Holset turbo warning... Please discuss
jnjdragracing replied to gearheadstik's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Gearheadstik, did Rip ever have any trouble with his Holsets when he used them? I have two that Rip gave me for our TT sbc. They are wh1e, Rip told me to replace the seals. Have you ever change the trust bearing in one of these turbos? Thanks for any info, Jerry -
what size drag slicks?
jnjdragracing replied to jonnyringo's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
We use a 28X9 M/T slick on a 15X7 Weld wheel with a 4.5 BS. We did have to trim the wheel opening for the 28" tire but not much. But like Gearheadstik uses a 26X8.5 goes on with out any mods. Jerry -
I will be running for insurance. Think of the accumulator as insurance in a can. I have a 3qt one made by accusump. Since I plan on running 50w oil and a oil heater. I will heat the oil 1st then use the accumulator to prime the oil system and then fire up the engine. We will also use it in case the oil is sloshing about to keep oil pressure through out the system. Note: I do have to battle water / alky in my oil, but again to me it is cheap insurance...... Mine will be tapped in the oil passage next to the oil filter on a SBC. You can go to canton or moroso and look at installation instructions. John

John, you forgot to mention the twin turbo setup, I will be making some changes to the rear suspension, to keep the car from hitting the tires so hard. ( leaving so hard) The car put down a 1.31 60' tripping the timers with the back tires. John, will be painting, and I will be working on the rear suspension, getting it ready for PINKS ALL OUT, and DNI in Renolds,G.A. Jerry

The front support that the rack / steering bolts to is bent some. I guess it is from the bunch of abuse from the front end hitting. I have a hook welded under the car on that support which is longer than the oil pan etc. All the hits that hook has taken has bent that support / brace. Other than that no other damage........ We do run a front motor support and a mid-plate motor support, along with baddog framerails. Also the 10 point cage, so the whole car is tied together pretty well, no flexing etc.... John

Yep we found the solution, change the engine...... My brother is putting together another Nitrous motor and I am looking for an alky carb to try also and just leave the blower off for now. If both of these fail to come about we will be putting weight up front and possible wheelie bars on back. Probably run a timer also that will be triggered at a certain point to retard my timing about 10 degrees and then when it settles down it will kick it back in. The Zcar will be in paint and body prison for awhile. This will give us somethime to determine what we are going to do. John

Has any one read the April 2009 issue of Hot Rod? It has an article in it about the Toyota 2JZ-GTE engine and it is installed in a 1967 Camaro. It is Turbo charged and they are talking about the kind of power it is making like 823HP with a completly stock bottom end etc... up to 1500HP. It was a pretty interesting article about these engines. I thought I would share the info with you all. Pick up a copy and read it for those who are interested. John

Hey guys, Wanted to let evryone know I posted some of our test runs on youtube. You can go to www.youtube.com and search for jnjdragracing. I have not had time to update my webisite. Our last outing on 12/13 was at Darlington dragway. Car still lifting up, we tightened the front limiters all the way and did not help. Just made for a rough landing. On one of the videos you will see the suspension working its A$% off. On our gas foot pedal we have a holster like thing on it. It is made to hold your foot on the gas pedal so you can lift back on it in case the throttle sticks due to frost on the birdcather butter flies. The car took off crooked and Jerry had to let out of it and the front end came down had and it looks like a bull frog jumping.... On another pass some how Jerry went to neutral and went against the rev limiter and I tell you what boost, alky and the rev limiter is not a good mix. Had quite of an explosion out of the exhaust. Motor did not sound to good after that like a dead cylinder. Back at the shop did a compresion test and found a very week cylinder after more testing had a intake valve not seating. Pulled engine and tore it down. I must be living right, checked out my bearings and had a rod bearing fixing to go.... Come to find out after the fact that I need to be running 50W - 70W motor oil. I was running 10w30 since I have to change it out after my passes due to water / condensation and alky in the oil. You live and learn. John

Well our 78 280z zcar with the roll cage, baddog frame rails, 355 cu. chevy with 6-71 blower, 2 speed glide, lexan door windows, doors gutted, 5 gallon fuel cell, weld rims, slicks etc weighs in at 2745lbs no driver. We are running the 240z front bumper and stock independent suspesion. With driver is 2965lbs. We have lightened it from the original car, but with the rollbar, blower, adds extra weight. I do think the 280z was heavy compared to the 240Z. John

JNJ or whoever, need help with 60' times
jnjdragracing replied to HICKL's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
We are hooking the chain in the fender well closest to the nose of the car in the thick metal. I will take some pictures today if I don't go to the track. Planning on going to spectate. Lets say if the front end was not limited when you take off the weight transfer back and it will do this be fore it actually launches, by limiting the travel it launches quicker. If you tighten it up more like at ride height etc. then the rear end / slicks have to work harder, note it is rougher on parts since you limited the travel. I hope this helps and I hope I explained it okay. I just know from trial and error it does work. John -

Hello HickL, Sorry I have not been on Hybrid in the past day or so. This is what my brother Jerry pmed a member. I hope this helps you. " We are using 89 chevy celebrity (front) strut cushions. I removed the springs off of the rear struts, and put a level on the haftshafts to find the height needed to make sure the shafts were level and added a 1"for crush. In my case I am using two per side(strut cushions). You can do this with the springs still on the struts, but you will have to remove them to install the cushions. " The front limiters ( we use chain and eye bolts ). We tighten the front end travel down which keeps the travel out. If we are wheel standing bad then we tighten them more. Of course this helped before my new Alky engine, does not help much now. Please PM my brother if you have any more questions and good luck. John -

horsepower and stock 4 lugs
jnjdragracing replied to G-rib-73-240z's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Dustin, we did try MT Drag radials, 275/60/15 with out much luck. The supercharger builds boost as soon as the rpm's start going up. I want to try some MT et streets in the future. IMO I think the Drag radials will work better with a turbo set up, which is why you see more turbo cars in the Drag radial class (NMRA) I have a friend Chris Tuten that raced this class for several year and won a Championship in this class. One of the Great things about turbos is you can bring in the boost when you want it. I have been working on a TT setup for our car and hope to try it out in 2009. If you go to our website we have videos of us trying the Drag radials. jnjdragracing.com . Jerry
