  1. I liked the Z3 when they had the hatchback. It looked like a shoe, but I liked it. Now it looks like a lot like what the new Z's should have looked like.
  2. Don' sell yourself short, there's nothing wrong with what you said. Personally I'd try to adjust the idle mixture first, and get the timing right before changing springs. A richer mixture would tend to effect how timing is felt, and might very well be the fix for this problem. He might have crazy cams and hugely ported heads, I don't know.
  3. That ought to get you the longblock worked out for your 500hp monster. I would like to recommend a 350 to start, then you could go 383 in two shakes of a lambs tail. Why sell yourself short from the beginning? Good luck.
  4. 1806 AVS 650. It should not be backfiring because of wrong needles, and springs if you have the stock ones in there on a 355. I noticed several things with mine. 1. I had to return the first one because the "adjustable vacuum secondaires" were nothing more than a flap which opens a via engine suction which helps with transition from primary to secondary opening (they overlap quite a bit so I bet this is more of a bandaid than anything else. If that flap is not freely moving, I.e. you push it with your finger and it sticks where you pushed it, then you need that fixed. That might explain "less power". 2. Backfiring in the carb could be lean OR rich! The idle jets of this carb are huge! In fact my 350 idle couldn't be set below 800. The primaries sealed tight but the idle jets were letting so much air/fuel in that the engine idles at 800 minimum. These have a direct and very noticeable effect on light throttle performance (up to 1/4 pedal). I could get mine to backfire when I inadvertantly did not set the idle jets correctly. This should fix your prob. Adjust base timing to 6BTDC, remove vac advance plug ALL vac leaks and make sure the bolts are tight and verify you actually have a gasket, set idel to 600-800. To set the idle jets: 1. Adjust the timing if necessary such that your engine runs 600-800rpm steady and still gives yourself some adjustment with the idle screw. 2. Turn one idle mixture screws in (clockwise) until the RPM drops 50, readjust idle to same as before and do it again for the other one. (each side seperately). You're done. If it drops immediately you're too lean go to step 3. 3. Turn one idle screw out (counterclockwise) and the rpm will rise, adjust the idle in 50prm incriments back to baseline until turning the screw out does not add to RPM. Then repeat for the other side. 4. Turn one idle mixture screw in until the rpm drops 50. Reset idle to base and adjust the other side till it drops 50. You're done. 5. If you still have trouble, you may need to get the adjustment kit and try different needles and seats and springs. It is VERY easy to do small changes because the needles are accessable from the top of the carb through some simple plates that bolt on. 6. If you tried different settings and it still fails you could call edelbrock technical (see their website), they will help if you are patient and can get anything but a busy signal. But if you try often you'll get in. This is most likely a timing problem, but something could be wrong with your valvetrane also. ALSO MAKE SURE YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRES ARE CORRECTLY ROUTED!!!
  5. $3500... that's a ZZ4 longblock with the intake if that much. Would be nice. Or if you like used you could get the LT1 mated to a 5 or 6 speed out of a wrecked Camaro or Firebird from the mid 90's less than 50k for less than that.
  6. Yeah, I know what you mean, it was nearly 45 degrees here last night, and now it's more like 65, Soooo cooold, I had to wear a jacket this morning just to keep my arms comfortable. It frosted once this winter, killed 1/2 my plants that have been there and growing for years! Dang! Needless to say the grass is dead... well that and I haven't watered it for a year and we only had like 1 inch this season. Too much dang sun, it's like you can't go outside anymore without seeing it all day! Should you have to wear suntan lotion in the middle of the dead of winter? Here? yes.
  7. Yes my second choice was a Pantera, only it's a Ford powerplant and I figured it'd get crappy mileage.
  8. If you don't mind 336 days of rain a year.
  9. Good gas mileage, good suspension, Awsome power, Comfortable (even for a 6'3 210pounder) and mad they look nice. Ok I'm selling it and getting a Mini Pooper or about twice the cost or PT Loser for about even up? Come on!
  10. Agreed, I had to tilt it in and it took about 3 hours the first time, and about 1 hour the second time, and about that long the 3rd 4th and 5th times. Mallets are important for this.
  11. I welded my own shift stik also. I went to Alaska in 1997, very nice in late May! Sun doesn't really ever set, no night. Strange. Saw a bunch of glaciers, Alaska roads are great, but Canada's roads suck. No offense Canadian subscribers. Canada is beautiful too, very ruff country especially in the Yukon, rains a lot.
