AKWIKZ, What flywheel are you using? Stock RB26?
-
Thanks Matt! We figured those were the lift points, but I couldn't get my chains to work with them. We managed to get it out of the truck and onto the stand... so I'm okay now. I'm going to machine up some pieces that I can mount to those points to accomodate my hoist.
-
Well, I've got my RB26 home! Good news that. The problem I'm having now is picking hoist points. I'm a bit wary of lifting from the head. So right now she's sitting in the back of my truck with the hoist positioned to remove. Any suggestions?

I don't think that many of those people even had the appropriate insurance to live in that area. After the 95 'slide it was considered unsafe and many of the houses were, at one point, selling for sub $10,000. There was very little government oversight in that community (dictating distances from the cliff face, retaining walls...etc.) and, for some reason, the county was unable to force the residents to move. The county of Ventura had installed an 18 foot retaining wall (costing something like $500,000) that was COMPLETELY obliterated by the current disaster. Estimates on future retaining solutions have now exceeded 50 million dollars... just to HOPEFULLY prevent disasters like this in the future. Who's going to pay for that? It's a shame... many lives have been lost. IIRC many of the current residents were survivors of the 95 slide... go figure.

Indeed, especially considering their choice to use that engine as the basis for the 2007 GTR. I also believe they are currently using destroked versions of this motor (the VQ30) to power thier JGTC vehicles. In fact... last year (er...2003) thier Skylines were running VQ30's (twin turbo). So... the VQ35 has a bright, bright future.

Very true. However, for that money (and it's only my money talking here ), you could get yourself an RB26. Smog requirements aren't a player (assuming you have a pre 75 vehicle). I think that the S2000 engine would be a great swap if someone had the money and time to make it work. HybridZ, baby! That's what it's all about.
-
Light Armored Vehicles beware! Needing someone else to do the work could very well eat up a decent percentage of your 5 G's. If that is the case I would stick with a relatively straight forward swap (L28ET or V8 ). The L28 would be a direct bolt in affair and there are swap kits available for the V8's. I think your money would be put to better use with either of these engine choices. My RB swap will cost me roughly $7,000... and thats with ME handling all the labor. You can make equivalent power (~300hp) easily with the str8-6 or V8. Almost makes me wish I were doing a different, less costly, swap... almost!

Unfortunately there are many like him. We had guys do this all the time (albeit in a different way). They would 'injure' themselves or come down 'sick' so they didn't have to fly (do their job). Tactical DNIF'ing we would call it (DNIF = Duties Not to Include Flying). I can't tell you how many last minute deployments I, and others, had to take because of this. And that's the part that bugs me... they might not be going, but now someone else has to in thier stead.

First things first. Where do you live? Rural/small communities generally require less education and life experience than a big-city PD. The pay in these areas is also generally quite low... For example: *An officer in Moore, Oklahoma (RIGHT outside Oklahoma City) makes, on average $24-30k a year. *An officer in Ontario, California (an hour south/south-east'ish of Los Angeles) makes, on average $60-65k a year. I know that most departments here in sunny (not right now, damn it!) So Cal look highly upon a college degree and/or some military service. Life experience, a clean and professional work history and (sometimes) continuing education factor HEAVILY into a PD's decision to hire you. 1) First you must apply. 2) Once you pass this pre-screening you must take a physical aptitude test and, in some cases, a written exam (which, I have been told, occasionally doubles as a psych-eval). 3) You must sit in front of an oral-board where you will be bombarded, by a panel of department personnel, with all types of questions regarding your criminal record (or lack-thereoff), work history, reasons for desiring employment in the LE profession, and why YOU would be a good candidate for any position available. They will also ask you questions to see how you would 'initially', with no training, respond to certain situations that officers routinely encounter. 4) If you have aquired enough 'points' (you score points depending on how well you accomplish all of the above), AND they are seriously considering you as a candidate, they will do a background investigation. In some cases these investigations take up to a year to accomplish. If they complete your background and you are clean you might be hired. If you are hired you will have to... 5) Go to the police academy... an institution very similar to military boot camp. Something to think about: A department may have 2 positions available for officers. They will, routinely, recieve upwards of 300-400 applications. The list of applicants is narrowed down to around 20 (or so). You must be a better candidate than 18 other people. Do not be discouraged if you do not make it the first time you apply. Continue to learn, continue to work, stay dedicated to your goal. The next time you apply they might look at what you've been doing since your last application. Put yourself in a position to show them that you have been moving FORWARD in your life.

