I am going to have to say, that once you feel the hp and low down torque of a turbocharged car, NA engines feels lethargic and lackluster. I have a good friend who built his L28, big compression, custom pistons, Racer Brown Cam, beautiful headwork etc etc only to yield just over 240whp. The car sounded great and went pretty quickly but he spent an easy $6 or 7 grand and then hit a brick wall. With turbocharged you can get 400hp for the same $$$ and still have an awesome sounding car, simply because of the harmonics of the straight 6 and the L engine. Not to mention an engine that will pick-up a car and make it accelerate with brute force. People who think that turbo technology is the easy or cheap way...think again please, that is a very untrue statement. Most of us on here that have turbo set-ups are NOT "half-assed/dodgey built turbo", but have taken pride in the install and are well built set-ups. Internal combustion engines ARE air pumps, the efficiency of these air pumps are increased significantly by forced induction (turbo or super charging). Turbocharging is simply incredible technology. After what was a perfect evening with dinner with friends, I was coming home at just after midnight. I was driving my 20year old turbocharged Mazda 323 (pretty quick lil sleeper) and had to get onto the on-ramp for the Interstate. There was a brand new black Hummer H3 that I had to squeeze infront of as 2 lanes were merging into 1. I made sure, tried to courteous and not just cut infront of him and gave him lots of room, like I said 2 lanes were merging into 1, so had no choice. I guess Mr. H3 did not like that I was infront of him, and decided to throw on his high beams at me...I was thinking WTF? Now getting onto the Interstate he tried to get ahead of me (and I should have let him thinking about it now!) with his slow as molasses H3 and he tried to box me out, I anticapted his move and my 323 walked past his H3 with ease, then what does he do throw the high beams on me again and ride my bumper literally he was three feet off my bumper. I was thinking this was pathetic. As there was alot of construction on the Interstate the speed limit was only 45mp/h and I was doing easily 55mp/h to distance myself from the DumbVee. Mr. H3 DumbVee stayed on my bumper for easily 5+miles with his high beams on me trying to blind me. With as high as those idiot box SUVs sit, his lights were overpowering, and I decided to say "enough was enough"...and dropped a few gears lets my speed drop down to around 35mp/h and stand on the brakes. He really had to lean that idiot box on its nose to not land it in my back seat, and then I then took off again and he tried to accelerate again to catch me. By this time, we were through, the construction on the Interstate and the lanes opened up from 2 to 4. I decided I had enough of this childish crap and just let my car sit at 55mp/h and hoped that he would just cruise on by me, but instead he caught up with me and did the same thing, sit on my bumper with his high beams on, if I did a lane change to get away from him, he would do the same just sit on top of me. I was getting so P.O'd, I went into the middle of the four lanes, and just stood on the brakes (I made sure no other cars were behind us) and brought the car down to around 20 or 30mp/h and he had no choice but to go around me, otherwise it would have been a rear end collision for sure. I stayed cruising around 40mp/h and let the idiot get enough distance from me and I just toddled home afterwards....but boy I was really boiling hot. I was still hot by the time I got home and I was disappointed in myself that I was braking so heavily on the Interstate with him behind me - creating a potential accident situation, to try and teach him a lesson for following me so closely and driving like an idiot with his high beams on. That is something I would have done 15years ago when I was 20 but not now! It is the first real road rage I have been caught up in as far as I can remember..and made me feel this --><-- small, even though I feel strongly he was the instigator from the get-go. Really if there would have been no construction on the Interstate, I would have opened up my car and just accelerated away from him and I would not have been typing this... The driver of the DumbVee was about my age and had an attractive female passenger (wife, girlfriend?) - if that is of any consequence.... Makes me wonder, how at times we get caught up in stupid situations, and logic, common sense, rationale, whatever just goes right out the window. I am sure we have all been through similar situations! Shaking my head - Yasin

Clif - Good video...boy that is the hardest working 510 in the business!! He certainly kept the revs boiling and that thing looked VERY stiff....the shift light was constantly on too, showing the revs he was running. Bet it was a L18 with Mikunis. Yasin

Sorry I have been meaning to chime in your post for a few days now. Anyhoooo...I love your ZX S130 project, the 16" wheels are dead sexxxy too - they look like Riken or Epsilons. Congrats on breathing new life into her, I am very excited for you - very cool and I am glad to see you are going Turbo power as well. Here is my little missy, who I absolutely adore and hope to see 450+whp this spring summer: Featured in Nissan Sport Magazine, look who wrote the article!!!! Here is a good buddy of mine....: Yasin

