Ok now it is running reliably TUNING?
v80z replied to v80z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
John an jt Thanks a lot. I am on nights now. Vwry anxiouss to get started with what you have told me. JT1 I left the thread yesterday looking for a new carb and thinking UUUHHHH where can I steal another $250 - $500 for a holley dominator. but now with your note today. You are right for now tune what I got. Edlebrock's site said the carb I have will support cams up to 240 duration so while mine is higher than that I should be able to put a better tune on it than what I got. I wanted to test drive it tonight because I realized that I had the crane cd box rev limiter set at 5500 rpm asa well aas the shift light. So I think that was the break up at the upper end. I put the shift light at 6700 and the limiter at 7200. Wanted to spin it up but decided to come to work in comfort tonight. I will get on it. Had to work late yesterday and did not sleep much today. As far as a kit for tuning the carb. What do you think is needed JT1. Would buying one of the edelbrock tuning kits do it? When I buy dyno time I would like to be ready. -

Thanks guys. That is alot of info and some I will have to ask more questions about. Let me do some work and more research before getting back to you. The cam comes from a store on ebay called Racers Outlet http://stores.ebay.com/Racers-Outlet I bought springs enough to handle the 508 lift Which is not a tremendous lift. John and jt1 hang with me on this thread as I work through all the issues you have given me. It is very much appreciated. Man this is fun. John when you say locked out do you mean that the advance is fixed at 34-36 with no mechanical advance? I guess you would use some sort of electronic retard to get started? Who is BG? "If you are using locked out advance disconnect it. Its only for part throttle response and slightly better mpg." I dont know what a locked out advance is. I dont think it is as my timing marks seem to advance when revving from idle. Lobe Seperation is 106 they suggested .030 for lash but I am running close to .020. Yeah when I start it you can see the spectator's inquisitive looks. Which Holley? What other carb brands? -
Getting ready to do some exhaust work. Please send pics of your exhaust work to jemofvausa@cox.net or post Thanks

Well I have been out on the interstate and have completed several drives with no major mishaps. First Impressions.BLur. Remember when you first saw hans Solo and Luke make that first jump to hyperspace and all the stars instantly got trails converging out from the center of their vision? HAHAHA. In my 42 years have never had a car that could rip the tires 1st and 2nd. That is so much fun. Normal medium lauches produce alot of squeal BUT NO BLACK MARKS. HMMM. Car is too light? Now on to the tuning. Config: 1970 10.25:1 CR 350 SBC .030 over Stock heads med. performance Intakes are the 1.94 not 2.02. Exhaust 1.60 stock bottom pistons have pressed rods with Hypertectic pistons heads have new valves, fresh cuts, fresh stem seals, press ins removed and replace with screw in. Crane race roller rockers Cam Solid circle track Cam I picked for upper end power not drivability Solid Lifter Cam specs Valve adjustment Hot .030 Gross valve Lift .508 Lobe Lift .339 Duration at .020 tappet lift Intake 298 exhaust 294 Duration at .050 tappet lift Intake 251 exhaust 248 Valve timing at .050 intake Open 23.0 BTDC Closed 47.5 ABDC exhaust 54.0 14.0 Edlebrock air gap peformer intake edlebrock 750cfm carb HEI shell connected to a crane CD ignition and crane PS2 coil Vaccuum adavnce is hooked up In the current config with the dizzy set for no advance , in the stcok position. I have fair accelleration from idle to 5000 rpm. After that it starts to break up? Carburation? Timing? Advance? What are the basic steps I need to go through.

spray bar or drilled? Schneider did not put a plug in the end of my cam when they shipped it to me. Probably standard procedure. Out of ignorance I fired mine up with no plug in the drilled cam and no spray bar. Once I got it plugged up it was fine. I am sure it contributed to the short life of that cam and rockers. Drilled Cam must have plug in the end. DOH!

