  1. I still think it's do-able. I'm not sure the driveshaft idea would work if you run an open diff or to take into account cornering. It would add to the complexity, but I don't see how you would get around having to monitor both LF/LR and RF/RR separately unless you have a 50/50 diff. You might be able to lower the ~10% difference and just account for hysteresis. It would be really cool if a Wolf could be capable of controlling this. Since it can flip between two programs, it would be really easy to turn the traction control on or off with the flip of a switch.
  2. The point is to control the rears from over-spinning, but in order to do that you need to know if they are or not. An easy way to do this is to compare the velocity of the rears versus the fronts. They should be roughly equal if there is no wheelspin. The fronts should never lose traction in acceleration since we're rwd (of course). A good way limit power for a turbo might be to use an electronic boost controller...
  3. I think that it's an excellent idea and you're futher along in your plan than I am. Is the main purpose to control a launch at the strip, or were you thinking of a full-on vehicle dynamics control? I'm still missing the point why you'd want to monitor front wheelspin... [Edit: D'oh! You'd need to know front wheel speed to control the rear speed...excuse my brain fart, lol] I was thinking more along the lines of using a rev limiter to control power versus pulling timing if was for the strip. I like the idea of pulling timing much better!
  4. I agree, that is really well done! Frank, I like the split Euro lights for the front indicators. Any idea where I can find a set? I remember Pallnet sold off his set and I was broke at the time or else they would be on my car now.
  5. Intake manifold or exhaust?? Not to say that I have one available. It seems like you cannot give away an intake, but exhaust mani's are getting more rare to come by it seems...
  6. Justin, if you like Celicas you have to check out this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osQALBaMP14&NR=1 I owned a '78 second gen, it was a cool car for college. It took me from PDX to Chicago and back a few times. It was a fun car, but I wanted a turbo for it so bad climbing the rockies with 2.2l ~96 HP n/a.
  7. Clifton, I feel compelled to say that your '71 is one of the most bada$$ looking S30's I've ever seen!! I really like the flairs, wide tires, banzai paint scheme, and I have to ask if those are 280ZX ducts in the hood...those totally complete the look. And it performs as good as it looks to boot! Damn impressive Man!!
  8. I don't know if I would get sued or not if someone got a heart attack by trying to steal my hoopty-260. What if someone stuck their tounge on your ignition coil in the engine bay while it was running and got a heart attack? Stupidity or getting hurt during attempted grand theft auto shouldn't be a reason to sue if you ask me... I know we're not supposed to get political around here, so I'm going to leave it at that.
  9. Believe me MJ, that thought has crossed my mind many times as well. [Edit: Well I at least have to say something to zeeboost. I'm right there with you Man except I skipped over the girlfried bit and went right to the Z from the start! I already offered to start "HA" Portland chapter but some of us are still searching that river in Africa...lol]
  10. Guys...this might sound creepy, but I've thought of being buried in my 280ZXT. It already has the black diamond tuck interior...just like a casket. How much is the reserve on a double wide plot?
  11. C'mon, you don't see the yellow S30 with the Lotus Elise body kit?!
  12. The distributor and oil pump share the same shaft on L-series engines. It could be that someone installed the oil pump / distributor shaft retarded (literally speaking). The '81 turbo distributor is different than '82-83. What year is your L20ET? Also, it might have been better to start a new thread with a proper title...
  13. That is a most aggresive looking dog! It probably is a wolf, they're making a comeback at least in the west. Last week the first wolf entered Oregon (a female) from the re-introduction into Montana, or Idaho...They're radio tracking her and they say she can move really fast considering the terrain. I see coyotes in suburban Portland once in awhile...they just follow the streams in. Lucky it wasn't a cougar. Those sound wicked at night! I camped at this place called Devil's Flats. All I could hear was "DOOOOOWWW! DOOOOOOWW!" all night long. My dog at the time was a Wolf/Coyote/Elkhound/Rot mix and it seemed she was more scared than me! Our relationship with wild animals is really wierd now. We have programs where we collect road kill over the winter. Then if we have an early spring, we helicopter the roadkill to the mountains so the cougars won't come looking for food in the neighborhoods...no joke. I hope you can get some cool pics!!
