scott19
4 years ago, when I first got my current Z, it looked like this: 2 years ago, like this: A month ago, she's in a million pieces and colors: 2 weeks ago, mostly back together, in her primer outfit, ready for wetsanding: This weekend, my buddy and I built a makeshift booth: And here is the (almost) finished result: I say almost, because I've got enough orange peel for a Tropicana factory, and there's a major run on the passenger door that needs addressing (next stop:nib file and colorsanding). But besides that, I'm pretty happy with it. It's not perfect, but getting there! Thanks to all who've answered my paint questions here in the last few weeks! datsunlover
NICE!!! Orange peal and runs suck, but it looks AWESOME in the pics man!! Good job on the body man, black is a hard color to get looking good on top of a lot of body work.. and besides, going by at 80mph, who's gona notice some orange peal? OlderThanMe
looks good...My boss asks me every time I work when I am going to paint my 260...I always tell him that it is going to be like 2 years after I get the frame straightened and finish the suspension and make some metal flares... 280Zone
Looks great, but I kinda liked it in flat black too.
awd92gsx
Damn impressive if you ask me. That car looks mean.
Oldestzguy
Nice job. I am especially impressed with the ingenuity and progress you've made without access to a high performance professional paintbooth and such. That is what it is all about. Good job, and good attitude!!
Hypertek
looks hot! i love the do it yourself work.. more appreciation towards the car and its owner.
wpnmkr
Turned out great ! Way to do it ! Looks better than my 1st plastic and tape paint booth paint job.
DaleMX
Awesome, black is a great color! Nice work, wanna do another one!
Gollum
black is THE hardest color to paint, did anyone tell you this before hand? Well, if all the touchup work goes well props out too ya man. I've done enough painting to know my first real paint job won't be black, it's just SO much harder. And from what the pics show, the paint does look pretty darn good, keep up the DIY passion.
b__sosick
man! she looks GREAT! great work you should be proud!
mikeatrpi
That looks FANTASTIC. I'm following a similar path as you... my car is primered but I won't spray color until the spring. Did you use PPG Omni? Urethane or Acrylic? What kind of primer, and how many coats? Like I said that car looks fantastic. If mine comes out 1/2 as good I'd be pleased. Sit back its Miller Time, you deserve it!
scott19
Thanks everyone! Your words mean a lot, seriously! Here's a few more pics: Here's the run I was referring to (you can see the orange peel, too): I did some nib filing and some 1000 grit colorsanding tonight, and I feel confident that the paint's gonna look pretty good here soon. Stay tuned! Gollum: I did know that black was tough, but to me, it's the best color for an S30, even with some imperfections. Mike:The paint is PPG Deltron 2000 (code 9300) with DCU2021 clearcoat. On the advice of the paint salesman, I skimped a bit by using Omni primer. A no-no mixing lines, I know, but everything seems alright. time will tell. Total cost in paint, once I bought some extra cleaner and reducer ( just in case) was about $600.
Hypertek
was that a 280z? looks soo good, instead of being picky and looking for a 240z, i should prolly just settle for whatever nice chassis i find.
Guest el240z
I have to say that seeing how you completely tranformed your Z is very motivating for me to keep on working on mine. Great job and thanks for shareing with us. El
scott19
Hypertek: It's an early 260Z. It's not a bad philosophy to find the most solid (i.e. least rusted) Z you can find, regardless if it's a 24, a 26, or a 28 ounce!
rudypoochris
Thats true here in CA though we got plenty of 240's. I prefer the 240 for it's light weight but that is the sweetest 260z ive seen in a while kudos to you

scott19
NZeder, The wheels are Panasport replicas made by (I think) Western Wheels back in the '70's. I've seen them every once in awhile on ebay, but never as large as mine, which are 15x8.5", with 245/35/15 Dunlop SP9000's on them. Tires were REALLY hard to find that wide and low in 15". I found the wheels in a junkyard for, drum roll please, $100! They kind of dictated the course the car would follow ( I didn't originally plan on ZG flares and lowering the car so much).
