  1. Speaking from first-hand experience with a '98 LS1 out of a Camara Z28. 1) You will probably have to reflash the PSM anyway becasue you'll probably only run two 02 sensors vs the stock 4 - unless you plan on running catalytic converters. 2) The 98 LS1 was rated at 305 flywheel HP on the Z28. Mine has a K&N intake, the ECM reflashed to '02 parameters, and headers. It was dyno'd when I had the restrictive single 2 1/2" exhaust and the headers have restrictive 1 1/2" primaries. The car dyno'd at 311 rwhp. Assuming 20% drivetrain loss (used magazine articles on Corvette flywheel vs dyno results) the car is making around 390HP at the flywheel. The fact that it ran a 12.9@110 with a 2.0 second 60' on street tires weighing in at 3,100 lbs with me on board somewhat substantiates those numbers.
  2. If I remember right the 240 has a smaller transmission hump than my 280. FWIW - my e-brake mechanism actually had to be bent very slightly to clear the T56 and not rub on it.
  3. A little history for everyone. The JCI kit was made using my car as a prototype so it incorporates features that I felt were important for my car. 1) The T56 shifter comes up inside the original shifter hole in the 280Z. It is about 1/2" forward of the stock Datsun T5 location. This is because of, 2) There is enough room between the engine and the firewall to access the vacuum ports on the back of the LS1 and also route the water lines for the heater and the refrigerant lines for the AC through their stock locations. 3) Height is determined by what is required for the engine to clear the stock front cross-member in that specific fore-aft position. 4) The driver side motor mount has a hole in it for the steerig shaft because I required that the steering mechanism not be messed with. 5) The engine is offset to the passsenger side slightly to maintain the original weight bias of the L28, R200 alignment, and to aid in header clearance on the drivers side.
  4. Before you do anything make sure that: 1) It's not really the transmission that's whining, and 2) Drive the car and make a few tight turns. If the whining goes away during the turn but is present when driving straight it is rear axle bearings.
  5. Naw - that's Larry's way of making sure his neice doesn't wreck the car!!
  6. What - you just love embarrassing your neice?!?
  7. Interesting read Grumpy. Makes me feel better about my set-up all the time. With the 3.70:1 LSD and 25-26" diameter tires (225/50-16 or 215/55-16) the 4th gear in my T56 has me right at 6,000 RPM at 120 MPH. A good set of DR's would probably have me running very close to that instead of the current 110 on the street tires.
  8. TimZ - It didn't click with me before that the ignition would be firing two coils simultaneously each rotation like it does when using a single coil to fire two plugs, one essentially at TDC and the other at BDC, each rotation. One more advantage of the coil on plug set-up would be that you'd only lose one plug if a coil fails! I'd sure be looking at a way to eliminate the waste spark function and let those coils fire only once each 720°.
  9. FWIW - My LS1 is using the original stock 280Z supply and return lines - just with a higher pressure pump, 60 psi vs 35. It dyno'd 311 at the rear wheels which maths to about 390 at the flywheel. The only time I've had fuel starvation problems was in hard corners on the track and less the 1/4 tank of fuel - which wasn't a fuel line size problem.
  10. Been contemplating that a couple years now but by this March I'm going to be firmly settled in Washington State which is just a bit too far of a drive. Maybe we should start a NWZ shootout?
  11. Well - actually - since the engine is a 4-cycle - they fire once every 720° of rotation. 6 coils will fire half as often as 3 coils asuming thy're set up the same way which allows the coil more recovery time and the shorter coil-to-plug wire results in reduced EMI and reduced power losses through the wire. We're dealing in very small differences here but perhaps the big question is - If there isn't a significant advantage to it why would GM do it? Look at the performance of the LSX motors vs the earlier generation engines - in stock form - and it is pretty apparent.
  12. Yeah - and don't forget about simple things like being sure the wheels are chocked, that it's up on jackstands or ramps instead of a jack, that the engine & exhaust have had time to cool down, etc., etc. Look at the car every time you approach it with the question: "How is Murphy going to try to get me this time?"
