78 Datsun 280z ------> 5.3 build

Believe me, it's going to have an access hole. I own an F-body, which doesn't have an access hole. FACEPALM GM. -
ls-engine + th350... which tranny mount?
SUNNY Z replied to 240zphilly's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
I was gonna post pics of my last setup, but then I saw you didn't want a nice shifter........... I have an old C4 corvette shifter, if you'd like that. Has provisions for backup lights and everything. -

Well I have the engine mounted, however, it's not permanent. I still have several things to torque on the internals, and some other stuff. I'm in the process of planning a transmission cross member to build, and working on the horendous cracks in the dash. A new set of Autometer gauges is on the list to be purchased in the NEAR future. Thats all I have for now! -
 Haha. Good discussion ppl. keep it coming. And as for the heat dissipation issue, I wasn't trying to imply that there is a "gain" in cooling by adding aluminum end tanks, I was just saying that they work better than plastic, and every little bit counts. SO, does anyone know where i can find a used JTR radiator? If not, I'm just gonna go with a custom Howe unit, which is only about $325, and then probably some aftermarket puller fan, or a set of f body fans if i can get my hands on some. This little purchase is a ways off, as i just bought a tranny, and the next purchase is going to be dash repair and a full set of autometer gauges. Been eyeing the CF version of the ultra lites, but we'll see!

Chevy LS1 V-8/72 240z Conversion Questions
SUNNY Z replied to digginmyz's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
FWIW, I have a (generally) rust free shell, 5.3 and everything it needs to run, 6 speed and clutch, stand alone harness, Fuel system, and ALL for under $2500. Just gotta know how to shop! haha -
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the plastic v aluminum tank issue. Why would people have custom fully aluminum radiators made if they weren't the best? Also, Aluminum dissipates heat better than plastic, so in theory, you would get more cooling capacity with the same size radiator. After doing some research, I think I'm going to give Howe radiators a call today and try and work on a custom unit for my car. Several guys have had excellent luck with Howe, and at a reasonable price. I believe the last FULL CUSTOM radiator i saw, with AN fittings, was $325 shipped. Definitely worth the money over a stock style radiator, IMO.

Cammed LS1 guys, need advice
SUNNY Z replied to pete280z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
that's just a lil guy! I run a Vengeance VRX4 in my Camaro. 228/230 .598/.592 on a 112, and it's awesome! I am considering pulling it out and going bigger. It's been said time and time again, but drivability comes from a good tune. -
Have you ever used a speedway unit in an S30 before? The thing I'm concerned about is fitment.

9's will be no problem. I'm waiting for you to hit the 8's I'll be in touch with you about that turbo situation. Maybe not tomorrow, but sometime. -
Thats what I'm sayin! If I'm gonna pay more than $300 for a radiator, I want to make sure it's going to be an all aluminum, fully tig welded unit. I've heard horror stories of how even Griffin radiators (yes all aluminum) have epoxy holding the cores in place, and that if you get them way hot, or even just after many heat cycles, the epoxy begins to deteriorate, and leads to failure. I'm calling my local (extremely well respected) radiator place tomorrow, to try and get a ballpark for a one off unit. This guy has built for the best. Even made a radiator for one of Niel Young's cars. Not to mention a certain BBC / weiand 14-17 blower 240z here in KS.

Alrighty. Thanks for your input.

Apparently no one here has a radiator? JK I spoke with a gent at Wizard cooling for about 15 minutes today. Good people. He recommended a down flow radiator, very similar to the one listed on their website. When I told him of the future plans (600+ whp) for the car, he thought I might want to opt for dual 1.25" cores. This would however, ad about .5" to the core, further decreasing space in the engine bay. So i guess the question is: What is the HP limit on the JTR unit? Does anyone have problems with them? What fan setup would you recommend?

Good info in this thread. I'll be doing this if I can't secure an ls1 water pump cheaply. -

Update for the coldest day of the year so far. BRRRRRRRRRRR -3* Just found a local 2000, 67k mile, T56 and centerforce clutch, everything is there -$1000 YEAH Baby! This project is actually starting to take shape! -
firs off, you need to do a little research on the ol gen 3 series engines ls1tech.com Yes, camaros are pretty much the best for swap donors. any 99 and up LS1 is a good engine, 98's are still good, just kind of the red headed step child and yes, without seeing it, its impossible to tell what it would be worth. judging by what you said, I'd say the hatch, spoiler, both rear quarters, rear bumper, and everything else back there is FUBAR. That being said, a low mile powertrain as such would easily bring 3500++ I'd say if you could pick the car up for 5K or less, it's going to be a money maker. my .02

I've been doing a lot of research on what type / size of radiator i want in my LSx 280z. I've seen quite a few guys running the JTR radiator, and several others. One that caught my eye was the Wizard Cooling radiator, which I know 1tuffz, and evilc both run. This unit runs about $400, but is gorgeous, and a nice fit. ------> http://wizardcooling.com/shop/ProductDetails.aspx?BaseID=69 I am simply looking for a radiator that will cool amazing, in any weather, and that I'll never have to replace, even when 6-700 rwhp comes around. Everyone feel free to chime in on their opinions / experiences.

