when i win the lottery i want a 20b turbo in my zthink i am going to have to settle for a ford 5.0 instead.
-
fox bodies-i have ridden around laguna in a fully prepped by grigs 94 and think they only made it understeer faster.not the same balence as my z.i bought the 5.o cause it was cheap.i have a mountain of turbo stuff .a 60-1 /stage 5 turbo.just rebuilt late 82/83 zx na trans.act 240 mm street clutch.2 complete engines.manifolds and heads.diesel crank.i want a car that is faster to wrench on -5.0 is easier.more torque out of corners.plus summit cheap parts.will be running my a/c though-it blows 32 degree air.i puuled that motor in 1/2 hour.

i read your story on the driver's school at laguna.i have had lots of fun there in my z.like the time i had a nasa instructor trying to show me how fast he was-he ended up in the sand in turn 6 with overheated brakes .his its car couldnt hang with my street car.there is a bump that lofts a car just before the corkscrew.if your are running flat out you can get air past #3 braking marker.it really wakes you up -i got on brakes ,let off brakes and braked again a little before #1 marker.turned in and made it..turn 2 is tricky.turn 3,4,5,6 easy.7-what turn.8-9-10takes awhile to master.laguna seems easier to me than thunderhill or sears point.but more fun

i work as a ford dealer tech for a living.i laughed so hard my eyes are watering.but i feel sorry for the horse.if you ever want to know the real story on how good a car is take a dealer tech out to lunch.

I *HATE* working in IT *mild warning on nasty content*
randy 77zt replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
at work i am famous for fixing small electronic devices.with a 4 pound ball peen hammer that i use for front end work/so i would just give all those disgusting laptops from ex employees the ball peen hammer treatment and dumpster them.when i am done nobody will be reading that hard drive.it really pisses me off when they get stuck on the end of the hammer. -
even if good ole usa quits shooting soon to be scrap metal in to space those wannabe third world countries will do it just to show that they dont have to pay the usa to shoot up thier satalites.as far a cell phones go most other countries that are behind in installing phone systems are going all cellular-less maintenance than copper wires or fiber optic cables.plus the locals wont try to sell it for scrap.

i am running a 81-83 zxt alt in my 77 with a 81 zxt engine.the 77 alt wouldnt run the a/c and lights at night-its hot in summer here.there are wires at the old regulator that you have to id with a test light.the 2 original field and stator wires are removed.you are left with 2 wires.1 is for the charge light in volt meter.1 is hot from key to trigger alt.these 2 wire got to new alternator.i hooked up the big hot lead and started car up.i touched the key wire to the s and l terminals.the l is for the red warning light and the s is for turning on .

i just got a 5.0 motor with edelbrock performer manifold and edelbrock aluminum heads for $400.it had a carb on it but carb was junk.engine is at original bore.a parts guy at work is building a 240 sx with a rb20 but to me that sounds like a waste of time.the 5.0 motor is best bang for buck and its easy to slide/drift with torque.goto sanderson header website -they have a few tight style headers .since you are in sf you can always put motor in car and take it to them to see what headers will fit.you will need to get the trans converted to 2.95 1st gear wc style.the oem 3.35 1st is useless with low rear gear.measure the height of crankshaft centerline at front and output shaft at rear so new motor lines up with out having drive shaft run at bad angles.the limiting factor on a 5.0 is the hydralic roller lifters-they are heavy.6500 rpm max with good valve springs.for a drift car motor i would run solid lifters or soild rollers .if you need trans work done or some on site ideas email me.

an alcohol engine is jetted with double the size carb jets than a gas motor.engine will run lean.plus alcohol attracts water and condensates in your crankcase.it swells fuel lines.avoid this stuff-its for race cars that are torn down alot.run good gas and build a not to high compression engine.some guys shoot nitrous with alcohol or nitrous with an auxilary gastank filled with race gas.if you have a good cooling system.aluminum heads, and watch your ignition advance curve you can run about 10 to 1.

Bosch fuel pump and Cartec/Bell progressive fuel unit
randy 77zt replied to a topic in Fuel Delivery
the fuel pump might be needed for a car with larger injectors and aftermarkit efi system but stock zxt unit is fine for stock injectors.the fuel pressure regulator basically just restricts the fuel return and runs up the pressure on the injectors.its kind of a crutch for not having aftermarkit efi.its use will stretch out the usefullness of oem efi but you will hit a wall soon .probably at about 275 at the rear wheels.the oem air flow meter is a restriction.i would skip this stuff and save money for aftermarkit efi.i have a new cartech unit in box-will sell if you want it.just got a ford 302 with a 5 speed. -
best thing for lubing seal on a rotory engine is running a little two stroke oil in gas-like 100to1.ditch the mazda system.might be interested in sds but have lots of bills lately.