  13. Ditto on the Congratulations. Kids are an awesome responsibility but will be the most rewarding part of your life - even more than the Z! I have two boys - the older one drives a Firebird but talks continuously about the day when he can start building a V8 Z and the younger one drives an '83ZX. When they got old enough to not need a baby seat I used to take them both with me in the Z. The older one belted into the passenger seat and the younger one sitting on the deck behind him with his feet down in the well behind the passenger seat. Not sure about the legal technicalities but they sure did enjoy it.
  14. Absolutely! Every day in the saddle of the beast will be a joy. I've been daily driving mine for over three years now and the smile is still there!
  15. You might also look at the setup used on the GM 3.8L V-6.
  16. Cyrus, there is an outfit that makes kits for polishing glass and for polishng plastic headlights. I got their glass kit to fix some scratches in my wifes Z32 but have not yet had a chance to do it. When I get home tonight I'll check out the box and give you the details. Basically it's extremely fine wet/dry sandpaper disks used with an electric drill and lots of water.
  17. You're welcome. Get me while you can. In two weeks I'm history:burnout:
  18. Lason, My car is sitting on Nissan European Specification springs and KYB struts - not coilovers. It also is running 215/55-16" tires. From the ground to the bottom of the rocker panels is 7 1/4" behind the front wheel opening and 7 1/4" in front of the rear wheel opening. I'm using the JCI LSX motor mounts and a '98 Camaro LS1 and, if I remember correctly, it sits nearly 5 1/2" off the ground. Hope this helps.
  19. Geez guys - thanks for the fairwells. I really appreciate it. I've been hunting for about 8 months now and it's been a pretty difficult search because of my specific background and the tremendous amount of experience I have in that area. I received three offers - one in Pennsylvania, one in Wisconsin, and one in Washington state. The third one finally came in tonight and it now looks like the ol' resignation will be getting submitted late this Friday with two weeks notice. The best offer turned out to be in Yakima, Washington. Not a place that some people would like but it is very similar in many ways to where I grew up in Boise, Idaho. Very dry, with very warm summers but it generally drops to the 60's at night even when 95° during the day and not too frigid winters, The job is good with good pay, a bonus program, and an outstanding relocation package. The cost of living in Yakima seems to be the same or possibly slightly less than here in the DFW area so the pay increase will be a real one - other than the fact that I'll once again have a mortgage which is a bummer. I'd paid off the house here in Arlington about a year ago. Mike KZ - It will be interesting to see if they try. I've been with my current company 23 years and have been istrumental in its solid growth over that time - We're about 10 times larger than we were in 1983. About 7-8 years ago they put a real MBI (Management By Intimindation) type in as my boss - partly because he has a serious lip lock on the owners behind and partly because he knows where too many of the skeletons are buried. I complained about harassment and asked to be moved 10 months ago and was basically ignored and told that I "needed to do what I needed to do" so I think I know what reaction to expect - even though I am going to work for a company that is a major competitor. I expect to get marched out the door within 30 minutes of them finding out who. As long as they pay me through the end of my notice I won't mind the extra two weks of vacation.
  20. If you go through my photo album here on this site you'll see some passenger side photos of my '98 Camaro LS1 that shows the dipstick on the pasenger side.
  21. Well, it's pretty much official. I'm accepting a new position with another company that will have me moving out of the great state of Texas. I will know tomorrow exactly which offer I'll be accepting of the three I've received - ain't it great to have choices?!? Heavily mixed emotions as I'm so very happy about certain aspect that I'll be leaving behind but sad at knowing that my wife an I will be separating from our kids, and grand kids, for the first time in 31 years. Current employer may march me out the door the instant I turn in my resignation as the lead contender at this point is a competitor. We'll see how it all plays out. Needless to say I'm going to be very busy for the next couple months cleaning up loose ends here, selling the house, and getting settled in the new area. Speaking of the house - anyone in the DFW area interested in a really nice home in Arlington? I can tell you that you'd be paying less for it than I have in it in original purchase price and upgrades - by about $60,000!
  22. Phantom

    fuel lines

The larger line is the pick-up line and the smaller is the return from the pressure regulator on the FI engines.
  23. It's my wife that does the dove hunting! Ever tried to hit anything on the fly with a BB gun with a crooked barrel? I suppose I could have her switch to the .22 target rifle with shot but then they wouldn't stand a chance at all - and my neighbors might object a bit!
  24. I've got one - with a car attached - make me an offer!
