Mike fantastic idea but look before you leap. It sounds like there is a market for your services but do your homework. Banks like to see real numbers when proposing ideas. If you've ever done a business plan great, if not go to any local college and they should have a small business center (which is usually funded by the state so the general public can use the services). There you will find a wealth of information on SBA loans (yes it would be easier for your wife to get a loan), business plans it's very likely that someone has done what you're tying to do and published a B-plan on it. Also don't discount using a major parts brand or oil company for advertising help. The Big-Q didn’t get there by mistake and someone will more that likely help out with signage and promo items if you carry and use their product exclusively. All said it’s a long and tedious road but at least explore it and if it looks good GO FOR IT. I have several ideas for business per year the downfall being somebody else always beats me to the punch, don’t let this happen to you. Get on it and stay on it. Good luck, David

where can I get a V-8 kit for a 240z? Help please!
dsommer replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Jonathan, If you have the JTR book try reading it. It states in the book that JTR sells the kit. On this board use the search function there is a wealth of information on this board and many topics have been covered several times over. Just because you don't know what an engine is does'nt mean that you cant learn. Just do some research and you will probably find the route you need to go ie buy completed V8Z, buy conversion parts and crate engine ect. Just cruise around this baord and see what you're comfortable with. Good luck and welcome aboard. David -
Good topic, either way you go get the JTR handbook to help out with the swap. I keep flip floping on which kit to use one day JTR next day MSA. Has anybody out there done a side by side comparison? I know the MSA tranny mount mounts in the tunnel where as the JTR mounts to the floor pans. Jury is still out for me, the headers are still my greatest fear since I'm going to be running angle plug heads. David

Been working on my car and waiting on parts almost 2 weeks now. I was doing the R-200 swap with all new bushings but since I'm here I might as well... Fix a small rust patch under the car. Pull the fuel tank and replace all the lines, factory book says vent lines run to "vapor tank?" where the hell is that ? Behind panels. Oh panels, well I was wanting to change the interior color later might as well pull em all out. Since I'm here lets install sound deadener in the entire back of the car. I' going with "brown bread" similir to dynamat ultimate or something like that. Moving right along might as well get that new fuel pump installed for the swap, oh yeah one of these days I'm going to put that engine in Tonight finish the rust repair, paint fuel tank, complete fuel pump install, maybe start on the R-200 INSTALLATION. Havin fun!!! ds

Yeah I found the voltmeter this AM in a Jegs catalog. They have a really cool courtesy lighting kit for the doors too, may do that tward the end of the project. David

Cool!!! I'm wanting to do the same to mine. Where did you order it? I've seen them in JC Whitney but for $49.95. On your Autometer's are you running the red or green lights? How bright are they? I think I'm going to run the red ones. Anybody else with AM Ultralites pleas comment. David

FrostByte, How can you gain real world experence if you don't at least try to do the swap yourself? You mention a kit car well I looked into a Cobra kit from several different companies (factory five being my favorite) and found that it takes a lot of skill and a big fat wallet to "build" a car from the ground up. Don't sell yourself short. I've owned my Z for almost 3 years now and am just starting to work on it. I pulled the rearend and am in the process of installing a R-200 (stronger rearend) What might you ask have I been doing with my Z for the past 3 years? Enjoying it!!! Driving it around town a bit and just cleaning it up. What have I been doing with my money buying tools: air compressor, air tools, welder, wrenches, building an engine, finding a tranny and now rebuilding the entire suspension. You can do the swap just start reading up on it and collecting tools. Good Luck!!!! David

things you find out if you lay under your car long enough
dsommer replied to fl327's topic in Non Tech Board
Pretty busy weekend here started in on my R200 swap. After cutting the exhaust, dropping the R180 out, burning out bushings I got the first REALLY good look of the underside of my car. I knew the floors had been replaced but after poking around I did manage to put a screwdriver through the passenger side floor just behind the rear seat bracket . This got me worried so I’m ordering up a needle scalar and scaling the bottom of the car where I suspect problems. The rust area is actually an area that had been repaired by the prior owner and was not sealed/welded well. I'm going to POR-15 it with some of their spot putty and the siler (metal content) POR-15. I was able to salvage one of my spindle pins and put one lower control arm back together PITA if you don't camfer the edges. Tonight pulling strut cartridges/checking em out. I thought this job was going to be a total nightmare but it's not too bad now if I can just get it all back together (waiting on parts) ds -
One additional book you should by is the JTR conversion manual, worth it's weight in gold David