  12. If you "drive by wire" like most of the new cars are going, then you don't need to sync anything, if the two engines are similar the pedal sensor would simply send the same signal to both units, of course if they were automatic, he'd probably prefer to use paddle shifting or "stick" shifting and disable the automatic shifting because they would really offset the load if one was in 1st and the other shifted to 2nd. Of course if one engine had a problem or fell out of spec you might get some squirlly stuff going on. Also, one engine may be sharing a greater load than the other depending on it's condition, which wouldn't be "felt" if it was within a reasonably close spec. My theory, don't know if it was done or would work, but might. Let's try it with a Z. two LS1 V8's Two manual trannys. You could easily link the throttle cables to the pedal even though one would be longer than the other, they would actuate the same distance. And The shifter would only require a remote shift linkage for both trannys although the difficult part would be to fit all this under a 240z.
  13. My only objection to a 305 is that for the same displaement you could have a SBF and be smaller lighter and still mate to that 5 or 6 speed tremic tranny. I got a 350 because it was so standard, and if I wanted more power I can make it a turbo or blown 383 and get 500+lbs of torque without the extra hassle or weight of a BBC. Of course a 400+ SBC would be nice too.
  14. I think mine is now tuned enough to talk turkey. 27mpg hiway @65 (no showing off, light throttle to enter the freeway) 19mpg city and limited hiway (driving to work daily always showing off especially to get on the hiway and to test the secondaries for mechanical soundness) Still can't make it a week without messing up what a non-showing off test would be. 16mpg pure city and showing off Engine I have a pre-LT1 350 with edelbrock performer heads, edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock avs 650cfm carb set 3/4 turn out both sides from "best lean" for idle otherwise stock nominal jets and rods. Base timing set at 14 Spark gap .035 Vac advance on full manifold vacuum MSD stock weight advance. 2000 miles all new. Exhaust sanders 1.75" shorty headers to 2.5" dual exhaust to 3" single exhaust through a high perf cat, a spiral baffle resonator and a Delta 40 muffler. (Still loud) Tranny LS1 T56 adapted to said engine. .50 6th Diff = stock R180 3.36:1 Tires = Stock steel 14"x5" rims with goodyear standard P185 75 R14's. Misc No body mods. Clean paint. You?
  15. I have this clutch set and it's fine, I have a massive steel flywheel and the RPM drops about what I would have expected based on my experiance with other cars. I did however once get a clutchset that chattered like a B***** it turned out that the "rebuilt" clutch they sold me was bad and I got another one free, that one was just a stock clutch, so maybe you just got a raw deal on the one you had.
  16. And there is something to be said about economy IF you are using this as your daily driver, but definately something to be said for a known running engine in your hand. Use it for now put some miles on it and if you blow something, nothing lost.
  17. Come on guys, let's list some really good spankings, where you walked a chump or where some junior was running at the mouth and had his toung handed to him after it hit the ground. I can start us off with a nice one. I was on my way to the Gym and this Burgendy Mustang (didn't look like a standard ford color more like metalic purple, but could have been) with a 3" hood scoop dual exhaust tips obvious cat-back rumble and sounding like he messed with his timing was next to me. I usually sound like I'm flooring it even when I am barely pressing the pedal 'cause my exhaust is obnoxious. Anyway I get behind him as we move toward a red light and he jumps to the next lane over. I just pull up to the light and he's there with his "spanking" new car rolling on 18+ rims, sounding like a million bucks. I'm here with my car which is about 1/3 the cost and 33 years older. With my 14" x 175 black painted steel wheels and yet he's creeping toward the intersection like he's trying to get a head start. I just ignore him and when the light turns green to make a left he practically launches into the intersection and has to put it in reverse to get back, so now I get that feeling like I want to teach this poser an old school lesson. As the light turns green I don't even sweat it, but just roll through 1st he's got about even with me and no doubt sweating bullets 'cause he has nothing on me even in 1st, I pop into 2nd and give it half throttle, in about 1 second I'm a car length ahead and you can hear him redlining the thing so I punch it and I'm abotu 5 car lengths ahead of him and going 60 before he can say WTF was that? I get to my turn and pull into the left turn lane, and stop, then I hear him screem by like he's going 80. IT gave me such a rush I was able to beat my max reps on just about everything I did that day.
  18. Here in Cali, it's 7am-7pm only, then they have the right to call the cops. the cops come over and give you a stern lecture. Then they usually get more disturbed by the caller than the callee.
  19. I still say Inventor/Autocadd is the "big brother" to the "little sister" Solidworks.
  20. Yes, another ton of comments this week, it must be the color and relative shininess, although it's far from showroom condition and I just got another ding on the driver door like someone must have dented their door making it. I'm so glad it gets good enough gas mileage to make it my daily driver. 18 city 27 hyway.
  21. Or set cars on fire... *cough*~French~*cough*.
  22. 1 thumbs down would quickly get 1 finger up in return, I'm quick with that finger. But I wouldn't do anything but hang my head in shame if they negatively commented on the black steel 14" rims or slightly worn bumpers.