are you going it alone or do you have help
v80z replied to grumpyvette's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I read and enjoyed all the replies in this thread. If anything ever has to get done I do it myself. I try and research as much as possible. I outsource machining and most welding. Mistakes can be costly. But I did not let that scare me when I assembled my first motor. I just did not put alot of money in it. YEah I spun a couple bearings but I found out why and do not repeat those mistakes. there is no other way for me to learn. Grump I appreciate everything you said especially the part about finding out "EXACTLY" how something is supposed to be done. I find that there are alot of people who talk about doing something and then there are those who do it. RIght now the SBC still presents alot of mysteries to me. I am ready to start another engine build slowly and correctly. Would like to pick your brain. I will definately look at all your posts before consulting you. It is a grand adventure trying-- success or failure always provides feedback for the next attempt. AT 43 with young children, 5 and 10, I have come to the realization that if something on the car doesnt get done today that is OK. The car take the lowest priority over everything. I do enjoy those hours in the garage. When I am out there I loose track of time. It is usually once the kids and wife go to bed that I change clothes and head out there. I used to get really frustrated because I could not spend every waking hour on a project or steps of a project until it was complete. Now I have learned to set limits and boundaries. Oh yeah I run over once in a while. The other thing is that after a few days in a row of wrenching my shoulders seem to start aching. WTF is that? My wife says bursitis "You are older now". When did this happen. What else is going to happen. -

I been fighting a cooling issue. Did alot of reading here about fans. Seems that the Black Magic Fan or the Taurus Fan was the way to go. Called the junkyard today. They said come on up and pull what you need. I went up there expecting a real hassle. Carried my tool box back to the back and lo and behold there was a Taurus SHO sitting by the crusher. Popped the hood and went to work. 10 minutes later I was walking out. I didnt even ask what the price was just handed the man a $10.00 bill and he said have a nice day. Got it home tested it. Man does that thing move some air. Cleaned it up and did some dremel cutting to fit the shroud nice and neat. Man sometimes the force is with you. Thanks for all who suggested this fan. Hope it makes a difference.

http://jemofvausa.no-ip.org/videos/10kart_1.wmv Not sure what happened to the audio used a free .wmv editor. My son and I were very excited Saturday Morning for oour first karting practice/shake down. This track is not where our club runs. It is a rental kart track that is open early for race karting. $10 for a 2hour session open practice. We trailered the kart successfully brought fuel air and movie camera. Forgot all the tools UGH!!!. There were about 8 karts on track 2 cycles, shifters and 4 strokes. Well we got it fired and got it out there. He made about 20 laps his first session. He came in and felt great. Once he went out every one else came in and he had the track alone for his session. His kart was very loose on those old tires which was good. He did some correcting as his tail slid out. The 2nd session he went out in traffic. I think it was nerve racking for him. It will be better when he is on track with the same experience level and power level. He felt like he had to watch out for the others all the time instead of driving his line and letting others pass. Bad advice from dad. "Stay to the outside" So I confused him a bit. He came in after about 6 laps and 2 spin outs. After each spin he got the kart going and entered the track safely which was good practice. After that session one of the drivers came and told him about staying on the line not worrying and looking back that they would pass him where ever and to be predictable. It will come with more time. There was one fellow who was overdriving his kart that day and hit the tires and flipped. Got pinned until others could get to him. HE was OK but I think it made my son even more nervous. He went out for a third session but came in after 3 laps complaining of hand vibration. Wonder what that is about and how to fix it? I think his first practice was taxing both physically and mentally. Today he said he was ready to go again. HE also said that if all he got to do was drive at Ft. Eustis he would be very happy. I think karting with HRKC in a more organized environment will be even more satisfying for him. We met a father son team out there that started like we are and were driving a Birel shifter. They were very friendly and offered us a lot of advice. All in all it went well. I am planning on running the new tires next week at practice. Hopefully he wont be as loose.

Anyone using 16x12 diamond racing wheels???
v80z replied to gearheadstik's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Joe, I looked up your previous order to see that you ordered the 16x10 4x4.5 bolt pattern with a 4.5" back space in silver. I don't have any idea what you need to order to fit your vehicle. If you want to increase the width to a 12" you need to decide where you plan on putting the extra 2"? You can either split the 2" between the front and the back or you can put the 2" in either the outside or inside of the center. Bill My back spacing on the rear runs about an inch from the rear coilover. -
Jap Tin Have you any videos to post of you on track exploits? If so are they posted here?

