Removing curb rash from rims
het976 replied to ben280zx's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I had 2 rims repaired on my 06 BMW...they are painted, not polished. The guy came to my house and charged me $120.00 to repair both. It took him about an hour and they look like new. One was not too bad, but one was pretty deep and ugly (my girlfriend sideswiped a curb...not good on an 18" wheel with 35 series tires). Overall, better than $1200 for two new wheels. -
Hi I am in East Vancouver. Born and raised in Southern Oregon then 8 years in Colorado I think it would be fun to all meet someplace, sometime. I owned this car for over 20 years, sold it in 1997, found it on eBay 3 months ago as a shell. My son and I are putting it back together...step by step by step. I hope to have the engine and tranny back in next week and drive it this summer.

I agree, there is NOTHING like the sound of a P-51 at full song on a low altitude pass...The ultimate Hybrid...it was not much a plane until they pulled the Allison and dropped in the Merlin, then it became the best fighter ever built. A WWII pilot friend of my dad said, "when you sent a picture home to family, you wanted it in front of the sexy P-51, but if you wanted to make it back to base you flew a P-47 -Radiators and bullets do not mix."

A OR State Patrol friend says, "ANY modification is illegal, including cutting, bending, obscuring or covering - accidental or purposeful. You can and will get pulled over if they see it." You may only get a warning to repair or replace it, but only works the first time if they enter it into the comupter.

For my 2 cents the most beautiful plane of all time is the ME-262. Way ahead of it's time. Here are a couple of shots from the London RAF museum. Also, not military exactly, the X-15 and the X-1 are among my favorites. These are from the Air and Space in DC

Going Old School 215/60SR14 on 14x7 Rims
het976 replied to hawaiiz's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Just FYI...I have a set of 14x7s with 245-50 BFG and they fit with 1/4 spacers in rear and 1/2 in front. I put on longer wheel studs in front. I have fender flares, so not sure about the body to tire fit...but the 245s worked on all 4 wheels with stock, lowered suspension. Not sure of the offset on the wheel...at the time I did them (1977) there were very few affordable wheels wider than 6 inches. The ones I have are Appliance cast wire. The tires are still good, but must be close to 20 years old... -
The Wrecker rocks too. Everyone needs a wrecker as a 2nd car. Why didn't I think of that years ago? It would have saved me and my parents a lot of stress and dollars. It seems like I spent as much time attached to a tow strap as I did driving my 2000 roadster when I was in high school (so bad I carried the tow strap in the trunk and when I called my mom, she would often answer with..."OK where are you"...) That is a really rare and cool combination of vehicles.

With Black Bears they say be as big as you can be and make noise. If attacked, play dead and cover up. They may get boared and leave.

For obvious reasons, I think your car rocks.

Removing curb rash from rims
het976 replied to ben280zx's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Check with a new car dealer. My BMW dealer has a guy the comes out 2 times a month and does repairs to both painted and polished. I sense he does a route thru the local dealers. I had one done and it cost $35.00 and looked great. -
They guy I get my powercoat supplies from says there is an "IR heat gun" that will do the job pretty well. I have not looked for one. I am also running into issues with my home oven size. I took the crossmember sway bar and springs in and it was $120.00 to get them back. The idea of adding a box on the the open door sounds good. That would at least let me clear my valve cover. Did you use a structure for the box or just build it out of the foil board?

1 QUICK Z to Run in the " KING of THE STRIP''
het976 replied to 1 QUICK Z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Maybe we could do a fund and Hybridz could sponsor. Can someone set that up? I will be willing to kick in some $$$$$$$$$$ to do that. -
If you are worried about he frame rails, baddog makes some nice replacments that slip over the existing rails.
-
I was told you should put the transmission crossmember in to hold the tunnel shape if you cut out the pans. We also ran a brace from the tunnel to the door sill to hold it all together.
-
That looks very cool. Not another one like it. We need some details...like how did you do the front end. True craftmanship and attention to detail. The engine compartment is so clean...no wires. WOW
-
I need a tranmission crossmember...sent you a PM

Well he was trying to get top dollar. I gave him $1200 for the adapters, wheels and new tires...
-
No, not right now. I am way too far away from making the decision...LOL we are just dynamatting the shell this week...I am thinking I will stay with them for now, but want to make sure they are not going to fail. The guy I got the car back from told me he paid like $800.00 for them...not sure if that is true. I have not found them on the internet, so I can't verify that. They are pretty nice.

Just to follow up on my commitment, here are some pictures of the wheel adapters that came with my car, to adapt to 5 lug. They seem really robust, but I welcome more experianced thoughts. I am still trying to find out where they came from.

The most amazing car mods you will ever feast your eyes on

That was the most bizarre car thing I have ever seen. -
I agree...Charlie at Zedd Findings has a great product. Fit and finish was great. Quality is excellent. I only used 2/3 of the pan and the new frame rail.

Aerodyn wind tunnel results!!!
het976 replied to bjhines's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
What would happen if you vented the air under the hood into the cowl area by drilling some holes through the firewall into the box that hold the wiper motor? When I talked to my stepdad yesterday, he reminded me that is what he did to keep as much air from going under the car. He remembered drilling 4 - 3" holes. He also blocked off all the other holes in the core support so only the radiator passed air. -
They just bolt to to exhisting hub like a wheel using lug nuts. The key is they are really wide, so a stock body could not use them, but if you NEED the width then they are prefect. They are two piece, with a 2 inch plate that bolts to the hub using lug nuts, then a 1" adapter that attaches to the plate with 7 12mm grade 8 allen screws. They seem really stout. I am out the door on a business trip to Houton this am, I will post some pictures of the adapters on Friday when I get back and ask the guy I got the car from where he got them.
