In the end of july I aquired a rod knock in my Hi mileage 350 after much abuse. I also started breaking universal joints so I parked the Z,Pulled the motor,dropped the fuel cell to make some mods. on that. I then pulled the 400 out of my plow truck, replaced that with a 350 and started the 377 build up. I am at close to $6500 in this motor right now and I still need a few things. As things stand this is what I have.

This is all done and purchased except final assy and I will do that hopefully by thnksgiving if the wife doesnt have other plans. She is wild now. I think I should start on her 64 Chevy II soon to keep her happy. To cure the u-joint problem I have committed to Ross for the cv upgrade and will do something to limit the squat factor.

T-56/Balanced drive shaft with Mcleod flywheel and street twin clutch for a total of $3000 by the time I was done.

It's good to see that after the various site revamps and reorganizations, some of these older posts are still around!

 

1978 280Z, made older by 6 years (long story)

6.25" firewall aft relocation.

semi-tube frame with all sorts of diagonals and such

1978 454 2-bolt block from Chevy Suburban, 0.030"-over

cast 454 crank (stock) and rods (resized, ARP bolts)

heads, cam, valvetrain: TBD!

Performer RPM oval-port intake, 750cfm Holley

Block-hugger headers into 2.5" dual exhaust, 3" mufflers

stock suspension (new bushings and JTR crossmember mod)

revised front end and hood

no dash, no interior (except for headliner), gutted doors

aluminum fuel cell in the trunk

Kirkey aluminum seat, bolted to roll cage

 

5 years ago, in "roadworthy condition" with cast iron heads and prior to some gutting, the car weighed 2725 lbs, about 51/49 (the BBC makes the car noseheavy, even though it's set back far enough that the distributer is 2" ahead of the windshield lip).

 

Future plans:

 

* reassemble rear suspension (disassembled to fix the infamous toe/camber misalignment from bent castings)

* finish front-end treatment

* AFR 265cc oval-port heads

* Cam Motion, 0.636/0.641", 239/242@0.050 mechanical roller cam

My 72 has a stock 5.0 out of an 82 stang. C-4 tranny with a B%M rachet shifter. Upgrades are torque cam, Ford aluminum intake with a 600 cfm Holley, vac sec. Mustang shorty headers. "Powered by Ford" valve covers. Taurus 2 speed fan. 75 280Z 3 core rad with stock shroud. Honda wiper upgrade. Honda praylude seats. 75 R200 rear. Home made side pipes going on soon. I'm currently bidding on a fuel cell. If I loose the bid, I've got a friend that does wonders with aluminum and I'll have him weld me up one. I'm taking the spare tire well put and not tunning rear exhaust so I should have a 20 or 22 gallon tank. I'm also sporting a newer Ford 4x4 eggcrate grill. Wheels are 14 x 8" real wires with 245/45/14's BFG's to fill up my flairs. Sony Explod with 200 watt amp. 3 piece spoiler. Can't decide if I'll put the aluminum shade on the hatch yet. I've decided to make my own dash out of aluminum and go with custon gages. It's going lectric blue with white Cobra stripes. Havn't decided if I want the bumpers or not. Still toying with taking the sunroof out and filling it in. Man, I love modifying!

10.5:1 compression 355. Vortec heads, edlebrock intake and carb. custom grind cam, NOS powershot. 700R4, R200. 3:55 gears, 275 nitto drag radials,

 

8 point roll cage, full autometer gauges, hurst ratchet shifter, cobra seats with 5 point harnesses. MSA flares. dual 2.5" exhaust with cut outs.

1973 Datsun 240z

 

Starting at the front here is what I’ve done.

 

Engine: (the only parts reused where the block and crank shaft!!!)

