Cutting dizzy spindle to eliminate dizzy
BRAAP replied to theghosttanker's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Personally, I prefer to cut the quill shaft down. With the dizzy removed, there is nothing now to support the top section of shaft, (note the air gap between the shaft and dizzy hole in the picture. The Dizzy locates the upper portion of the quill shaft). The jury is still out if it really has benefit or not, though I am convinced that between "leaving the quill shaft to wobble around" vs "cutting it down", that cutting it down is the lesser of the two evils and eliminates the “possibility†of premature quill-shaft/front cover wear, whether that possibility exists, or not. For what its worth, I ran mine with quill shaft shortened! Here is a thread talking about this exact situation… http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114801 -
Happy 32nd Birthday Drax240z!

Cool. Glad to hear you are able to move forward with the project.

Check your oil level. If the injectors are leaking heavily, that excess fuel will run down past the rings and into the crank case which will be evidenced by a higher than normal oil level as registered on the dip stick.

.050†is not a common overbore, (I don’t recall every boring and engine .050†over in all my days boring and honing blocks). More than likely that is the metric stamp and reads .50 which stands for ½ mm over bore, or .020â€. In that case, the next size up would be .75mm or .030â€, or even 1.00 or .040â€. In short, I am 99% sure you have MORE than adequate material left to meet the next two overbore sizes.

Yeup! I think a couple times over the past couple years... Always a good laugh..

O-ring injectors are Factory Chev '85 Corvette C-4 injectors. I think they were either 19 or 21 lb/hr, I don't recall. The Barbed injectors? I don't recall, sorry.

Picture is with the dual 2" when L-28 powered, exiting out of the stock '75 bumper mount holes, (modified fuel tank to allow exhaust clearance). Converted to dual 2 1/2" after the JTR V-8 conversion. Looked the same, just slightly larger of course and the holes in the body had to be opened just a skosch to clear the larger pipe to keep from rattling.

With the car running and everything plugged in, have you listened to the injectors with a mechanics stethoscope to verify that the offending injectors at electrically/mechanically operating? Listen to each injector at the exact same location, they all should sound the same. A sharp "clicking" sound. If you don't have a mechanics stethoscope, you can use a long screw driver. Tip against the injector, ear on the handle of the screw driver. If no clicking or soft clicking, wiggle the connectors on that injector. Even try swapping connectors for known running injector. (the stock EFI is not timed like spark plugs, they all open and close at the exact same time so no worries of crossing injector wires).

As already stated ANY after-market/performance cam other than stock is too big for the stock ECU! And with any cam other stock you will need matching springs! Stock springs are barely adequate for stock cams when they are fresh. Being 30 years old and 100,000 miles on them, valves start to float before ideal shift point with the stock cam. More cam exaggerates this problem. All of this has been covered in depth on this forum including the results from others that have tried it! If you want more performance, there are a few other areas to gain performance if you have to retain the stock ECU, and not have make so much of a compromise in power vs drivability.

Derek, That is absolutely stunning! Sorta has that era period, full tilt factory backed race car engine appearance! If Nissan themselves campaigned a 240-Z with EFI, THIS is how I envision it looking! Incredible!
-
Good eye. The gasket is definitely one of those universal CARB/EFI gaskets, though it hard to make out for sure if those holes are actually in the head as well.

DOH! Sorry about that Joe. I started doing that in an effort to reduce the amount of space my novels take up. I'll stop doing that. Can you read me now!

Just deleted 2 posts for going beyond PG! C'mon guys!?!? This sort of thread really has no place on this forum to begin with, but we'll relax a bit and leave it if you can manage some self control, i.e. keep it G-PG. Hey, here's a thought. How about sticking with the clean-joke theme that is established and tell your trailer trash jokes to uncle Bahb? Next unclean joke posted and this thread gets deleted and the offeneder gets a 3-10 day suspension, depending on my mood! SAVVY?

Like duh!?!? Everyone knows there is no such thing as Santa Claus or a smart Blonde!..

A smart Blonde, a Dumb blonde, and Santa Claus were all racing towards a $100 bill. Who do you think got it?