  14. Hmm...I haven't tried those. The wall thickness seems decent enough to prevent them from collapsing under vacuum when they get hot (the first problem noticed with cheap silicone). Their ability to withstand high heat cycling (eventually getting hard and cracking) and chemical resistance may still be questionable... [Edit: Okay, well he says that they have good chemical resistance...the price is still kind of high, no??] Personally, I think those bright red hoses detract from the look of the engine bay. I don't notice the engine components much...all I notice are the hoses. But hey, that is just my opinion...
  15. No worries Mate! Glad I could help. I'm sure you'll be back to full boost in no time.
  16. Like the others said, type intelligibly and you'll get a better response. That said, I think your friend is right. Unless the turbo is somehow shot it is probably the wastegate. From what I understand, there are hoses that come off the side of the compressor housing. When you build boost it pressurizes and sends the signal to the wastegate actuator. The actuators are sized so they will open the wastegate at a specific boost level to protect from over-boosting. Assuming you have an internal wastegate, there is a puck inside the housing that is basically a door that keeps the gasses flowing through the turbine wheel until the wastegate opened by the actuator to limit the boost ("wasting" the exhaust gasses instead of turning the turbine wheel). You need a tensile load from the actuator to keep the wastegate door shut. Say that the wastegate hole has an area of 1 in^2. To be able to keep the pressure before the turbine to say 40 psi, you need up to 40 pounds of pulling force to keep the door shut since force=pressure*area. Of course it may be more or less than that from the rod depending on the lever arm of the puck... It sounds like the wastegate isn't in the closed position to start with. If it were me, I would inspect the wastegate rod and check to see if the actuator is not keeping the puck in the closed position. You can remove the cotter pin and pull the rod just above puck pin to see if the puck can be held shut more by moving it's pin closer to the center section. You may need to either clock the bracket so it is in a better position, or else shorten the actuator rod. Good luck and I hope I'm not wrong here...I had the same experience and this is how I solved it.
  17. I'd like to see how he has this set up...it looks and sounds pretty crazy!!
  18. Perhaps this question is more for TurboBlueStreak, but I heard that the CosmosWorks CFD in SolidWorks only handles laminar flow and not turbulent. I wonder if this is this true... [Edit: I hope it didn't sound like I was saying that the analysis is not valid...in fact this is one of my all-time favorite threads and project. Keep posting more!! ]
  19. I know his brother Roger, so I'm sure I could get contact information at our next NW-Z meeting. I'll try to remember...
  20. ^^ PM sent. Let me know what you think...
  21. 800 foot-pounds of torque at ZERO rpm?? Hell yeah!
  22. Actually, these vids are way better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PRkpn2xmjc&feature=related
  23. Have you guys seen Plasmaboy's "White Zombie" yet? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQ6y9G5HRKc I saw him this night @ PIR up against a Z06 when he blew the motor halfway down the track and still finished only ~1/2 sec behind! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKZvN0bh_FI&feature=related I would love to get 50 miles per day if I could do 0-60 in 3 seconds...(didn't want to threadjack Cygnus' e-car post )
  24. Whew! Thanks for posting that John. I was getting worried there...I have Schroth 4 point belts (with the ASM device) installed on Sparco Milano seats. I was beginning to think I'd submarine for sure. I don't know if this is true, but I heard that the reason conventional latches aren't legal is that you need to be able to unlatch them with a single press of a button. Schroth was the only company I knew of that had this. It wasn't hard to see that my Cusco strut tower bar would not work since it would have so much deflection and might even buckle because it isn't very thick tubing (and the way it's bolted). So instead, I'm bolted to the nearest strut bolt using the optional bolt mount instead of a strap mount. I don't think it could shear but I haven't tested it yet. This also minimized the length of belt which is good, but it also made it so there is not much angle drop from horizontal unfortunately, which can also cause submarining I retained the stock seatbelts, they're just tucked out of the way. So if I do get stopped I can always revert back to OEM instead of the po-po saying they'll have to tow my car!
