  1. I'm with Jon on this one. Hows this, there is a 2.3L (4 cylinder) in a 510 around here that is running a custom cast manifold, and dual Z SU's. There is also the exact same buildup running dual 40 DCOE's. I mean exact, same pistons, same cam, same header, same freaking everything. (the young guy was impressed with the other setup, so he copied it to a T - except when it came to carbs) The SU car is very lively, does great at low speed/autocross, gets good economy and rips it up pretty much. A pretty easy car to drive fast. The Dual DCOE 40 car is half-ass tuned, and is comparible in acceleration to the SU car when going flat out. If this engine is tuned properly (which it is in line for at our shop) I have no reservations in saying it will pull on the SU car. Proof? Not really. But more fuel for the fire.
  2. Hmm, maybe I'm a noob, but I think 200rwhp is attainable from a NA L-series without breaking the bank, doing a turbo conversion, or adding NOS... From 1/4mile times I'd say there are a few around me locally, and on this board. Flat top pistons N42/E31 big valve head - or some other combo in excess of 10:1 compression ratio Moderately hot cam Header/2.5" exhaust Triple 40's Electronic ignition Quality ignition system/multispark box Combine it with some decent gearing and you have a FUN car to drive that sounds incredible, and is knocking on the door of 200rwhp. On an aside, according to the calculators (which aren't perfectly accurate) Norm Simpers is making in the area of 270 crank horsepower with dual SU's... He posted a few months back that he had ~$3000 into his entire car. Granted he's often the exception to the rule, but he's shattered the 200rwhp mark. Assuming 15% drivetrain loss he's at 230rwhp.
  3. I'd say the weight difference is a bit bigger of an issue that what baddriver has outlined. This weight is primarily on the front wheels, which will make turning more difficult, as well as LIKELY front-bias the weight distribution of your car. With that said, 45lbs is relatively little in the grand scheme of things and won't make or break the car. However, most attuned drivers would feel the 45lbs additional weight. (At least in a back to back comparison) However it seems to me that the biggest advantage is that aluminum heads can help you make more power.
  4. Stock plugs are NGK BPR6EY-11. The '6' in the center is the heat range of the plug.
  5. What point are we arguing? Simply defending our ideals regarding modifying Z's? I can sum it up in one sentance. We want to. I will volunteer to write the article as well... Though it sounds like Len is really keen on it! My only concern is that we don't come off as arrogant and uptight about modifying our cars, the way SOME purists have about not modifying their cars.
  6. Z man377 - Man good footage in there, I just wish it was better quality. Do you have the opening scene to that video in a higher quality and without music? If so, then please pass it along... as well as any other shots you want to recommend. bastaad525 - Thanks for the offer, can you pass along something in MP3 format? It would be cool to have the hybridz video done to the sounds from a member.
  7. On the flipside I pretty much died in Texas in march. No hot weather for me thanks!
  8. Wow, great responses guys. Honestly I have enough footage now to get going. (and I have) Those guys that have their cars off the road, well we'll get you next time around. I have a feeling there might be a few of these videos made. If you have some big vids (10.3mb might be too large for my email) can you host them and send me the link to D/L? I have a fast connection but my mailserver limits my recieving file size. Rage is a great idea... I will dig through those tunes and see what I can find. I had in mind a godsmack song as an option too but rage may work better. We'll see! Keep the ideas (and cameras) rolling.
  9. Why would we be stuck inside at -42? In my younger days I "trick or treated" at -45, played hockey on an ourdoor rink at -35, froze my ass off skiing at -50 and walked around Regina in -38 wearing shorts!
  10. Hey Myron, good to see you back again!
  11. majik16106, with all due respect don't hijack my thread. If you are going to do a video and sell it fine, no problem. Mine will be a free download... and will be done sooner rather than later. If you have a ton of video then there are 2 options. 1) try to break it up into managable sizes (25mb?) and host it, send me the link and I will download. (as a few people have done allready) or 2) edit the crap out of it and just include good stuff. I don't need shaky shots that make you want to puke, 10 minutes of the car just sitting there, etc. Keep the suggestions coming! I am going to try to make the whole video less than 5 minutes and a manageable size to download. I don't have a camera (which is really unfortuante for this) but I trust I will get enough footage eventually to make a decent vid. As for music... I've got a couple of ideas but am open to suggestions. I want something that fits with a high powered car, something that hasn't been done 100 times allready, (ie: metallica-fuel, anything linkin park, jesus built my hotrod, etc) and something that kicks ass so people will get into it. Majik, if you are interested I can mail you a CD of all the video I accumulate to help you out on your vid.
  12. I want some sounds, but there will be music too so it isn't mandatory... however to get the whole hybridz experience I think sound has to be part of the picture.
  13. I think I've had ~12 in the last 2 days of the returned email error...
  14. Keep going TBS... It's a cool project and I am sure there are many bumps on the road still to come, but kudo's for giving it a shot!
  15. No deadline at all... I'll make it when I have the time and collect stuff until then... there might be a part II video anyway if this one goes well.
  16. Yes! Why the heck don't we have our own video? Well, I'm pondering making up a Hybridz video... Something that shows what our cars can do. Something to represent us and the cars we've built. What I need from you guys is video clips of your hybridz's. It can be anything, burnouts, drag racing, road racing, street racing, cruising, engine shots, interior shots, closeups of wheels, tach shots, speedo shots... I need some of everything. Be creative! It would be best if the video you send me meets the following requirements: - Is no longer than ~30 seconds per clip. - Is compressed to a fairly reasonable file size so that it can be emailed. - Is at least 320x240 resolution, and 15fps. - Is clear, has sound if possible, and isn't shaky. I'll also accept some good action still shots that I might be able to work in. So if you want to immortalize your hybridz, send me some footage! you can email it to me: drax77 at shaw.ca. No limits on how many clips you can send, just try to keep them under ~4mb each or they may be rejected by my mail server. Oh yeah I've done a few videos before with decent results. Any comments on music are appreciated.
  17. I've done a few... I'd save your money and not buy one on ebay, just start from scratch... its really not too tough.
  18. I plan on taking a sheet of aluminum, and cutting it the same profile as the front of the airdam. Rivet it to the bottom of the airdam lip every 1-2", and leave it protrude ~1" as a chin splitter. (this whole sheet would be parallel to the ground surface) I am going to run it back as far as seems suitable, likely to the front crossmember and rivet/dzus fastener it in place there. It may end up being two pieces for me, one riveted front section, and another dzus fastner section from the rad crossmember back, so that it can be easily removeable for maintenance. I think the majority of the distortion from the airdam is fore and aft, and this would certainly make a large difference, as well as getting the benefit from the chin splitter, and the small undertray. Who knows when I'll get a chance to do it though.
  19. You just decided what I am doing with my valve cover and intake... man I love the look of that. I've been waffling on it for weeks, couldn't figure out what to do. Black wrinkle finish powdercoat it is!
  20. Man this sucks... and I know Ross uses multiple anti-theft devices too! It really makes me wonder if I should be more anal about anti-theft stuff in my car, though I think its pretty good the way it is... maybe more is better! Ross I hope you find it soon and in 1 piece... I've passed along the word to the local people...
  21. 220rwhp is a cake walk... well, you will likely need an intercooler though.