Try looking in the "Gen III/IV Chevy V8" section (LS1 is a Gen III) and the dedicated Z32 sub forum. I moved this thread from the Gen I/II section over the GEN III/IV section

Here is the basic theory on that hole. As for it how it applies directly to your application, I only hope this also applies helps… Carburetors also have hat hole as well, for similar reasons. Allows the butterfly to be mostly closed while still allowing air to flow past the butterfly to maintain idle speed. Ideal scenario as In understand it; 1) Butterfly closed almost to the point it is contact with bore of the Throttle body itself. 2) Idle speed control motor in the middle of it travel at idle, (not sure if that is at warm of cold operation, most likely somewhere in between). 3) Most TB have “ported†vacuum ports that are a set distance in front of the butterfly, “timedâ€, so as to engage at specific throttle settings/engine load demands for what ever reason or those ports are controlling. 4) TPS is clocked for the desired voltage feedback to the ECU indicating OE specified “closed†throttle. In meeting these goals, if the engine has more radical cam/s, i.e. more valve overlap such as high performance N/A applications, there may be a small hole in the butterfly to allow the extra air required for the engine to idle to get into the engine during idle without having the idle speed motor now operating that much closer to its end of travel or adjusting the butterfly itself “more open†at the closed position thereby altering the point at which the timed vacuum ports kick in, TPS values etc. Granted, most TPS are adjustable for such scenarios, but the timed vacuum ports in the TB are not adjustable, at least easily any how, Not sure if this applies to your specific application but should at least help in explaining why those holes are sometimes there. This picture shows how close the “ported†vacuum ports are to the closed butterfly. EFI Throttle bodies will have ported vacuum ports as well. Some L-28’s have 2 and I recall there being 3 differently placed ported vacuum ports on of those. Courtesy users.sfo.com

1978_280z , Welcome to HybridZ. You are not in trouble with your first post. Having threads locked and tossed in the shed happens to a lot of us when we forget or haven’t read the rules. (Some of mine have been locked and tossed too...). So don’t take it personal, rule #12 address having thick skin. As you now realize, this isn’t your typical bubba bonehead gear head car forum. These "gear heads" actually take high performance around here a bit more seriously than some other forums, in reality, we aren’t asking for much. No fighting, no biting, no punches below the belt, don’t be afraid to search, don't pee in Cozy Z Cole's front yard, title your threads based on thread content, and some basic sentence structure are just a few of the simple rules we have. We don’t expect college level grammar but when we see posts that aren’t even grade school level, we’ll lock and toss those threads. Here is a “getting started†thread, (at the top of the new members sub forum titled “READ ME FIRST! Pleaseâ€); http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=130442 As for your introduction post, http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=147955 … many factors of that post were indicators to us that you had not read our rules and guidelines yet. You were just being reminded to read them. 1) Introduction threads belong in the “New Members†sub forum, not the technical V-8 sub forums. 2) Sentence structure? These two threads linked below will shed light on that portion. Something along the lines of “if you want professional information, ask in a professional manner!â€; Click ME for the lazy pinky rant. Click ME for the HBZ "SHIFT" campaign. 3) This forum was established in early 2000 around the V-8 Z car conversion. As such, if one is contemplating such a swap, we feel the JTR manual is a must, we don’t people to use the forum as substitute for the JTR or a service/Haynes manual. Welcome to HybridZ, Paul HybridZ staff

I found quite a few 3 series, '03 and newer, (over 150 cars within 500 miles of my zip code that met the 4dr, less the 50k mi and between 10k-20k range). Not sure a RWD BMW is what you are looking for or desire, but if so, here is small sample of the ones I found that did meet the criteria, except maybe for the combined mileage portion. Combined mileage for the 330 is probably not 25mpg, but is should definitely be more than 20mpg. The 325 should be closer if not able to meet your 25mpg combined, depending on driving habits of course. Found a few with as little as 18k mi in this criteria. (I've been looking specifically for a BMW as my next daily driver, with the intent of installing my LSx)… http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=259333796&dealer_id=63870503&car_year=2004&rdm=1241316031714&num_records=75&model=330I&make3=&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model2=M3&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=38&standard=false http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p&car_id=254277420&dealer_id=63519365&car_year=2004&rdm=1241316031714&num_records=75&model=330I&make3=&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model2=M3&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=159&standard=false http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=257874769&dealer_id=54303346&car_year=2006&rdm=1241316651283&num_records=75&model=BMW325&make3=BMW&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model3=325CI&model2=325I&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=167&standard=false http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=254929493&dealer_id=54303346&car_year=2006&rdm=1241316651283&num_records=75&model=BMW325&make3=BMW&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model3=325CI&model2=325I&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=167&standard=false http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=261612528&dealer_id=1050441&car_year=2005&rdm=1241316651283&num_records=75&model=BMW325&make3=BMW&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model3=325CI&model2=325I&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=513&standard=false http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=261634328&dealer_id=1384640&car_year=2005&rdm=1241316651283&num_records=75&model=BMW325&make3=BMW&systime=&make2=BMW&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1992&engine=&keywordsrep=&keywordsrep=&keywordsfyc=&keywordsfyc=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=500&marketZipError=false&model3=325CI&model2=325I&search_lang=en&sownerid=585544&showZipError=n&make=BMW&color=&keywords_display=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=10000&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=97055&advanced=&end_year=2006&transmission=&doors=&max_price=20000&cardist=127&standard=false And there tons more.
