  1. I think the bolt on crowd is kind of hot rodding, but not the purist. In the old days, we took stock stuff and modified it, ported it, tried this and that although we did have bolt on's, just not many, we just took it farther around the bend in a personal custom way to max the PERFORMANCE of whatever it was, be it bike, car, truck, whatever. We did it without $$$, but alot of thinking and tinkering. A lot like most of you guys on this forum with all your ideas, trials, tribulations and what works, don't work, hauls butt, drags butt.
  2. Yup, you guessed it Brodix BB1's, checking the paperwork, the intake port clean up has already been done. I think these are a little larger than the race rite heads, like 310 cc intakes or so, 2.25 inch intake valves. The story goes; My buddy raymond had a 70 chevelle SS 454 with numbers matching LS6 motor, alum heads, 400 turbo trans, 12 bolt posi. Did a frame off resto and had the rear end rebuilt by currie, the trans redone and I took the engine apart and he sent it to nickens bros. to get bored, crank turned, rods resized, heads done with new guides, valves, springs, retainers. He had ordered the engine kit through them to restore it as it was factory, I believe 450HP, but Nickens said that they could get a hydraulic flat tappet that would be better for the street than the solid that it had in it. Well, went to pick up the parts and low and behold the alum LS6 heads were nowhere to be found. Raymond about kicked some butt right then and there. Soooooooo, Nickens says it'll find some LS6 alum heads to replace those and fix them up right. 6 weeks later they call, can't find any, probably not for the cheap price they wanted to pay anyway, so they offered the Brodix heads and to dyno the engine for free in exchange. Raymond agreed and voila there they are. I install it in the chevelle, he then sells it 6 mo later, the buyer wants nothing to do with the engine, he pulls it and it sits in the floor for 8 years now collecting dust.
  3. Bondo, has to stick to work, so the surface has to be super clean and rough, and if it's too thick it doesn't cure and solidify properly, which results in cracks, either cause it didn't cure or it didn't stick. Really it was never intended to be applied very thick and was explained to me by a really good bodyman Jim Stagnetti.
  4. Yup, that's been my motto, for years, I stole it before you did so it's mine. Oh, never mind, I think I'll take #45 instead.
  5. Yup, even if you own a toy gun in calif, it's illegal. What isn't illegal in calif is probably a more pertinent question. Psssss, I heard that they are going to make sex illegal in calif. soon, so beware!
  6. GM has a tach filter on the "85 Monte Carlo SS's, and probably other cars as well, seems your problem isn't as "new" as you might think. Actually my '84 had the same filter. If it's burning through the rotor, then the rotor is "junk" to start with or you have too much resistance between the coil and the plug, which includes the plug. Don't rule out the plugs. There is no such think as too hot of a coil since the spark follows the path of least resistance, which in your case is through the rotor. A hotter coil only exacerbates the problem, but the problem is still in it's original form of too much resistance in the path from the distributor cap to the plug itself. With the HEI you want to run brass or copper contact caps, not the cheapo aluminum contacts. I'd change plugs to a different brand/type and try that first, before ditching the system entirely. If you have mega bucks lying around, then go MSD or other system, they're not cheap, but in the end you'll know what you were missing. The HEI will work, however IMO isn't as good as MSD, which seems to be the industry leader and what all the top fuel guys run. I haven't tried the others but I have two MSD 7AL2's and love them both, although I think I'm going to upgrade for more spark energy with my exotic fuel.
  7. Corzette, yeah, it's that speed at the other end that eats up all that additional power. I think it's going to be easier to go from 90 to 100 mph at the end of the quarter than to go from 115 to 125 mph. I think jap tin has a point, it's not about flow numbers in the books guys. I've built some motors with Brodix heads and I have a 454 BBC with brodix heads. The 454 makes 450 actual dyno Hp and over 500 tq with a really mild cam. Some heads with lower actual flow bench numbers can make more HP, Grumpy may have some enlightenment that he could share with his wealth of experience here. Although for the shopper, your likely to have a better engine if you go with the better numbers. Small differences in flow numbers usually don't add up to big differences in HP or TQ. Besides, I don't think there is anyone on this forum that can match Jap Tin's all motor HP right now, so he's talking with a big stick. Although I'm thinking the SB2.2 could be "the" platform for the next Hybrid Z and is my next motor of choice. Are those heads the newer G2 heads from TFS? They look really nice! If your going to dump them cheap I'd buy them too.
