.
-
i was there but my z wasnt-its broke.i like to look at the workmanship on the 510 engine swaps.used to be vg30's in 510.now its sr20det.must be the bling factor.thinking about a jspec vq30det for my z.

How do people smog RB's, single turbo Supras in CALI??????
randy 77zt replied to cyrus's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
if all of the oem smog equipment is hooked up changing a supra from 2 to 1 turbo would not effect the operation of the smog equipment.as far as 240sx swaps the people that own these cars know that they will always have a problem smogging the car.some counties in california are transfer only.that is the loop hole most people are using because at least the car has a california license plate.the populated areas of neveda have tougher inspections than california.so rent that po box some where else.i went to a smog update class to renew my license( ca smog license) and the instructor said the cars that got busted with jdm engines got impounded.but dont hang out where the street racers get busted. -
saab 9000 IC intercooler quantitative analysis
randy 77zt replied to mobythevan's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
i have had 1 of these laying around for a couple of years.when i was out at pick&pull i got it because it fit the best .its got to flow more than a starion ic and much easier to install.i heard the weak points are the plastic tanks blowing off.but this unit seems like the best cheap way out.better-isuzu npr.hard to find and not cheap.best-aftermarkit custom unit =$.congrats to those doing the testing.