Hey guys lets try to keep E-bay items in the For Sale section. There are now 2 posts in the Chevy V-8 forum that reference that same car. It just makes following the V-8 topics more difficult when clutter such as this is in the forum. I'm not trying to get on anybody's tail here, just think before you post. Thanks, David

Anyone looking for a blown 240z? Real cheap!
dsommer replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
It does have WOW factor though and if the car could be had for $15K it's not too bad considering by the time my car hits the street with the 350 I'll be in for close to $10K doing all the work myself David -

Autometer oil pressure sending unit
dsommer replied to dsommer's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Yep that's what I did, I went to Auto Zone and they fixed me up with the part (last night at O'Reilys they didn't have the part). After a call to Summit (and 4 or 5 Capt. Morgans and cokes) I finally figured out that Summit has order takers only!!! They have ZERO tech experence. I asked the guy if he had ever rebuilt an engine and he said uh a long time ago, the kid sounded like he was 17 or so therefore he rebuilt an engine when he was...7 Whatever Summit, I think I'll start doing business where I count as a person not just a commission for some punk kid. David Yes, I have talked to some professional people there but they are few and far between. -
I am trying to install my Autometer oil pressure sending unit (electrical) on the back of the block but there seems to be a clearance issue. There is no way it will fit. Is there a fitting I need to get to offset it away from the block. Any sugguestion? Intake grinding is an option but I would rather not. David

First time out bought a 280R (R=rust bucket!!!) I shopped around and found a 73 240Z. If you find a car that has rust (major rust) just walk away unless it's a give away price with some really good parts (ie interior/sellable (sp) parts) the savings in time, money and effort are well worth paying a few more dollars for. I lucked out on the 280R. I sold the head (MS) for $100 the header $80, Cartech 4 barrel intake $75 and a few misc. parts to make up for the initial investment. I have left over a brand new windshield (that I need, mine is pitted real bad), an R200 rearend (to replace the R180 in the 240) super nice door panels (that I will use later) and full set of swastika rims with center caps that are on my 240 now. I gave $600 for the 280R and feel that I have made my money back on the deal plus I have a parts car to scavenge parts off of (ones that will fit anyway). So hindsight being 20/20 DON’T BUY A RUSTY CAR!!! Best of luck on your project!!! David

Smokin!!!!!! Would the tech dude rather have you run it on the street? Great times congrats!!! David

Which lengthLokar cable? 24" or 36"?
dsommer replied to QWKDTSN's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Is that 36" overall length or 36" of cable shield? I may have the wrong one I've got one that is way over 36" but has 36" of cable shield and NO mounting bracked (smart guy bought off e-bay) Can the cable be cut to length? Or am I stuck with an unusable part? Where can I buy a bracket for the cable? Thanks, David -
I've got a 50-1402 on my 73Z. It sits kind of low but I think it looks great IMHO. Check it out at the link below. David

Ok, I need some help. I’m in the process of installing the heads on my engine (TFS 23deg) and was wondering how you go about measuring for the push rods. I’ve got a push rod length checker. My questions are: 1. What is ZERO lash? 2. When checking length what position should the rocker arm be in TDC, Intake stroke, compression or power stroke? (I’m guessing TDC) 3. Where should the rocker arm be positioned on the stud? Screwed all the way down (bottomed out?)Or backed off 1 or 2+ turns? 4. Should I be taking the measurements with a feeler gauge in place (at the valve tip) for clearance? (I’m guessing yes here) Thanks in advance for you help, thoughts and advice. Miles, Can you post the MS part numbers that you used for the conversion? Because these parts are non-returnable (per MSA) If folks order them we want to make sure they don't sell 2 different kits. Oh yeah how about some pics!!! David
