modifying tranny mounts to allow install of ls1
dr_hunt replied to 1 tuff z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
I don't know about the mounts and stuff, but I have to go over the fender and I have made a new hole in my cherry picker to get another 6 inches, still didn't help. Over the fender works if the car is high enough off the ground. -
Aren't those JE pistons a work of art? Really nice, makes me feel good all over!

Might be, let's talk apples and apples. Depends on the axles, I believe that the D44 came in 27, 29 and 30 spline versions depending on the application and year. Certainly the 29 and 30 spline version are the ones to use and the 27 spline is one to stay away from. Dirt doesn't hook like slicks on pavement and if somebody was going to do a solid axle conversion then it would seem appropriate to get the best rear available unless they just had one laying around. I've blown several D44 to pieces even in the dirt in my 4x4. A 400 lb-ft torque engine, which is common for a modded V8 with a 700R4 or 200 4R trans and a 4.11 rear diff will generate 4571 lb-ft of torque on the axle without taking into consideration the torque multiplication factor of the converter, which for a good high stall converter can reach 2. So if you use the light duty 27 or even the 29 spline axle in the D44 it probably won't last very long, whether it is a light car or not, cause the torque will never change only the time it is loaded to the maximum value will, which will decrease with time sooner than if it were in a heavier car, since the lighter car will start moving sooner and travel quicker. When I got my 9 inch for the Monte from Moser engineering, I bought their super duty axles, which are mondo and the diameter of the axle is based on the torque output of the engine only! Ditto for the axles in the z, based on engine torque not vehicle weight. So, if we are talking apples and apples then I'd say pick the rear based on the amount of torque and HP you plan on trying to plant, not on preference of diff's and what may or may not be the most reliable while offering the best availability of parts and goodies. Of course we could just do a winters quick change and eliminate all doubt and have gear chang capability in 30 minutes or less!

The 4x4 guys say that the dana 44 is good for about 400 HP in stock form. The 9 inch ford is almost bulletproof. My 3800 lb monte has launched with the left front in the air several hundred times over the last 3 years with a 9 inch. The z launches with both wheels in the air and has stock resplined axles, also 9 inch. The 8 inch Ford rear parts are expensive, the 8.8 has come along way and is a real nice piece, the 9 inch will always be king of the hill but costs alittle extra HP to run than say the 12 bolt which is another fine choice. All of this is my opinion only. Your going to spend some $$ anyway, I'd go with the 8.8, 12 bolt or the 9 inch, with any of these you won't go wrong.

Went to a local auction cause they had a 9 inch ford rear end complete out of a '67 Ford Bronco and I wanted it. It was 4.10 geared and posi to boot, I checked it out yesterday before the auction. Picked it up for $70. Building a mud bog truck out of my '33 dodge truck and I have a mini spool for the 9 inch and a spare carrier, so the posi carrier unit is avail to hybrid z guys contemplating the 9 inch conversion. The factory ford posi is completely rebuildable. The real deal was a complete running gear out of a 1980 Chevy 1 ton 4x4. I got the Dana 60 front, Dana 70 posi rear, NP205 transfer case, and 4 speed trans all for $40. I already have the dodge truck, going to fab a frame out of 1.625 tubing, build custom ladder bars front and back, run dana 44 up front and the 9 inch in back, suspend it with coil over shocks, run a NP208 TC on the back of a powerglide with a transbrake. Power via a freshly built 350 chevy, AFR 220 heads, big .670 solid roller, 12.5:1's, dart block, eagle crank, eagle rods. I bought some nice 16x15 Weld race aluminum wheels, 17x15 paddle tires so it's about ready to go play. Should weigh in around 1700 lbs or so.

I did a search and I think this IS the information you are looking for; http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=104236&highlight=fairlady+diff I typed in "fairlady diff" in the search function and voila, there you have it.

Second thought, kind of humorous. "MAYBE IT'S DYING TO BECOME A 406!" Ha ha!!!!!!!!

I think Tony has it right, ignition module.

