THAT sounds like a great plan. But I'll second the truck thing (with a couple small reservations). The first vehicle that I drove regularly was a '93 Toyota pickup. 22re with a stick. Quick enough to get out of its own way, but not fast. It did well in the lowish revs and lower speeds. No wrecks (got lucky a couple times) and reliable. In fact, that truck is about to be on its FOURTH first driver. Reservations- It does donuts REALLY well for having an open diff. Its stock suspension feels pretty good in the dirt. It was predictable in the air. See where I'm going with this?

tire size sport max 002
essdeezee replied to MyLaDyZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Depending on your budget and cashflow, the staggered tire size suggestion could be good or bad. Staggered tire setups don't allow you to rotate the wheels front to back, and can suffer from tire longevity issues (in terms of one end vs the other). If "money ain't a thang" and you like the look, go for it! For me (low bucks, low steady cashflow), I prefer the same tires all around. I get longer life (time) by being able to rotate. I can save for a new set of tires over a longer period of time. Pay less at shorter intervals or more at longer ones. In the future, I plan on a symmetrical setup. I plan to get good fitment by slightly spacing out the rear wheels. Side note: the admins don't take kindly to the same post in multiple forums. I'd delete the one in the s30 area. -
As norm on zcar.com says: "If you can stop your fan with a TV guild, you need a new fan clutch" I've never been sure if he meant "TV guide" or not, but if you can stop it with your fingers when the engine is hot, you need to take care of that! I've just been through the conversion to an electric fan, and really, it wasn't worth the effort in my case. If I were you, I'd install a shroud from a later Z and just replace or rebuild the fan clutch. http://www.hammondsplains.com/newtechtips/cooling/index.htm

Any last things before I race
essdeezee replied to h4nsm0l3m4n's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Take it easy your first day! Be there with the intent of listening, rather than talking. Instructors (if properly chosen) have the capability to teach you A LOT! Since it's a novice day, I assume they'll walk the course with you as a group, pointing things out as they go. Listen close. Try and commit the course to memory. You should be able to drive it in your head before you fire up the Z. Things can get confusing early on, you may feel lost in a sea of cones. If in doubt, slow down and let your instructor point the way. Don't concentrate on driving fast, concentrate instead on driving the proper line. Speed comes only after you learn how to put your car on that line every time. Also, try not to be the hotshot jackass who cones 5+ times on their runs because they push too hard. Above all, don't take it too seriously! Autox is an amazing learning experience, and it can be a whole pile of fun. -
looking for help with a very budget build drag 240z
essdeezee replied to 240z!!!'s topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Put it like this, your intended budget, limitations, and goals don't really line up. You can use an s30 for a budget build that is limited by rules, but realistically you won't be in a position to dominate the class. Maybe an old VW would be more appropriate. However, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun in the process and learn quite a bit about the s30. Just don't expect to win. Remember, european exotics are also imports. -
Blizzard is known for making lots of pop culture references...

My brain runs NONSTOP. Not in the "Ok, time to breathe. Oh wait, contract that stomach muscle to help digest the food" sort of way. I have a hard time getting to sleep because I can't shut my brain off. Sometimes, simple mindless things offer relief. I actually enjoy sweeping the cigarette butts off the patio at work at the end of the night. For 5 minutes, my brain is effectively off. Sanding bondo skimcoats, cleaning parts, and gaming are some of the other ways that I turn my brain off for a while. That being said, I used to be a diablo 2 hardcore pvp addict. I'm still recovering. Why, oh why, are they making diablo 3? -
Sweet jesus! That car must be absolutely terrifying. (I mean that in the most complimentary way possible) But wow. That track is ridiculous (I also mean that in the most complimentary way possible). No matter how many videos of laps I see on it, it's still ridiculous. Imagine how much more so it is in real life.

Unless they have a steering wheel of their own... or vice grips. Removable wheels are for race cars. Ignition/Fuel cuts are for street cars. Neither can stop a flatbed.

Bump! I wish I had enough experience with mixing paint products to help, but you guys got me all excited!

My go-to-guy is still around, and hopefully will for a while. It's a good reminder for the rest of us to always show the respect and appreciation that they deserve. It should also be an inspiration for us to try and be that which we respect and appreciate. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Depending on situation, yes I brake check occasionally. Mine usually consist of just enough of a tap to get some weight transfer going. If I'm in the Z, NEVER.

Hand injuries and dirty hands are two of my pet peeves. The rest of me could be covered in dirt and grease and god knows what, but if my hands are clean? I'm good to go. Small hand injuries are just annoying, they bother me constantly. I LOVE the mechanix gloves. Expensive, yes, but I like having the dexterity they allow and still having some protection. Try suggesting them as a potential present for you for birthdays and such to others. I have about 10 different pairs in different stages of wear. For dirtier jobs, HF makes a industrial black nitrile that I like a lot. Much heavier than the standard blue ones. Aside from personal hygiene and protection, gloves help keep the rest of your car/tools/workplace cleaner.

Another place I've found caps for vacuum type stuff is a local place called industrial liquidators. They have a wide array of sizes for fairly cheap. Yet another place I've found things like this is Home Depot! They call them screw protectors, and they can be found in the specialty nuts/bolts drawers. IIRC, they go up to 1/2". If this is the case, and you need something larger, head over to the section where they sell end caps for things like chairs and barstools.

I've noticed quite a bit of humor from the 4chan/SA/WM type forums infiltrating the non-tech board. I like it. On that note... Datsun 1: O HAI!!!! Y so slo? Datsun 2: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!! (rage)

Would you mind telling us what vehicle these projectors came off? It's 1/2 price day here coming up fri.-sat. and I have a trip planned. I sure hope you read this and reply before that!!

The music business is a bitch. I wouldn't wish it on anyone who didn't love it. Then again, so's restoring/modifying cars. Keep on keeping on my man. It can't rain forever. There's just not enough water. Here's hoping your hard work on the house pays off.

Hey, just wanted to pop in and say that I really like the re-clocking of the speedo. Function over form looks nice here.

Stock rims... Quality tires?
essdeezee replied to zeiss150's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Look into the Falken Azenis rt-615. You seem more interested in straight line traction, but these are excellent dual-purpose (street/autox) tires. We have been running the azenis series since about 2001 on the family autox miata. No complaints. Only issue for you is the size. 195/60/14. edit: They're also cheap (when compared to tires that offer similar grip), which is our primary reason for the selection. -
I second the vinyl paint idea. I did mine a couple years ago and it looks like black vinyl. However, I didn't put it on very heavy, so there are a couple wear spots. One is on the trans. tunnel just beside the accelerator pedal, one is right at the driver's right hip. Another few squirts of paint should fix it right up.

Well, if you're set on a ford, you could go solid axles front and rear out of a 4x4 ford truck...but that would be about as good of an idea as the OP. No offense grim.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a 1/4 air ratchet. I REEEEAALLLYYY like the new Ingersoll-Rand, but most definitely can't afford it at this point. http://www.shopperschoice.com/item_item_434516.html?PID=1609763 General tool knowledge suggests the big brands for quality (Snap-On, MAC, Cornwell, I-R) but I can't afford any of their offerings new right now. So......I was thinking about going Harbor Freight for their stubby (which I ASSume I'll use less), and waiting on Craigslist for the right name-brand to pop up. I'm considering either http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93821 or... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93800 What say you?
