  1. Thanks Scott for coming to my defense. Remember guys I have the last, and best of the 305's. When the tpi motors were finally replaced by the LT1 in the f-bodies and Corvettes in the early nineties the 5.0 tpi was at the top of GM's port fuel injection developement curve. The motor in my car bears little resemblance to the early carbed and tbi motors of the seventies and eighties. I'm very pleased with the "little" mill in my Z. I don't drag race, this is a street car, a GT. The big heafty bags full of low end torque are a blast on the street. And I still believe GM made the best visual presentation of the sbc in the tpi. Did I mention that I got 21 to 24 mpg on my trip to Phoenix last mounth? Still, would I recommend the motor to other swappers? Over five years ago when I was picking out a motor I was looking for a 350, a tpi 350. The LT1's were still too expensive then. I couldn't find a nice clean 350 tpi. I wanted a JY motor that was ready to drop in without rebuilding. They were all beat up and over priced. A reputable yard steered me to the motor that is in my car now. It had low miles, was well cared for and it was a bargain. I've never been disapointed. Still, would I recommend the motor to other swappers? A year after I had my car running I did my second sbc efi swap into a S30. This time I used a '95 f-body LT1. Wow, what a motor. While the low end torque is about the same (seat of the pants dyno) as the LT1, my motor runs out of breath at about 4500 rpms. The LT1 pulls hard all the way past red line and into the rev limiter at 6200. Don't tell Steve Cameron that I know this. I'll never pull the 305 out of my Z. But if I was doing it today...
  2. Hey Rick, What are your plans for headlights in the YZ nose?
  3. Looks great Rick. Glad I could help in a small way.
  4. Sorry Davy, I just wasn't thinking. I'll move this to a new thread.
  5. Picked up the car this afternoon. I haven't had a chance to try it on the freeway yet. Any freeway is at least 15 miles from Rio Vista. I'll have at least 10 hours of freeways tomorrow though. Driving it around town I noticed immediately that the exhaust note has lost it's edge. Nothing comes without a price.
  6. ...if anybody gives a rip! I've had a pair of Flowmasters on my Z ever since the unfortunate, uh, 'uncanny resemblance' incident. They have always sounded great throughout the RPM range, ending with an intimidating high pitched howl at redline. Alas, I have a long road trip planned and the truth is that in fifth gear at legal highway speeds it drones in the car. After a couple hours it becomes too much. Fortunately my small tank requires gas stops every three hours. Still... At the San Leandro meet/Kit Car show I scrutinized Joey's LS1 two-into-one exhaust. A pair of small glass-pacs under the floor, then a 'Y' bringing the two pipes into one and a single conventional muffler in the rear. It sounds great and he claims it's very quiet on the freeway. A very, very nice car and an extremely clean swap. So, taking a note from Joey, my Z went under the knife, err, torch today. The whole center section is going to be redone and a pair of those same baby glass-pacs will be installed. This time true mandrel bends will replace the only 'somewhat' sloppy part of the original system. The flame wielder was given instructions to tuck it a little tighter this time as well. I get tired of dragging my butt over speed bumps and I refuse to raise the car even a smidge. The work didn't start until late this afternoon so the car is having a sleep-over on the rack. It should be finished tomorrow. I'll let you all know how I like it when I get it back. Anybody coming to the Vacaville meet at the end of the month can judge for themselves.
  7. I have a painted fiberglass dash cap as well. It's painted the body color. Occasionally I get a reflection off the inside of the windshield. Kind of looks like a blue full moon. I don't find it to be a problem.
  8. The "Buggy" at the top actually has a Porsche mill!
  9. No warranty on dry rot though... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rare-Dunebuggy-Porche-Engine-MUST-SEE_W0QQitemZ4580502214QQcategoryZ6737QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  10. Bet this is one hybrid nobody here ever thought of. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/The-World-Famous-Red-Stiletto-Art-Shoe_W0QQitemZ4581515268QQcategoryZ6737QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  11. Sounds like a good excuse for camber plates to me.
  12. Right-on Charlie! I remember your early posts when you were just starting the project. Then the big gap when we didn't hear from you. Glad to see you've pushed through and got it on the road after all these years. You should be inspiration for Alex!
  13. If you are as creative as Terry you can make your own brackets (props to Terry). Otherwise I'd say pick up a junk yard pump and gut it. You now have the advantage of a cheap A/C bracket as well. Check resent threads.
  14. I've have had real good luck with GM junk yard relays. Nice quality piece. Find a late model FI car and check the firewall. You should find at least two or three per car. They come with a metal mounting bracket, are sealed units, and have nice water tight plugs. Make sure you cut the wires and get those too. Best part is you can get them for about a buck each.
  15. I hear that too, curious. I only know how it fits on my car. If you'd like to come up to Rio sometime and poke around with a tape measure you're welcome to it. If you're buying custom wheels (that can't be returned!) it would pay to do a lot of measuring first.
  16. FYI: I run 15x10 rear rims with 4 1/2" backspacing with 305/50's and coilovers. I have about 1/4" clearance to the spring and about 1/2" to the fender. As metioned though, I have modified the fender lip for a more "street" look. The front fenders are from the SubtleZ kit. I have 265/50/15's up front with the same backspacing and could fit a wider tire if I wanted but not on those 8" rims
  17. Oops, maybe I got a special deal and didn't know it. Terry, The SubtleZ fenders and airdam match up to the stock headlight buckets. So the only blending you will need to do is the SubtleZ airdam ends to the lower section of the G-nose.
  18. You can use the JTR crossmember spacers and get another half inch of clearance out of both the crossmember and the rack. Don't know if that's enough for you but it's a cheap and easy mod to make without any cutting and welding. And if it's no help they come out just as easy as they go in. No mods to the steering shaft are needed. The only change to the suspension is that it raises (or is that lowers?) the front roll center slightly. That can be compensated for by relocating the LCA pivot points up by one half to three quarters of an inch. If this is a street car the LCA pivot mod really isn't necessary. It's unlikely you will notice any change in the cars behavor with the just the crossmember spacers. https://shell7.tdl.com/~jags/Pages/Parts_DAT200.html DAT-105 $20 for a pair
  19. All it takes is a little talent. Very little when you consider that even I did it with an MSA airdam. Just ask John to sell you about 10 inches of each side of the SubtleZ airdam to make the transition to the G-nose piece. He'll lay up just the ends for you for much less than the cost of the whole piece. Mount the G-nose and then just nibble away material from the SubtleZ airdam ends a little at a time until you get a good fit between them and the G-nose. I used a Makita angle grinder and a good resporator and I did it in about two and a half hours. Then glue-glass-sand-fill-sand-fill-sand-fill-sand... Here's what mine looks like.
  20. Excellent idea. The problem is real estate. It's tough enough to fit a turbo or supercharger in a V8Z. Add four more cylinders under the hood and you're out of room. Maybe in Chelle's stretched GTO you might have the space. Hey, is she thinking...?
  21. Where's that "Ripped off at Pick-n-Pull" thread? Jump in the van. We're all going to Roseville!
  22. Ver cool. I envy you non-Californians who can mod post '75 cars without the smog Nazis coming down on you. Have fun and keep the hood. It fits. It soooo fits.
