  1. Good one. Well, isn't marrying well a form of "self made"?
  2. OK now this article seems to imply that Pinatubo supports the nuclear winter theory: http://climate.envsci.rutgers.edu/pdf/StateOfThePlanet5.pdf Although it does not give any numbers on a nuclear exchange vs. Pinatubo. And more interesting yet, this article http://www.aip.org/history/climate/aerosol.htm seems to imply the onset of global warming was actually masked for years by pollution. Says modern pollution control measures might be causing a noticable increase in the global temperatures: So by removing my smog equipment, am I actually doing something positive to prevent global warming?
  3. I wasn’t aware that the volcano exceeded the nuclear winter estimates for debris. Learned something new. I was talking more about the cooling effect caused by the dust in the atmosphere. So I guess we can say that we need to build up global warming to offset the possibility of global cooling caused by a massive series of volcanic eruptions or a meteor strike? Also 20 megaton explosions are small when compared to the potential yield of a nuclear exchange at the height of the cold war. 20 megatons is something like 2 MX missiles. The Russians had single warheads that yielded 100 megatons.
  4. I have not looked at John's link at Kyoto, but PBS did an excellent show on global warming. If you look at the numbers involved Kyoto was going to accomplish nothing in reducing CO2 levels. The reductions agreed to in Kyoto were absolutely insignificant in comparison to the amount of CO2 being dumped into the atmosphere, let alone the rate at which it is increasing. The people backing Kyoto were doing so from the viewpoint that doing something was better than doing nothing. This was simply a means for the Al Gores of the world to say “look what I am doingâ€. But the PBS special had some very real numbers concerning the economic impact. The fact is there is not much we can do to reduce CO2 levels. Also I thought the big impact of Mt Pinatubo was the high levels of dust thrown into the upper atmosphere, not aerosols. Dust in the upper atmosphere would shield/reflect radiant energy causing a lowering of the earth's temperatures. Isn't this what you are saying? Thus doesn’t it tend to support the nuclear winter theory (or end of the dinosaurs theory, whichever way you want to look at it)? As for the heat sink issue, there is such a thing as black body radiation. The earth is not a heat sink that only absorbs energy. It can also re-radiate a significant amount. That brings up another issue I have had. If we created global warming, then why can’t we actively manipulate our environment to counter it? Why can’t we study methods of adjusting the upper atmosphere to counter the effects of excess CO2? Say ozone generators or a Mt Pinatubo type dust generator? Why are our only options to give up living an industrialized life or to drown all of Huston? I think some people are just determined to think the worst of mankind. Truth is much more study needs to be done to even understand the issue let alone examine reasonable options.
  5. Man, that is some funny stuff. Need to warn people about the porno though. Soem pretty hardcore stuff.
  6. Buying a car like that would scare me. Having spent 6 years in the Navy I can also tell you the services get their share of less than honorable people. I would have to look that thing over top to bottom first.
  7. Actually Viagra was originally developed to treat heart disease. It was only through the clinical trials as a heart medication that the other beneficial side effects were noted. So yes, some current medical research is still based on altruistic motives. It also points out how it is sometimes hard to assign motives. I think most liberals don't see why we can't have healthy trees and a viable economy. At least that is what I gather from observing their curious habits. Most of them, the ones with jobs anyway, aren't really against corporations or personal wealth. They are just very critical of the greed motive and don’t view the “bottom line†in the same pseudo religious sense as most business school weenies. Just a question of where you draw the line and how much is enough. And just like two parallel lines meet at infinity, political science courses make a pretty good argument that the “left†and the “right†also meet at the extreme. In communist Russia the “liberal left†were the individuals for market reform and personal wealth while the “conservative right†wanted more state control. As far as everybody only looking out for their own special motives, I use to take a “think globally†look at government. But as a middle class white male who pays his own bills I have finally come to the conclusion that if I don't look out for my interests it seems like no one else will. Not to belittle what ever hardships other groups have had to endure, but I no longer feel guilty about asking for a break now and then.
  8. http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ Give the guy a call or email. He is most helpful.
  9. What did I tell you? Now they are offering the Iranians nuclear fuel. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6230380/ It is nice when you can afford to buy your way out of a confrontation.
  10. Something tells me old Dubya is not much of a poker player. I could read the cards on his face like he was wearing mirrored glasses.