Internals:

350 Chevy 4 bolt main block, polished lifter valley block deburred. Bored .030 over. Speed Pro Teflon coated hypereutectic pistons, hung on Eagle SIR rods with ARP rod bolts, ARP main bolts. Comp cam mechanical roller cam PN12-769-8, grind #CS XR268 R-10, Trick flow pushrods, Scorpion 1.5 billet full roller rockers,

 

Externals:

Trick Flow aluminum heads PN#TFS 30400002, Trick Flow valve covers w/PCV, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake (gasket matched ), Edelbrock 750CFM carb (manual choke), billet air breather. NEW Mini starter, Summit racing HEI blueprinted distributor, SFI approved fluid type damper, aluminum water pump, billet pullies (2 groove) Summit racing chrome alternator with Summit racing custom billet alternator bracket. New Chevy motor mounts. JTR (Jags that Run) custom set back plates and billet aluminum spacers attached with all new hardware.

 

Cooling

Camaro single core radiator (bought new) with Black Magic adjustable temp control fan. Flex hoses. New (NOS) heater hoses and heater control valve under dash, heater core checked, cleaned and pressure tested.

 

Exhaust:

Hooker ceramic coated headers (1 5/8†primaries). Flowing into a custom bent 2 ½†to 3†exhaust system into a custom muffler with welded on exhaust tip.

 

Drive train:

World Class T-5 (5 speed) out of a 1991 Camaro. JTR bolt in transmission X member, new clutch, Tilton 7/8†master cylinder, Hurst billet shifter. Custom length drive shaft 21†with new Brute Force U-joints. New JTR pinion flange bolted to a (stronger than stock R-180) Datsun R-200 CLSD 280ZXT CV axles.

 

Suspension:

 

1†Motosports lowering springs, on all corners all New Tokico strut cartages, front billet strut spacers Energy suspension polyurethane EVERYWHERE, Bump stops, front bushings, TC rod bushings, rear control arms, moustache bar. 1†Motosports front and rear sway bars.

 

 

 

Brakes:

280ZX master cylinder

Arizona Z car brake kit front and rear. Wilwood calipers and 12.2†rotors

 

Wheels:

Centerline billet Azteks 17X7 with 225/45/17 front tires and 225/45/17 BF Goodrich Drag Radials on the rear. Z logo valve stem caps

 

Interior:

Full “brown breadâ€(foil with tar backing) sound deading insulation, additional sound deadening mat installed on fire wall, Auto Meter Ultra Lite gauges. 5†Speedo, 5†Tach, 2 5/8†oil pressure, water temp and fuel level gauges. Acura seats, Auto Power 4 point SCCA roll bar with additional seat belt X-brace, Crowe Enterprize 5 point racing harnesses (silver in color), Grant steering wheel (silver on black) full set of original fitting carpet, new tranny tunnel carpet, all interior panels dyed light gray, tinted windows. Fuel tank lines that run to evaporator tank replaced with new fuel hose.

Well lets see...

 

I started with a shell and built the car from the ground up using a parts car. Pictures are in the link in my sig. Unfortunatley I'm not terribly sure about some of the suspension parts. The springs are not stock and lowered the car but couldn't tell you where they are from. Same with the sway bars. All of the rubber suspension bushing are replaced with urathane.

Painted it myself (which you can tell when you get close!)

R-200 3.54 rear with a Phantom Grip

T-56 trans that needs rebuilt, Weir bellhousing & hyd throwout bearing

 

400 block bored 40 over

Scat 9000 crank, 400 mains, internally balanced, 3.5 stroke for 6" rods

Keith Black 194 hyper pistons, 10.7:1 w/64cc heads

73 240z **update** I have upgraded from a stock 73 to a 73 that used to be an scca track car, complete with full cage, coil overs and camber plates!

Cool to see this still going after 4 years!

 

Fortunately, HybridZ now has the vbGarage. After logging into the forums, click on "User CP" at the top left of the forum page. That'll take you to the User Control Panel page. On the left column, click on "Edit vbGarage" and paste that stuff and any other data on your car into a slot in your garage. Add some pictures too! Viola, your own personal web page on your car! Add other cars too!

One 71 V8 Z that I haven't run in awhile due to the other cars needing work.
