Fired it up today.......
jnjdragracing replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Hello Dale, Will probably be in two weeks. Of course I have to work all next weekend, so can't go then. So it will be the weekend after, Will take it to Midlands drag strip. It is a 1/8 mile track, hooks up descent. It is a small back woods track so Jerry can do some practicing. It is going to be different. Probably will do a roll through burnout this time and take of easy and lay into it gradually to see what happens. It sounds and feels like a lot more power than I was anticipating. I guess we will see. John -
Hello Uncle Wayne, Yep we plan on attending Reynolds. Need to make a few shakedown passes. It won't be until two weeks. I have to work all next weekend. I just hope the Z will hold together. Have a safe trip back.... John

I don't know. I guess et times will tell. I am not taking it to the dyno this time. Probably will not hook..... John -
I posted this under Our new project, but just in case no one was following it or has already looked at it. I decided to post it here. Finished everything this morning. Jerry came by after lunch and we poured 5 gal. of Alky in her. Primed her with race gas and fired it up. She breathed life long enough for me to set the timing. We shut it down and was just amazed at how the torque / power felt and sound. I told Jerry we better start building the other Z. I think we are going to rip this one apart. Below is the link to a video I took after checking everything out from earlier. It is a 30meg video some right click on the link and save as. http://www.jnjdragracing.com/alky/firingitup.mpg After watching it I noticed stuff falling off the shelves, this thing is awsome. It shakes my shop etc..... Can you hear the Power...... John

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RICK, how is the Lexus runnig? Jerry & John

It is made by Moroso, it is just a quick disconnect. Since we are getting older and bigger around the belly we need it in order to remove the steering wheel so we can slip in the car because of the roll cage. John

Not sure Justin, Last time on race gas we were pushing in the area of 700 - 750 RWHP but gas builds heat and that is what we were fighting. We played with different over drive rations 1-1, 2% over and 8% over. With the Alky we are just staying with 2% over driven. I am running a stock production block so I am limited to what I can put out. Some of my friends are running overdrive ratios of 50% or more. I guess all in all it depends on your engine setup etc. You can add a Nitro mix to the alky for more power. John

Congrats Grumpy!!!! Jerry&John

Yep, I remember seeing before. It looks good. Thanks for the compliment as well. John

I posted some pictures of the roll bar cage earlier this week, it was under jegs rollbar kit. You can check it out. Also go to www.jnjdragracing.com and you can see pictures of our setup. John

Thanks DavyZ for the complement. Jerry

When you O-Ring the block you use copper head gaskets and coat them with a sealer like Holimar or some people use RTV silicone. This seals the copper head gasket to the block to prevent water from leaking in the cylinders etc. The O-Ring goes around the cylinder and puts a groove in the copper head gasket to seal the cylinder for compression If you look at my website jnjdragracing.com under engine pictures you will see my block with O-Rings. If you plan on running alot of compression like we are now you need to O-Ring the cylinder heads also. Some people use Cometic head gaskets which are supposed to be good as O-Rings, I have some Turbo friends that use them opposed to the cost of O-Ringing. I hope this answers your question. You can search the internet for maybe a better example. John e=PanzerAce;934211]So what exactly to people mean when they talk about o-ringing an engine? I *think* I get the basic concept of using o-rings instead of a gasket around the cylinders, but what do people do where the rest of the head and the block meet? And how long do they hold up? Thanks for the information.

No, Alky is cold, Not like gas which burns hot. Should not need one. I did tap 1/2 inch plugs in the timming chain cover in case I need to. I will use an electric water pump and plumb into it and probably run through a external oil / trans cooler if necessary. Since we will run only 1/4 to 1/8 mile I do not think I will need one. Running mechanical injection with a bird catcher you have to have it so rich at idle because of the transition from idle to wide open because there are no accelerator pumps. The engine runs cool unless we have a lean condition. We will have to see. John

If you are ever in the columbia / Lexington area let us know, we can meet up some where and talk shop. John

Yes,we do, we also run at some other tracks too. Jerry

Jerry sold it, but we have another 240Z that is a backed half car with a 9 Inch under it. Just wanting to see how far we can go with this one. John
-
Yes we did, we made our own bar. John

Well since out last mishap at DNI Drags resulting from bent valves etc. I decided to sell all my upper blower set up and switch to Alky. Sent the blower off to Littlefield to get restripped and clearenced for Alky. Contated Good Vibrations and ordered my Alky setup, Bought a used Bird catcher and rebuilt the engine. Running Alky requires more compression so I had to use Jerry's Dart 230 steel heads witch have been cut to I think 43cc and a 30 Thousands copper head gasket which should bring my compression from 8.5 to around 10.5. The Dart 230 heads have 2.08 intakes valves verses my 2.05 intake valves. Had to order a new Alky roller cam and also have my dish pistons fly cut. Other than that all is the same 355 cu motor. Spent all weekend fabbing up a new fuel cell that would fit in front of the car and also added a little extra front end protection to protect the cell from any mishap. Made the braided fuel lines tonight. Still have to take the feul cell out and chemical seal it. Hope to fire up the monster this weekend. Still need to add the blower restraints. We are getting it prepped for Silver Dollar race way in October. John PS: we will see just how much the little R200 can handle.

Hey Ivan280zt, Sorry it took so long to take these for you but I have been busy and pulled in many ways. I hope it is not to late, but maybe you will get some ideas. The cage has been certified to 8.50 1/4 mile. John PS: the rear back bar behind the seats where the harnes bolts to was custom made, not jegs. Also the rear bars were custom made, only the hoop and window / dash bars were jegs.
