  1. Nah, those are just excuses. It's not impossible to make a car sell that isn't "crappy". I think Mitsu and Suby got it right with the rally twins. And you can have speed and mileage in the same package, just not in a 4000 lb car. Lotus Elise pulls 12's in the 1/4 and gets ~30 mpg. My $.02
  2. That swap is cool. Just as cool as a big-block. The body needs some work though...and maybe add the "attessa" awd PopNWood- I think what he meant by "high tech" is the variable valve timing/duration, oil-cooled pistons, computer controlled fuel-injection, distributorless coil-on-plug ignition, electronic turbo management, use of composite materials, and also a host of modern emissions devices. Believe it or not, modern science has taken us a long way since the 1940s. BTW I don't know of any pushrod 4cyl cars in mass production today on another note... You are a very wise man. Well put!
  3. That's exactly what I thought! I hate how heavy "performance" cars are getting these days. It's just lazy/cheap engineering in order to turn a profit. My jaw dropped when I read that the new Mini Cooper weighs 2800+ lbs. That is twice as heavy as the original Mini.....let me repeat that.....TWICE AS HEAVY. WTF? My opinion is if Mitsubishi can make a 4-door, 4wd, sports sedan, with all the comforts (not to mention stellar performance) for under $40k, and it weighs under 3200 lbs, then Ford should be able to. Heck, listen to Bastaad, even Dodge got the weight right with the SRT4. For $40k, I'd buy an EVO MR and add the Vishnu kit to it. That would match or beat the new GT500 in accelleration, and STOMP it in handling, for roughly the same price. Plus you'd have sedan-comfort and snow-traction! As for smog laws, Mikelly is totally right. If you tune correctly you should have no problem passing emissions. I tuned my 240z (with an L-series and twin SUs) on the exhaust analyzer at my shop and it passes CA smog sniffer test (even though it doesn't have to), with no cats, no EGR, and no air injection! Personally I don't mind the smog regulations...I like breathing clean air. If you disagree, take a trip to Los Angeles
  4. Reminds me of that episode of "Futurama" when Fry defeats the giant brain with his poorly written book. "I'm the greetist. Now I'm leaving, for no raisin"
  5. That's a wonderful piece. It's very touching, and true. I feel bad for the guys who are stuck out in the damn desert for the holidays, that really sucks. It makes you appreciate their sacrifice. So I say: Merry Christmas! And Happy Holidays!
  6. Anyone seen the new "Veyron"? 1001 metric horsepower quad-turbo W16 engine (yes 16 cylinders and four turbos). Car goes 250 mph. Awsome.
  7. Since you're a mountain biker, you should check out the trails in Marin (birthplace of the sport). Mt. Tamalpais has some of the best riding in the country. Marin is across the GG bridge from SF. Definitely hit up "Repack", its the trail where the first ever mountain bike race was held.
  8. I heard in SCCA ITE that an EVO8 is dominating the class right now. Apparently this guy has thrown "cubic dollars" at his EVO, which is why he's winning, lol. Personally I like the EVO better than the STI. I'm a fairly big guy (6' 3" 205 lbs), and sitting in the EVO I felt more comfortable than I did in the STI. Plus the EVO looks better IMHO, and has more aftermarket support. But with the dramatic cost difference, the STI is a better buy.
  9. As others have said, it does depend on the programming. For example, the el-cheapo grocery getter is going to have the cheapest, simplist ABS unit installed (probably with a crappy 8 bit chip and probably only control front to rear bias, and be programed for safety only). And most people's experiences are with these systems, leaving a bad impression on the driver. However, like JohnC said, the high end units on an NSX or S2000 for example, are very good. You can't compare a Chevy Cavalier's ABS with a Ferrari 360 Modena's ABS.
  10. Right, so you go pay a bunch of money to hire a "professional" who is, in fact, a pimply faced teenager..........with a degree lol
  11. That is stunning...great work man! Your "before" pictures look exactly like my current 240z, so that gives me hope that my car can someday look as good as yours (lol, I wish). BTW, what's the name of the paint color you used, its gorgeous.
  12. As far as I have seen, cars with ABS always have recorded better stopping distances in road tests than cars without it. A good example is the Saleen S7, with no ABS it has very poor stopping distances for such a high end exotic. For example the Viper, with ABS, has much better stopping distances even though it is much heavier than the S7. Personally though, I prefer the pedal feel of a car without ABS.
  13. Hey how do you drive an instruction book anyhow? ("manual") LOL Just messing with you. Congrats Zguy95135! Now you can drive just about any car out there. You sound like a fast learner. I learned to shift in a '86 Jeep Comanche pickup truck. It was pretty easy to drive but it took me about a week to get it. Way to go!
  14. Hey Jeff If you can find the linkage from a 260 in the JY it should work, if I'm not mistaken it is the same as the linkage in my '73 240 (both used the same crappy flat-top carbs) all you have to do is adjust the little "rod ends" on the linkage by unscrewing them a bit to compensate for the distance. That's what I did when I swapped in my SU's. Hope this helps.
  15. 1 fast z, Are you saying that the f54 is not siamesed? Becuase that conflicts with all the published specs on these blocks (including manufacturer data, shop manuals, etc). Why would Nissan re-engineer their block to be WEAKER when they planned a turbo application? I've never cracked open an f54 myself, but maybe some of the turbo guys here could chime in.

    350z?

I've heard of 350z's making 315 hp with only headers, exhaust and intake. And a comparison test of the 350z in R&T showed it to be very close to a porsche 911 on the track. Not bad at all! (but for $35k I'd rather have an Evo).
  17. I don't know about which block is stronger when overbored, but with a stock bore the turbo block is stronger.
  18. The rubber gloves always seem to break on me, so I got a pair of "mechanix" gloves. They're leather and the best part is they protect my knuckles from busting open when my hand slips (which always happens lol). "if you own more than two cars that don't run, you might be a hotrodder" "if you spend more money on tools, than on parts, you might be a hotrodder" "if your neighbors constantly complain about you running your open-headered car at 3am, you might be a hotrodder"
  19. I may be Crazy280, but that guy is just CRAZY! If white people are all in a secret plot to kill black people, I must not have gotten the memo. His whole speach sounded eerily similar to the "Elders of Zion" except white people instead of Jews.