Don't you moderators and members just love guys like sanzoneb. Azguy, See I have posted regarding just this type of nonsense already, trying to be helpfull and this is what I get, no respect. I bit my tongue twice, but here goes. Typically Ben, if you ask questions that have already been covered it is my experience that nobody responds or they jump all over you. It kind of depends on your attitude. Anyway, a quick search brought the following: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=67857&highlight=v8+300+zx and 17 others, just depends on what you type in for search words. This information can guide you to uncover what your looking for more quickly than just posting a topic that has been well documented, pictures as well. It can also point you to directly contacting somebody who has already done what your thinking of doing or, are trying to do. I think it is a great project and you should try to do it. But,IMHO, Ben, I think you'd be better off looking and posting on some other site, maybe even your own site, honestly nobody here can help you, especially with your attitude. It been said you can have it; 1. Fast 2. Easy 3. Cheap Pick any two ???? Others have been banned for this type of behavior, you can be too, just keep it up, rest assured somebody is watching.

Well, I have two houses, so we'll go with the one in town first. You know your in beaner ghetto when; 1. the monte's and impala's have chrome or gold wire spoke wheels that cost twice as much as the car they are on. 2. Nobody wears a shirt or pants, just boxers with a gold chain around the neck, many tatoos, must be cool. I'm not cool, so don't go there. 3. Police come down the street with siren's on 3 or 4 times a night all weekend long. 4. Mexican music plays loudly all night long even when they are all passed out. 5. Whaaassssssuuuupppp is on the menu at the mexican restaurant. 6. Everyone calls you "Bro" even if your white. 7. Instead of trying to race you the lowriders pull up next to you and want to have jumping contests. The house in the boonies where I spend 85% of my time. 1. I know all the neighbors for 40 miles in any direction and they number less than 30. 2. The only music I hear is the elk bugeling in the fall, had one doing it tonight, or coyotes. 3. There is never a party and the bar here is called the "NO SCUM ALLOWED SALOON"!!!! 4. Nobody races except on horses 5. The cops don't come out here, even if I need them.

So let me tell you the difference between volunteer and draft

Maybe it wasn't a bike ride john, I mean sore asses and all, well, it looks kind of funny doesn't it? Maybe it was a ruse and the rest of the group doesn't want to talk about it anymore cause they had to take it bent over. I know bosses like that. Peter, guy at a place I used to work, kinda weird, knew him in college at NMIMT. He and I were talking one day in the hall and our bitch woman boss came walking down the hall and instead of going around us, made us move and went inbetween us while he was talking about a project to me and was in mid sentence. She interrupted him and said "When your finished BS-ing come see me". She walked down the hall and Peter said "Hey Biitch, the next time you cut me off like that I'll kill you!" She hauled buns to her office and locked the door, called her boss, he went the other way and filed a harrassment claim with HR. Needless to say, she had to apologize in front of everyone and he got away with it, while the whole company swore he was going to go postal any day. Same corporate crap, different day. If you **** in the box, can prove that they got the present with pic's, I'll paypal you $20 also. Of course, I'd get another job first. -
Best news I've had all year! Show me the boobies!

My boy shot a nice 6x6 bull on Sunday morning. The bull was all by himself, just sauntering up the canyon while we laid in wait to ambush him when he got to the ridge we were on. He got it in one shot from his .260 remington in a model 7 youth that I had rebarreled with a 24 inch hart SS light weight contour barrel with custom muzzle brake from my buddy Frank Combs.

I wonder if they are walking telling everyone "I have a woody"!!

That's nice, real nice!

Not to mention that Imelda Marcos will be bidding on it, so he'll have to shell out some bucks if he really wants it!

You won't save anything and you won't run any faster without it unless you run a magneto. Bottom line is that the coil takes the primary voltage and multiplies it by the number of turns in the coil. If you have fuel pump and distributor drawing amps, then the voltage across the battery drops and so does the coil output and thus the fire to the plugs. Simple example math, 12 volts primary voltage, generates 50,000 volts at the plug (HP coil). That translates to a factor of 4166, increase. So, say your running without an alternator and your voltage across the battery drops to say 11 volts, that means that you now have 45,833 volts at the plug instead of 50,000. But in reality when you run an alternator you have about 14 volts in the system and without one you will never have more than 12.5 volts and that is with a fully charged battery. So if your running a magneto, fine, if not, then keep the alternator, you'll be faster and more consistent.

You handled it correctly IMO. Seriously though I'd get new pins from the manufacturer if it were me. I've had similar experience with other companies. An old man told me once; "When you take somebody down a notch or two by badmouthing them, it doesn't necessarily raise you up a notch or two." Sorry you had a bad experience, I'm sure he's human, **** happens, you aren't the first this has happened to and won't be the last, whether it some other company or not. Get that motor going and post a timeslip would you?!!