  8. Well, as an undercover agent for the ATF, I'm coming to get you! JK, I would be wary of posting pic's of that many of those type of weapons, some people would think your my FRIEND. Super nice collections all, super nice work. The nice thing about the 1911 if it is truly a clone is the interchangeability of parts, so I wouldn't worry about it that much, especially for an everyday shooter type weapon. Anybody that shoots much, especially IPSC, knows how much more power and harder hitting the .45 is vs the 9mm. Aren't those rugers really shooters!??? Mine isn't as fancy, but I insalled a Winchester 52 barrel with a match chamber and did some trigger work to make it really lightly crisp. Shoots one hole at 25 yards with gauged ammo. I've always wanted a "flat top" with a match barrel.
  9. The quadrajet runs great, but it is an emissions carb, probably nets you some mileage, but it is not designed a performance carb although it will run well. I got my Monte SS into the 13.30's at 105mph at 4500 ft elevation on a pretty stock (9:1, world 200 heads, isky .510 lift 246 duration cam and an edelbrock performer, headers) 406. Try a holley and see which one you like better, then powdercoat the one you like best.
  10. By the definition of hemi, it would become a flat hemi. I bet that'd make some serious power. I wonder if Trump could spare a few bucks for a sponsorship to pay for that?
  11. I vaguely remember Ardun heads, refresh that memory.
  12. Horrible to watch, he high centered his own car. Definately a darwin award due there.
  13. That's cheap, when you figure the paint. The paint on my monte SS was 4K alone, no bodywork.
  14. Yup, it has a nine inch ford rear end. Damn corzette that's some amazing change with AFR heads. I went from 12.33 to 11.70 changing from World sportsman 200's to AFR 220's. Both had a solid roller cam, just the head change, not as drastic as yours, but still a good improvement. I think a stock 350 will be in the 13's somewhere, from what I've seen a simple cam change and intake will put it into the 12's. And no 12's, even 13's aren't slow, that'll dust just about anything on the road these days, unless you run into another V8 z.
  15. There's some really bad cars owned by folks on this site, I'm always amazed at what I see. Check out the timeslip database and you'll get pointed in the right direction as far as who's doing what with what. But, what's even more lame is that when you do a search to see if any info does come up, you find that they surely couldn't of searched at all cause there is a wealth of info, sometimes there's so many threads, that it takes hours to scan them looking for any info that's pertinent. It seems that it's real easy to post a thread and watch the sharks circle and have no mercy.
  16. When we got the z it previously had a stock 350 and a th350. It ran 13.30's in phoenix with 4.56 gears and 26 inch tall tires, I saw the timeslips.
  17. I don't think cooling would be an issue with today's radiators, back then they didn't use fan shrouds either. Flat head in a z, that would be truly unique. They will make some power especially if you tune it up with a boring bar and a crank grinder! I've seen edelbrock aluminum heads go for around $600 on ebay so that coupled with some other good parts should make a great engine. I think your kind of limited in the bumpstick area, but I may be wrong. The old style carbs were problematic but EFI would be great, they convert the old stacks to efi now I'm told.
  18. Your right, your "seachering" skills suck, you probably spelled "turbo" as trubo like you spelled "cheap" as cheep and "fuel" as fule. I can only guess what other key search words got hacked, so maybe try again. Other than making fun of your spelling I have no value to add. It's late, I've been up for 20 hours working, so ignore me cause I'm amusing myself at your expense and I hope you don't take offense, cause none is intended.
  19. When the light turns green, just have someone from the stands come slap you in the face and wake you up would you, 1.429 reaction time?!!! It's either work on that or let grandma drive.