Anyone using 16x12 diamond racing wheels???
v80z replied to gearheadstik's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I am using 16x10s all the way around. You can get a custom offset from them. Check your brake package as these wheels use 15" centers so they do not give the clearance of a true 16" wheel. -
Congrats and good luck. I have thought of that area myself as well as lake monticello of course anna is huge in comparison. I think it is a good move financially. It all depends on what you want. I like the idea of land and space. Of course not ever having had it I dont know what it would be like without the corner stores. There was that time down in East Carolina when we did all our grocery shopping at the Piggly Wiggly until they built the Walmart. Lotsa Porkchops. The lake and wakeboarding would be good. I would look for a place 15 -40 acres not on the lake if I was moving out of the burbs. Tractor Bush Hog Barn Stables animals etc. 4 wheelers.

I need a "Shorty" spark plug, Which one ???
v80z replied to mas8230's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Very interesting. I did not know they made shorty plugs. I bought the ebay headers. Heated and dimpled them to get clearance for the middle plugs. What is the best solution? Is there a header that fits and has room for sparkplugs? -
I was running a .580 lift scheidner. The cam was fine it was my setup. I was able to achieve a good wipe pattern but that is not the whole story. In order to do that out of ignorance I had run the rocker posts up very high with lashpads for a street cam like a .460 lift. Bad move. Not only is it the wipe but it is also the geometry between the the rocker and the valve stem/lashpad. Along with few other things I dont unerstand. What pound valve spring are you running. Again I dont klnow what the proper spring pressure is for your cam. What cam are you running. The last one I got was somewhere north of .600 lift. I called Schneider and they were able to recommend a lashpad thickness. Once I did that and set it up I could see the difference in the geometry vs what I had. Imagine the rocker jacked up on the post side vs a slight incline up to the arc of the rocker and then parallel to the head from the arc to the tip of the hardened end. Anyway after that all the ehat and friction symptoms went away. I am sure someone else can explain it better. Oh btw I think I have a scheider cam laying around and I have a stock one that definately is made out better metal shiny high nickel content? if you want Cam can be expensive and I have some varying lashpads and old rocker if you want some stuff to play with.

Well the car is to a point. It moves fairly reliably. It will turn the tires over on that solid axle no problem. It has a stumble when it transitions between 2bbl and 4 bbl I think. I am looking for someone to show me how and what to do to make this motor run better. I am sure alot has to do with all the various parts I have cobbled together and alot of unknowns and inexperience on my part. The only thing I have done is advance the distributor a few degrees against its rotation to try and fire it earlier to get the top end. 1970 sbc 350 .030 10.25:1 CR Stock Bottom stock heads screw ins 1.94 intakes 1.6 exhaust Crane race roller rockers 1.5s springs to support .550 lift edlebrock airgap edlebrock 750 vac 2ndary .508 lift solid .012 hot gap(will get cam card out and post full cam specs) hei with crane cd ignition grafted in. Anyway if there is anyone close to Yorktown Va that might have some time or have an orderly plan for going about this the smart way I would be most appreciative. Thanks

Thanks for all input. I got those cheap valve covers to seal usiing what is locally referred to as "Monkey Snot". 3M Weather stripping adhesive for autos. It comes in a red and white tube/box and is yellow in color. It cures to a rubbery finish. Probably and old trick but a very good one indeed. Sealed gasket to valve cover and gasket to head as they are 2 piece valve covers.
-
Ok The majority 99.99% of the oil is coming from the valve covers. I have done everything I can think of. I am going to sell these and get some others. What kind should I buy? I like the 2 piece for easy valve adjustment. Cast ALuminum?

So Pumped Went and got a pull starter and some Methanol. Fired right up first time. Front and one side fairing is cracked and needs repair/replace but all in all I am very satisfied. Ran it several hours Yesterday with many skidding 180s. I will post some video when it warms up

Well I guess I will learn how to be a crew chief as this kart is setup for my son. He is 9. This oughta be fun. I will post more as things happen. I bought this off ebay and am going to pick it up from the freight company in Richmond VA this Thursday. We have joined the local Kart Club that races at the local circle track. Fairly flat oval 4/10s of a mile. Racing Jr. 1 road course Purple Restrictor plate. http://www.hrkc.com http://www.langley-speedway.com
