Future Tuner: 2009 Hyundai Tiburon

There has been a lot of talk from the Hyundai camp lately about the new Genesis sedan. From around the globe we can hear the executives in Korea singing its praises: "It will move us up market! It has a 380-horsepower V-8! It's got rear-wheel drive!" Those things are all well and good, but what we're excited about more than the big sedan is the soon-to-follow little brother coupe.

Currently the details are sparse, but that won't stop us from dubbing the new Tiburon the Next Big Thing for tuners everywhere. This car is such a big step over the old Tib that Hyundai is considering dropping the name to distinguish it. We've heard that both Tuscani - as the Tiburon is known throughout the rest of the world - and Genesis Coupe are being considered.

Why is the new Tiburon such a big deal? Like the best tuner cars, it has rear-wheel drive, a powerful engine, and (most importantly) a low price. Starting in the low twenty thousands, the coupe will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with horsepower in the low two hundreds. There will also be a 300-horsepower V-6 available, also mated to a six-speed manual transmission. We're predicting that the turbo-four will be the way to go.

We have a feeling that it won't take long before tuners start working on the internals and chipping the four-cylinder for big power gains. This will be Hyundai's first turbocharged engine since the Scoupe in 1995, and although that car has gone the way of the dodo, the Scoupe still has a devout following today. A quick online search showed that many owners have made modifications to increase power, and we expect the same behavior in the new Tiburon. Except loads of horsepower won't turn the Tiburon into the burnout machine that the Scope was. Its rear-drive layout will turn it into a big Korean drift machine.

All Hyundai has to do is make this car look hot, and so far, we like what we see. Sure, these are only spy photos, but they reveal quite a lot about the final product. We like the downward slanting slope over the rear wheels and the aggressive front end. Sized similarly to a Nissan 350Z, the coupe will have a usable rear seat.

The new Tiburon will go into production in late 2008 and be in showrooms early the next year. The Tiburon is the only rear-drive turbocharged sports coupe in its segment - so tuners all over the country need to save a spot in their garage for one.

RWD, turbo I4 or V6, low twenty thousands, usable back seat. . .

:mparty:

Maybe Nissan will make a similiar - turbo I4 - version of the 350Z to compete if the Hyundai does well :D

my guess is it'll get whored out like the srt-4 and be equally unimpressive. i think the wow factor is simply the fact that the US now has a turbo FR car available. doesn't even have to be that impressive. gotta break ground somewhere. now i wonder which Formula D driver is gonne drive one for the endorsement money. always funny to watch the "car commercial" that formula d has become.

I work for Hyundai and youll be seeing a few other new cars before you see the new "Tib" as im almost sure its not going to be called that. Theyre supposed to keep the Tib (a FWD) so ive been told by the region reps. Early next year Hyundai should release the Genesis sedan, this is a car Korea has had for years just updated and its going after the 7 series! Also soon you should also see a really cool Elantra Hatch.

not sure im as enthuised about the arival of this new "tib" as some of you are. This is only going to start another breed of b.o.v happy, rediculous body kitting and otherwise excesorizing, rice racing kids. As for the looks, from the back it looks like chevy cobalt meets tib, and from the front it looks like RSX meets tib meets G35, not too impressed. And while this may be a nice lil sports car to buy and customize to your content, i believe 240 swapped put it nicely in saying, "my guess is it'll get whored out like the srt-4 and be equally unimpressive" end quote. sry if i offended anyone with this post, pay no mind just my 2cents.

^ Lol no no nothing like that, I have never driven one but my friend owns one, sounds nice, looks alright, but come on, FWD, 4 door, and enough problems to be discontinued, nothing to build off of really. I no this has nothing to do with the new tib, jst gotta defend my post. The only connection between the two is that the srt came out, everyone thought was crazy awsome, talked it way up, and then, well, the rest is history. That was all i as tryen to say.

The only rwd turbo I-4 in it's class? I suppose the usable backseat takes it out of the realm of the Sky/Solstice....I don't know how i feel about that one. I'm no hyundai fan, but i do hope is spurs some growth in that market. Maybe we'll finally see a neo-510 or throwback AE86 (or celica rwd, i'm not picky). Step in the right direction, just wish somebody else would've taken it...

I hate Hyundai..

my parents own 2 Elantra's and a Sonata.. cheap Korean crap..

BUT!!! The Tiburon is a very nice "tuner car". Its dirt cheap and parts can be replaced for cheap. Hyundai made a very smart move producing this car.. why?! NO ONE ELSE is manufacturing a cheap RWD sports car...

From what I read the Tiburon will have a Turbo I4 and RWD or an optional V6. there is a possibility for a V8.. but we will see.

I looked into buying a Tib a few years ago. From the research I did, it looked like Hyundai was making a big push in their quality control dept. JD Powers had them ranked up there with Honda and Toyota in new car quality. I think they looked at how many cars had to come back for work within the first 100 days after purchase. As for middle and long term quality, I'm not sure.

I agree my mom owned a sonata worst car she's ever owned. All the Electric windows stopped working A/C stopped working. Transmission had problems shifting (Automatic) Motor eventually got a dead cylinder for whatever reason.