  11. Still don't know what it means to "win" a debate. One thing I know for sure. From the looks of things, Bush would have been more at ease using his chair to drive home his point against Kerry. If they had let Bush "debate" in his own way, the “debate†would have been over in short order. Actually both guys seemed extremely well prepared. But in all honesty, after a while I started muting Kerry's responses. Part of it was his being at odds with my political beliefs, but for the most part I found his lack of sincerity extremely exasperating. Like the one guy said, I wish I had a nickel for every time he said "I have a plan".
  12. His first line in the post says he just got the lights hooked up. So maybe no work tools because he is still just building it.
  13. Things get even darker for poor John Kerry: http://www.footballfansfortruth.us/index.php
  14. If your hoses are collapsing when it cools, then something is blocking the overflow vent keeping it from allowing air and/or coolant back in. I think you may have mentioned getting a new radiator cap, but also make sure the tube to the overflow is not blocked.
  15. As an alumni of the University of Nebraska I take great offense at this whole affair. Why not Texas orange as the color of wrong?
  16. My neighbor washed the floor mats of his truck with a pressure washer. When he was done it wouldn't run. All kinds of odd symptoms. I finally convinced him to take compressed air and disconnect and dry each and every connection under his dash. After a couple of hours of this it all worked. So I guess I wouldn't try too hard diagnosing symptoms. Start simple and make sure everything is clean, dry and tightly connected. I would literally disconnect each and every plug and blow it out with compressed air.
  17. I guess 29. Looks like they are numbering the parking stalls. The back aisle only has one row, (hence 2-3-4-5), the middle has 2 rows (now 6 numbers) and the front aisle only has 1 row again.
  18. I bought my first motorcycle when I was 26. Thought all the same things as you (although in my case it was my mom). But I was older, had a healthy respect for the bike, would be careful yada yada yada. Spent the first two weeks working on the bike. With all the trips to the parts places began to notice all the guys with limps, neck braces, scars (kid you not). Got the bike running and totaled it a week later. I wasn't too banged up (I managed to tuck into a somersault in mid air so when I hit I rolled mored than flopped). Figured it was someone's way of telling me something. Lots of people enjoy bikes. But if you ask people who have been riding them for years, I think they will tell you accidents are a question of "when" and not "if". Just something to think about.
  19. No issues with the larger MC. I actually liked it better because I think my stock MC had some issues where it would seem to run out of brakes at times. Shortly after putting in the larger MC I went to stainless steel brake lines. The pedal feels like I am stepping on a brick. It hauls the car down with normal pedal effort. One bit of advice, not sure of the years but on mine the ZX MC was plumbed backwards compared to the 240 MC. Just make sure you route the brake line from the front brakes to the end of the MC with the larger reserviour. Also had to adjust the rod length inside the brake booster to get the brakes to engage in the top half of pedal motion rather than the last inch.
  20. What does that mean, "won"? My buddy at work was incensed with Kerry's comment about being able to separate the warrior from the war. He felt it was at odds with all of Kerry's post Vietnam war criminal speeches.
  21. It is still early in the battle. Wait and see how things hold up on appeal. Sometimes it is easy to shop for the right judge.
  22. The above advice is all good and should be looked into. But the absolute FIRST place to look on an "old 240" is the U joint at the end of the steering shaft where it connects to the rack. A common wear item. Mine had a good half inch of play in the steering wheel. Replacing all the rubber mounts and the steering coupler will just make the U joint more obvious. Not sure how much trouble you will have finding a new one. I replaced mine probably 12 years ago and Nissan had stopped stocking new ones back then. Got a good used one from MSA.
  23. Note the dots after my statement. Matter of what you believe. But to answer the question Because they make more money selling oil then they do burning it. Nuclear energy is a very cost effective alternative (for everyone but the US). As far as I know, Iran doesn't have any coal so when the oil runs out they are out of power. Nuke plants can produce phenomenal amounts of power for 30 or 40 years. If you want to join the leagues of industrialized nations you need a stable power source. Some countries think nuclear energy is a great investment right now. Japan is buying up the world's supply of plutonium. They are convinced it is under priced due to low demand, but that the price will eventual skyrocket. The list of nations building nuke plants continues to grow http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/reactors.htm It is perfectly understandable that Iran would want nuclear for energy purposes. Of course I have no way of knowing what ulterior motives they may have. But rather than go to war, give them access to nuclear energy in way it can be monitored.