J - Courtesy Nissan no longer carries the 2.0mm, they get them directly through Nissan Motorsport and I confirmed this recently. Did not realize TEP has both...that good news! Actually great news. Thanks for that info! Yasin -

I do not have the spec card on the piston it is still at my engine builder. I am using a F54 block not a LD block. I am also using a 1.0mm HKS metal head gasket, the 2.0mm is NLA. My block is not assembled so I am not sure where the piston tops are relative to the deck. When it is assembled I will snap some pics. Great to hear brother J!! Awesome in fact! Doug - Many thanks for that info!! Much appreciated! Please call Greg at 416-665-2220 and ask him about pricing, he is definitely one of the best in North America. Regards - Yasin -

Quite frankly for the price I paid for these pistons, I am not about to start taking chunks out of it to lighten it. These pistons weigh a very "slim" 340g each, so your 10% reduction approx. in weight, yields negligible gains. Thanks for your awesome scientific explanation - that was REALLY technical. Furthermore I am not about to sacrifice strength integrity for a street car...maybe an all out race car I can see. I respect JE to build a piston to my specs, hp goals and longevity. Justin - I did not realize your car is apart? What are you doing besides fitting your new sexxxy turbo manifold? Mario - Many thanks! -
Thats my choice as well. Yasin

Each piston was 340grams each...I am sure if JE wanted to make them lighter they would of. Doesn't it make sense that since you are running a lower compression than myself your dish would be deeper? Just asking....? I am also running a P90 head as per my first post. Yasin -

Well after 5weeks, JE finally got my (custom) forged pistons made. The price was quite a bit higher than I was figuring...oh well - its only money right??!! 500whp here I come! The final displacement on my engine will be 2962cc with these pistons (40thou over) in conjuction with the LD28 crank. The pistons will yield a 8.0:1 based on the cc's done to my extenively worked over P90 head. I am going to run a floating wrist pin and not a pressed pin. The pistons are on their way to be Swain coated hence the masking on them. The F54 block is all prepped and ready to go as well. I should have the entire built engine back in less than 2 weeks so I am very excited, as my car has been off the road and out of commission for about 8-9months now. Here are the pics (more on the way): Regards - Yasin -
You guys are forgetting that is a BRAND NEW crank and Nissan no longer makes these cranks - they have been out of production for a while. If I rememmber correctly, brand new the LD28 crank was around $1300US. Yasin

You only have $4K in yours Phil...holy crap! incl...the damn car...double holy crap. I loved the vid...sahweet. I watched it at 5am, good way to start the day. Yasin

slownrusty replied to olie05's topic in Non Tech Board
So what does it tip the scales at? Nice car, love the "Turbo-look" and interesting engine swap. I am a 911 owner but definitely not a Porsche purist but love the flat six....and had you retained the stock 3.2L and turbocharged it you would be at the same hp level with some cool technology under the hood. My flat 6 just dyno'd a very safe 418hp at 1bar of boost. I am sorry and no offense intended, but carb'd SBChevys do not excite me, even though there is not denying they make great power and the $$ investment is relatively low. Having attended literally hundreds of hot rod shows including making the yearly pilgrimage to Good Guys and Super Chevy, guys spend a fortune on crazy paint, custom wheels, sumptuous interiors and trick suspension but sadly they all run some flavor of a 4barrel SBChevy (or possibly BBChevy)...it gets a bit boring....its amazing that seldom even play or experiment with EFI let alone (turbo) forced induction. What do you guys think of these rims on a Z?
slownrusty replied to FJ 280z's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Tano -Sorry bro not feeling them....too busy for me... a nice polished lip and a simple center design suits the Z perfectly. Yasin -
Gang - I was able to score a low mileage turbo motor, supposedly just over 100K. I picked it up brought it home and tried turning it over by hand and no luck..it feels definately seized, it has not been run in many many years -probably 5 or so, but the oil is topped off in it and is not very dirty. I have not looked further into it, but was wondering could I do some things to see if I could get it to turn over by hand. I had a pretty long breaker bar and socket on the crank bolt and no-go. I guess I could start dis-mantling...to further investigate? Any suggestions that you could please share? Thanks! Yasin