  20. I have a 6.5x300 Weatherby mag built on a remington 700 action with a 30 inch hart barrel, jewel trigger, 6.5x20 leupold scope all fit into a HS precision stock. Shoots one hole groups that measure about .350 inch at 100 yards. It has a custom brake and hardly kicks at all, so I'm pleased to hear the info about the AR and the info from wpnmkr. I'll try to snatch that up if the price is right. I've seen pictures of the Boyes with the top magazine, this one is converted to single shot and has a scope mounted on the top like a normal rifle, so it's been heavily modified. It still has the original brake, but I think I'll opt for another custom brake instead as it looks like a pancake on the end of the barrel. Pusher, it's that there are good deals, regs are certain to change and when I look out in my back yard, from the top of Baxter mountain, I can see for 90 miles in three directions (S, W, N) and not even see one town or city. I can hear the train at night that passes 9 miles away, I can see billions of stars on just about any given night. I have elk, deer, bear, coyotes and a host of other animals on my property. I can ride my horse all day and never cross a road. So, this is the definition of 50BMG country if there is such, besides, I want one, it's legal, so I'm going to get one. Oh, and driving too fast is illegal, so don't do it. And do as I say, not as I do. At least in reference to driving too fast!
  21. The first time I heard a 50BMG firing was in Casper Wyoming, the sound was incredible and when I got there these guys were shooting a single shot 50 from a portable bench at prarie dogs. When they'd shoot it it would topple the bench, shooter gun and all. The guys had small sand bags behind the butt plate inbetween the gun and his shoulder. No way was I going to pull the trigger on that, but that was in the '80's. I'm into accuracy and long range shooting, although I do shoot IPSC matches with my .45/.400 Corbon switchbarrel 1911. An understatement is that I have and load alot of ammo and I'm sure that if anyone checked me I'd be branded an gun and ammo nut. I'd get a 50 kit from RCBS which is about $500, components are pretty cheap, although it is akin to shooting a weatherby with factory weatherby ammo. I don't expect to shoot it all that often, but I have a place to shoot big mondo elk that it would come in handy. Also in my back yard I have 4000 deeded acres which borders the NF and there isn't a ranch house for 10 miles in any direction. Outside my front door I have a steel shooting bench permanently mounted on a concrete slab with a surveyed 100 yard shooting range that has a big hill for a backstop, although shooting the 50 at 100 yards is like racing a v8 z about 60 feet. I looked at the Barret and was impressed, but the Mcmillan and the Mcbros really seem to be more of what I'm looking for but they are pricey. The AR50 and that type of construction would be ok. Also I'm looking for the 8K to buy it, less if I get something else and wondering about finishing the turbo z and getting an engine back in the Monte. So the dilemma is new custom turbo manifolds to get the TT into the z, 215 raised runner AFR heads 18 degree heads, 15 degree heads, 14 degree heads, dart block, 4 inch stroke crank, yada yada or 50 BMG. If this Boyes rifle is cheap, like $1500 then I'll do it all. From what I can tell, these sell on the internet for anywhere from $1000 to $2500 if they are original and have the box fed 10 round magazine. This one is "customized" and is single shot, weighs around 30+ lbs, so I'm going to lowball this guy as best I can. From what I can tell, you really don't want to shoot a 50BMG offhand from the shoulder, cause if the bad guy is that close it's kind of like a hand grenade, you just have to get close and if he's on the other side of the car or house, it's no biggie!
  22. Been wanting one for along time. Regulatory issues make me think that now is the time to buy one. I have a chance to buy a custom rifle built arount the Boyes anti-tank rifle rechambered to 50 BMG. It has a custom thumbhole stock and is basically a single shot rifle. Any thoughts on the 50 BMG's?
  23. This is my advice if you've never been to mediation, you and her are in separate rooms and an old judge goes back and forth between rooms with one offer and another until all the issues are solved or not. He adds in his .02 cents worth, so it's pretty laid back. Best thing to remember is to keep calm, listen and think about what he is saying. Keep your emotions out of the process or you'll be there all day. Have some thick skin and try to look at the whole situation from an outsider point of view.
  24. and you guys thought I wasn't thinking straight when I said leave it the first time. Just goes to show you that mother nature, or is it satan himself, can't be fooled with, predicted, or changed. We wasted 500M a day with FEMA, now what are they going to waste? Would somebody screw on a head with common sense. I wonder if the donations are still racking up or are people starting to think it's a waste of money?