I was quoted between $500 and $700 to have my car media blasted (walnut shells IIRC). Car needed to be suitably stripped down to ensure that old paint could be removed from jams and inner panels. Sand blasting is ok but, as I understand it, has the potential to heat, and thus distort, thinner guage panels. One thing to consider: if you live in an area that gets quite humid or are near salty air (which you are1 ) you might think about having the bare metal treated with Metal Prep (or suitable equivalent). I, however, am not a paint and body guy... so someone else can chime in and confirm that.

Awww man... I wanna be the talk of the Z community!

I, myself, will be joining the RB crowd soon! Picked up my R33 RB25 tranny today! I am also very happy with my RB choice and can't wait to get it going!

Tampa Street Racing scene, rented vette with nitrous and etc!

Very choppy for me... kinda annoying. Pretty cool, though -
I don't give them money, either. They hang out at all the freeway off-ramps here in So-Cal. In the Air Force we used to go to the shelters and make food, donate clothes, build shelters...etc. I liked doing that sort of thing. My current employer 'adopts' families and helps in that way.
-
Calagary? Not sure if I have the resources to do the shipping. HOWEVER... we are looking to get $1200 (including the Greddy Intake Manifold).
-
Not exactly an advertisement, but I might be straddling the line here a bit... Fairly soon (mid-january) I will have a spare RB25DET motor on my hands (no transmission). It has the Greddy intake manifold on it, wiring harness, ecu, and it is in good condition (I will post pics when can). Is there anyone out there who might be interested in this motor? I would like to give someone the opportunity to acquire this motor as a whole unit before I decide to part it out.

My initial reaction to this story was not sorrow, pity, despair...etc. It seems, to me, like this is less an 'opportunity' to honor the homeless and more an avenue for the 'do-gooders' to be praised. DO NOT GET ME WRONG. There is nothing wrong with giving of yourself to help others who, perhaps, may be less fortunate. I, personally, have a problem with those who are selfish in thier selflessnes.

RB links, it seems, are hard to come by. There are several individuals on here who have installed, or are installing, RB motors in thier Z cars. I am picking up my RB25DET in January (ignore my sig) and have been scouring the internet trying to find information on parts, availability and information. Don't be sorry for ranting. This is probably a very critical decision for you that may have lasting ramifications in your life. Nobody here can tell you what to do... you ultimately make the choices in your own life that define who you are. Myself, and others who offer advice, may understand this more than you think. PLEASE do not take me the wrong way. I wish you the best. Curiosity is understandable. I'm not sure of your age, but have you discussed this with your parents? What are their feelings? If I may be so bold... what answers do you seek? What do you hope to accomplish by contacting your biological donors?
-
Bud...I don't think you'll ever get your questions answered. I had a very good friend go through this exact thing recently (okay, not exact). She felt she needed some closure and wanted to know why she was abandoned by a drugged out mother and abusive (not sexually) father. She felt that her bio parents were probably good people and that circumstances might be different after 20 years. Well... she found them and spent a year trying to be the 'daughter they did, but never did, have'. They were horrible people and were only interested in capitalizing off of her successes (She makes GOOD money). They felt entitled to her money and for some reason she felt entitled to hand it over to them. Eventually she wisened up ($20,000 poorer) and realized that WHO SHE IS had nothing to do with them. She had been temporarily blinded by a fairy tale idea that being taken away from her bio parents was some Afternoon Special-like mistake. What she has come to realize since is that she had a loving, caring, understanding and wonderful set of parents who were everything the biological parents were not. I don't know you or your situation, but I hope you think about this VERY carefully. Sometimes NOT knowing can be the best thing. Knowing that you were abused will change what in your life? Please, please,please... I watched my friend go through this... weigh this choice carefully, discuss it with your parents, talk to a councelor, but don't rush into this. You are talking about this... so you must have some reservations. A doctor can diagnose you with schizophrenia without knowing your family history.