being the average gear head i own 2 motorcycles.a 87 honda xr 600 and a 2002 yamaha fz1.been riding for 35 years.dont trust the cars around you-leave room.i feel safer in my 100+ mph 18' boat than on my bike though.the guy probably had a worn tire on a wet road.helmet must be strapped on.
-
after i sell my boat i am planning a long rod 306 with solid roller lifters.engine will be used on a road race course.july 2003 car craft got 400hp out of a stock bottem end 302 with afr heads and a carb.headers and 1.7 rockers.so if i get 400 at the wheels on something that can handle weekend abuse i will be happy.like running the silver state classic and then driving car to work on monday with out touching a single tool to it.

you want to run alternator only-there are 2 types of attack to problem.if you have bucks-get a march pulley kit.if you are poor but have time/tools/welder you go to pick&pull and study other fords.if you got a clockwise water pump(v belt) and a grooved serpentine pulley you could probably put a spring loaded tensoiner on the air pump spot and delete the ac/ps brackit.note that on a serpentine drive water pump runs ccw.v belt it runs clockwise.

chevy weight is more due to taller deck height on engine.common chevy rod length is 5.7".common ford 302 is 5.1".alot of people are using aftermarkit 5.4 " rods on a ford with semi-custom pistons.on a 347 stroker oil rings run unsuported over piston pins on some pistons.i have seen this pistons break.more is not always better.if you use a longer rod you get less side thrust on piston skirt.many 351 ford small blocks are built with a 6.2" rod.
-
a zx has more width under hood.i work as a tech for a ford dealer.i know an instructor at ford training school that has new 4.6dohc,wire harness&ecm, clutch and trans for sale for $6000.i have looked at it -its all new and not fired up.engine has serpentine belt and all options on it.
-
didnt read post completly.maybe measure the banjo bolts and get earl's catalog and try to match some fittings to the oem bolts.
-
i cut the crimps off with a die grinder and slid on some kind of commercial aeroquip hose i got from local supplier.i did the same thing with the oil cooler.them mounted oil cooler in front.oil cooler in 1/2 hour.

Chevy starters, starting to get me pissed...
randy 77zt replied to Owen's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
some times chevy starters have to be shimmed because the gear and the flywheel are engageing too tight.look at the wear patterns on the flywheel teeth.also if you have a trunk mounted battery i always run a ground from the battery to a starter bolt. -
since i put zxt motor in my 77 a few years ago i have had 2 ecus go bad.put in ecu from pick&pull.didnt care what year just plugged it in .always worked fine.i always buy the ecu and afm if i see them on a car at p&p.best to have spare parts on the shelf in the garage.

Motor in...turn the key...and...
randy 77zt replied to JB_BA's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
its very rare that an engine is dead in all cylinders.check the cam timing.the only time i hear an engine spin free at work is when its a 4 cylinder with a broken timing belt. -
i have a 81 zxt in my 77.want to install haltech or dtafast system and run it off of oem crank wheel and pick up.just need to grind out 2 teeth btdc.any body tried this?have never had problems with crank pick up in 7 years.plus i have a spare.this seems better than looking for a 82/83 zxt distributor.a lot of oem efi systems on late model cars use a missing tooth wheel.you can only run waste spark this way though.if you go cop(coil on plug) you need a cam position sensor.working at a ford dealer i have a waste spark 6 cylinder coil box off of blown up v6.plus i have a full engine harness for a 2001 4.6 truck with a 8 cop units.

Q's about using N/A distributor with Turbo motor and ECU
randy 77zt replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
iif you use a 75-78 distributor the mag pickup will directly fire a msd box.you could get a msd box with a boost timing retard built in .it will need a vacuem line from intake manifold runto it.run the vacuem advance.it will go back to no advance under boost.at cruise under no boost you should get 32 to 35 degrees total advance at 3000 rpm or so.under boost it should retard to 20 to 24 degrees btdc.the zx distributor will fire msd or others using points wire.watch out for locked up mechanical advance on used distributors.there are some plastic parts that break under the pick up plate and lock up the mechanical advance mechanism.use a hand vacuem pump and a good timing light with advance dial on back. -
i have a 81zxt engine in my car.i am thinking of removeing oem zxt efi system and switching to haltech or dtafast.has anybody removed 2 teeth from the crank wheel and used oem crank sensor?never had a problem with it(7 years) plus i have spares.i think its a 60 tooth.usually on modern efi systems on oem cars the toothed wheel has 1 or 2 teeth missing 40 to 60 degrees btdc.also need to use an output to trigger egr on smog test time.the never check to see what ecm is in car.car does not have a check engine light.as long as timing and egr works and cat is on it passes.but i pretest it first.

burned out mechanic-looking to start doing something else
randy 77zt replied to randy 77zt's topic in Non Tech Board
no computors for me.i have a 2 year degree in electronics, ase certified master technician, and a california smog license.the ex it manager for kb home lives across the street from me.they outsourced his job.i am probably going to buy some real estate out of cali and rent it out.i am looking for a way to spend winters in baja.will be going to flagstaff az to look at property.i am also getting info on hud and sba loans.or maybe building an rv campground in baja.