Quick shot of the brackets I build for the rear of the fuel tank mount straps. 2.5" angle iron, 1.5" wide. drilled a 3/8" hole, tapped it to M10x15, threaded the rod into it, welded the back side. I then welded these to the 1.5" square stock above the tank. Came out really nice. More pics to follow later And then I FINALLY finished the body work in the engine bay. Ended up smoothing most of the welded areas over with bondo, to get just the finish i wanted. Here it is after 1 coat of primer. -

Well you can add that to the list of intakes that won't ever clear an F-body cowl, or a stock S30 hood Still cool -
New LS1 build clutch/slave question
SUNNY Z replied to cheesepocket's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Yeah, I'm not sure what's worse; having a car you can drive, with weather that won't permit, or, in my case, having weather that's nice enough, and two cars that aren't mobile. I feel your pain, believe me. -

Small update for now. I found an engine from a local guy on a message board. He currently has it installed in a '71 El Camino, which he was doing a turbo build on. He changed directions, before even firing the engine, so I'm getting a STEAL. The motor is a 2000 5.3 with 100k. -232/240 .595/.608 115 cam (From Exotic Performance Plus (EPP) For boost ) -Comp 918 beehive springs rated to .625 LIft -ARP rod bolts (~$100) -Autokraft oil pan ($400) -All front accessories -Edelbrock Pro Flo Intake ($400+) -Edelbrock Fuel rails (~$150) -RC racing sl4-750 injectors (75lb) ($500+) All new aftermarket stuff, never fired. I'll be picking it up for $1200 Also, the JCI engine mounts showed up today! I'll be building my own trans mount. (I think the $100 the get for theirs is just plain stuuupid) Deer season will be consuming the later half of my week Thursday-sunday, so I don't plan on getting much done, just thought I'd update. -
lol love the commentary.

New LS1 build clutch/slave question
SUNNY Z replied to cheesepocket's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
91 240sx not = 2000 Camaro. However, I've switched to a higher volume master ( larger diameter) in my camaro, with an adjustable throw. You DO NOT want to have a throw extensively longer than stock. If you over-extend it, you will damage the slave. I would check the throw of a stock ls1 master, and then buy a new master accordingly -

Well I made a little more progress this weekend. I worked on getting the f body tank mounted. It was a real PITA to do this by myself. Here's some of the ghetto fabb'n that took place. Just a hood-rich way of holding it up so i could measure it. I went ahead and used some 1.5" square tubing, rather than the 2" that a lot of people have. I did this only because it's what I had laying around, and is PLENTY thick enough to get the job done. Here is the first support And then the tank, with both supports welded to the frame rails, front and back. I then started mocking up the FPR/ filter. It's gonna be all in stainless, the blue line is just for a template. The FPR will be mounted to the rail, as shown I then started bending up tank straps, out of some 1.5" strap that i had. Here is a picture of the car, as it sits. With my buddy doin a cam swap on his 07 KFX 450 in the background. Then a friend brought over a pony keg of a microbrew, and needless to say, that was where productivity ceased for the evening. haha.:chug::chug: -

Well, the UPS man delivered this little bundle of joy yesterday.... (fuel system stuff) and within moments of opening the box, of course i had to play with my new toys Here is how the engine bay currently looks. Ready to do some final filling / smoothing and then paint! Here's the current pile of crap i've removed. Well at least 75% of it. I started taping my harness up, and beautifying it. Of course using vinyl, non adhesive tape. Also picked this up last weekend, from a friend's parts car. Its out of a V6, so the pump will have to be changed. Not sure on what i'm gonna put in it yet. I then started the hacking of my spare tire well, to fit the F-body gas tank. Here it is, Pre-Op Annnnnd more harness work Post-op. I cut the braces with a cutoff wheel, and the rest with a sawzall. Note the half a cutoff wheel blade in the opening in the picture. That is why you ALWAYS wear safety glasses when using this kind of thing. It split while I was using it and hit me in the eye. I did have my safety glasses on, (thankfully) and it just put a deep gouge in the lens. WEAR your PPE! A view from the bottom showing the supports that must be cut. And the tub. I got a little off my trajectory in one spot, but I'll have a cover over it, so it'll still be pretty. I hope to mount the tank, and get the fuel system plumbed this weekend! I plan on making a specific thread (hybridz) on how to do this swap, when I get it all done. -
Buy the car, sell it, and get an LS1.
